This paper analyzes four adaptations for young readers of the metaphors contained in Rosaura’s initial speech in Calderón’s La vida es sueño: the two adaptations made by Ricardo Gómez for the SM publishing house, which follow the versified model of the original although transforming the Calderonian heptasyllables and hendecasyllables into free verse; the one made by Stephanie Burckhard for the Guatemalan publishing house Cazam Ah in e-book format, prosified, which is explicitly defined as «adaptation to modern Spanish»; and the one carried out by the IES Don Bosco, not published in any editorial, with free circulation on the Internet and prototype of certain more personal adaptations to the classroom, in which footnote explanations prevail. Taking into account the needs of the potential readers of these works, the paper weighs the pros and cons of the decisions made by the adapters in the treatment of the Calderonian metaphor and offers a new adaptation proposal that seeks to overcome the remaining pitfalls
Metaverse, Religions and Metahumans: A Window to a Hypercontrolled Post-pandemic World
The creation of a Metaverses as an alternative to everyday reality heralds the first practical expression of transhumanism. The Metaverse is not, as is generally understood, an alternative reality similar to the virtual world of “Second Life”, but rather a pretended “extension” of our daily life. The Metaverse heralds the ubiquitous presentation of an augmented reality that will be essential for work and private life. In this paper we will analyse the possibilities this new technology offers for both the improvement of our well-being and also greater social control and the manipulation of our feelings and desires with particular focus on the possible impact on individual identity, privacy and political consciousness
Spaces of Performance: Shakespeare’s Playhouse Inside Out
It is a truism that plays were written for the space in which they were to be performed: and that therefore to understand Shakespeare, one should understand his playhouses. But though much important work has been done on the physical aspects of Shakespeare’s playing spaces —how big they were, how many people they held, how their sightlines and acoustics worked— much less has been written about the way they were interpreted. This article sets out to explain how discrete bits of Shakespeare’s indoor and outdoor theatres were understood metaphorically. It argues that the interpretation of the physical structure for which a play was written was as important to audience as the structure itself. Considering five different aspects of the theatre space, I ‘On’; II ‘Along’; III ‘Above and below’; IV ‘Around’; and V ‘Outside’, the article posits that the spacial division of the theatre was as interpretatively important as the five acts in a play. Its conclusions about English performance space raises questions about Spanish golden age theatre too. How were the five geographical ‘acts’ of Spanish performance, on, along, above and below, around and outside, defined literally and metatheatrically? How do they complicate, refine or rethink the story told here
The Issue of Social Control in Late Modernity: Alienation and Narrativity
This article shows to what extent the new situation in our late-modern societies can see a further deepening of the social control typical of soft totalitarianism we experience in our globalised democracies, through the mechanisms already denounced by Arendt in her The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951): the promotion of rootlessness and superfluity. In particular, the paper focus on what Eliot (1927) called the hollow man or what philosophy and sociology have called the one-dimensional man, the absent subject or the saturated self, which the technological, social, cultural and economic environment in which we live so favours. The article diagnoses the reasons and means by which the alienation of the subject occurs, but proposes narrative and testimony as ways of combating social control of a psychopolitical kind
Preparation of multifunctional hydrophobic- an hydro-oleophobic coatings with self-cleaning capacities for stone construction materials
This work presents the development, application and characterisation of multifunctional coatings that act as a barrier to water
access to the interior of building materials while at the same time having self-cleaning and atmospheric pollutant degradation
capabilities. To this end, two carrier media, a 3D superhydrophobic agent (SPHB) and a 3D hydrooleophobic agent (OHB), have
been used to reduce the access of water and oily liquids. Two nanoparticulated photocatalysts (TiO2-ZnO 25/75 and Bi2O3-ZnO
8/92 heterostructures) have been incorporated in them, whose mission is to degrade by photocatalysis both dirt accumulated on
the construction material and to degrade surrounding atmospheric pollutants. These photocatalysts have been chosen because
of their improved sensitivity to the visible light spectrum. To avoid the known tendency of nanoparticles to agglomerate, which
would result in lower photocatalytic activity, dispersing agents, non-ionic surfactants (Tween20, TritonX100 and Brij35), were
used in the preparation of the coatings. These suspensions were applied as coatings on stone materials commonly used in Built
Heritage, such as sandstone, limestone and granite. The effectiveness of the coatings was evaluated by studying their
hydrophobicity, oleophobicity and photocatalytic activity. The coatings showed high compatibility with the stone substrates. The
presence of dispersant increased the hydrophobicity of the coatings. The TiO2-ZnO photocatalyst was more active in the SPHB
medium than the Bi2O3-ZnO composition, while the trend was reversed in the OHB medium tests (average abatements between
8 and 10% of nitric oxide and high selectivity). After accelerated weathering tests, it was found that the thickness of the coatings
did not change significantly, showing hydrophobic efficiency and self-cleaning capacity
Empirical evaluation of EnergyPlus infiltration model for a case study in a high-rise residential building
The European Council has proposed reducing buildings’ energy consumption as one way to decarbonization by
2050. Currently, digital twins are used for real-time energy management, but there are discrepancies between
predicted and measured energy performance due to uncertainties in building energy models (BEMs). Air leakage
is a key parameter that is difficult to obtain and EnergyPlus users often employ a constant value or apply
air leakage equations with pre-determined coefficients. This research is a preliminary step in reducing this
uncertainty in the author’s methodology of BEMs calibration, using EnergyPlus and measured data. The study
empirically verifies the ability of the EnergyPlus model’s design flow rate to accurately replicate dynamic
infiltration values within a zone of a high-rise residential building, where a tracer gas test using CO2 and a
blower door test were conducted. Three new methods for calculating Idesign were developed and evaluated. The
results were assessed based on the American Society for Testing Material D5157 (Standard Guide for Statistical
Evaluation of Indoor Air Quality Models). The models generated with ad-hoc coefficients were compared to those
from the literature (EnergyPlus, DOE-2, and BLAST). Among the models with off-the-shelf coefficients, the one
with Idesign calculated with in situ data and DOE-2 coefficients demonstrates an accuracy that is only 26% lower
than the best model with regression coefficients, which has an R2 value of 0.94 and an NMSE value of 0.02 in
the training period
Extraterrestrial Soteriology
One scientific objection to religion is that the discovery of extraterrestrial life would show that our religions are not veridical, with Christianity being the most common target. I will first look at a parallel issue, the ancient and medieval controversy over antipodes. This raises two problematic Christian doctrines that would apply equally to extraterrestrials: the transmission of original sin and the cosmic fall. These issues raise questions about their spiritual status, but I conclude that not having such answers does not amount to an objection to Christianity’s credibility
This article aims to analyze the image that life is like a dream through a parallel study between Life is a dream by Calderón de la Barca and Handan’s dream by Tang Xianzu. We will first explore the historical and cultural background of both works; then we will focus on the texts and on the story to contemplate the personal development of Sigismund and Lu Sheng. The change in their attitude towards life in the face of the dream-reality dilemma reflects the perception of the world of each author, which is the result of his own philosophical and religious background; finally, from the different life choices of the two protagonists, we observe the essential differences between Christianity and Taoism, as well as their common understanding of the true value of life and freedom, which crystallize as a fundamental unit of the spiritual history of humanity
