Optimization of Air Lime Concrete and Air Lime-based Ternary Mixtures with Sustainable Additives for Enhanced Performance in Heritage Buildings

    No full text
The urgent need for sustainable, carbon-negative construction materials has been intensified due to global warming (Barbhuiya, 2023; Haik, 2020). Historic buildings face unique challenges in integrating eco-friendly parameters due to the necessity of compatibility of new materials with historic structures and mitigating their long-term impacts (ICOMOS, 2003). The replacement of OPC with lime in concretes and mortars enables lower carbon emissions and compatibility with historic buildings, although it exhibits higher porosity, water absorption and lower compressive strength than OPC (González-Sánchez, 2021; Rosell, 2023; Velosa, 2009). In this case, admixtures are used to improve the performance of lime-based mixes (Grist, 2013; Seabra, 2009). The study focuses on optimising lime concrete and air lime-based ternary mixes by incorporating eco-friendly additives, as different pozzolanic agents and fibres, to enhance their physical and mechanical properties to be used in restoration works. Silica fume, which is a by-product, and natural volcanic ash were selected as pozzolanic agents and added in different percentages between 0–30%. Hemp and basaltic fibres were included in 1%. The study evaluated the effects of different binders and additives through analyses such as fluidity, water retention, and setting time, also compressive strength tests (7th-28th days). The fresh state analyses revealed that adding silica fume reduced the slump values of the mortars by 13%, whereas volcanic ash and fibres had no significant impact on these values. It was also observed that mixtures containing volcanic ash exhibited lower water retention than those with silica fume. Additionally, the inclusion of basalt fibres reduced water retention in the lime-based ternary mortar by up to 4% compared to those containing hemp fibres. According to mechanical tests, cement and silica fume contributed to the compressive strength values of lime-based mixtures. However, volcanic ash and fibres negatively affected compressive strength values in the early stage. As a conclusion, using silica fume and cement in lime-based mixtures reduces the workability of mortars, contrary to volcanic ash and fibres, while increasing mechanical properties even in the early stages

Never discard enucleation as a possibility: successful enucleation of a neuroendocrine tumor in the pancreatic neck in long and close proximity to the main pancreatic duct

Parenchyma-sparing surgery includes enucleation. Enucleation is not used very often, partly because of its technical complexity, and is usually reserved for anatomically favorable cases (> 3 mm from the duct of Wirsung) with benign etiology. We present a case demonstrating that it is always worth exploring the possibility of performing a more con- servative surgery even in difficult anatomic locations

Bridging Ideological Divides: Why Christians Still Disagree About Evolution and What We Should Do About It

    No full text
Why do creationists persist in rejecting the evidence for Darwin’s theory of evolution? This paper explores longstanding disagreements among Christians over the epistemic status of evolution. Like other studies that have tried to define the evidence for evolution, a recent analysis by Gijsbert van den Brink, Jeroen de Ridder, and René van Woudenberg does not adequately face up to antecedent commitments that play into any assessment of evolution. The scientific theory of evolution involves higher-level models that are associated with a range of non-scientific factors, including theological judgments. In light of these realities, an emphasis on mutual dialogue and understanding offers promising opportunities for Christians trying to discover the truth about God’s creation

Three Chlorella vulgaris biomasses, smooth Chlorella, honey Chlorella and white Chlorella were used at a percentage of 3 % in vegetable purees (10 % zucchini and 10 % carrots), enriched in protein (22 % lentil protein concentrate) and 0.8 % of xanthan gum. Their nutritional, in vitro digestibility, physicochemical, rheological and 3D-printability properties were determined. Sample with white Chlorella showed significantly higher antioxidant capacity than the control, with FRAP value of 100.62 and DPPH of 20.72 μmol Trolox/100 g puree. Purees containing C. vulgaris can be claimed to be a source of iron since they provide >15 % of the Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) for this essential mineral (2.39–2.36 mg/100 g). Total digestibility was high (90.9–92.6 %) for all the samples whereas the highest protein digestibility values were observed for purees with smooth Chlorella (46 %). Smooth Chlorella showed very noticeable color differences compared to control (ΔE values >20). All the purees showed a shear thinning behavior and a weak gel structure (tan δ 0.206–0.212), which made them suitable for dysphagia diet and also for being successfully printed in 3D

Introduction Free-living amoebae are an extensive group of protistans that can be found in a wide variety of environments. Among them, the Acanthamoeba genus and Naegleria fowleri stand out as two of the most pathogenic amoebae and with a higher number of reported cases. N. fowleri is mainly found in warm freshwater water bodies whereas amoebae of the Acanthamoeba genus are broadly distributed through natural and anthropogenic environments. In this regard, the management and the control of the amoebic populations in swimming pools has become a major public health challenge for institutions. Methods The aim of this work was to evaluate the growth pattern of trophozoites of A. griffini and N. fowleri at different temperatures and salt concentrations. Results and discussion Our results showed that A. griffini resisted a higher concentration of salt than N. fowleri. Moreover, no trophozoites could withstand the salt levels of the sea in in vitro conditions. This work supports the contention that salinity could represent an important and useful tool for the control of the most pathogenic amoebic populations in recreational water bodies

Estimating marketing's power via Improved meta-analysis: A deep dive into advertising effectiveness

    No full text
Marketing effectiveness is at the heart of all business success. Firms spend more on advertising than almost any other marketing activity. Research findings and insights regarding marketing effectiveness, including advertising effectiveness, are varied and conflicting. Meta-analysis has become an increasingly popular and indispensable tool in marketing research aimed at discerning robust generalizations across studies in heavily researched topics. However, current meta-analytic methods recommended by and utilized in marketing lag behind those of other fields, leading to inaccurate effect estimates and incorrect inferences related to heterogeneity in effect: What meta-analytic methods are currently utilized in marketing? What methods should be used? What is the effect of superior meta-analytic methods on important topics related to marketing effectiveness such as advertising? What are typical advertising effect estimates and the relevant heterogeneity for both brand (primary demand) and category (secondary demand) advertising elasticities? What findings are suggested by prior meta-analytic and non-meta-analytic research in marketing effectiveness instruments and indicators—such as elasticities—and how can these indicators be used by practitioners? In this dissertation, I focus on understanding, distilling, and expanding collective knowledge in the area of marketing effectiveness through research on marketing effectiveness instruments and indicators as well as understanding and improving marketing meta-analytic estimation, in both cases predominantly concentrating on advertising as an outset. In the inaugural chapter, I meticulously dissect and outline the prevalent meta-analytic biases researchers should be cognizant of, compare recent historical meta-analytic methods and their application in marketing, and provide a comprehensive guide to robustly conducting meta-analyses in the field. In this research I (a) show that current meta-analytic methods in marketing are lagging behind other fields and that marketing still primarily relies on inferior methods and (b) provide a framework for future meta-analyses in marketing to follow. In the second chapter I pivot to a pragmatic application of the advocated methods detailed in the first chapter, concentrating on brand advertising effectiveness. This involves a thorough meta-analysis and review of antecedent studies, identifying significant reductions in effect due primarily to previously unaccounted for publication-selection bias. Through this research I find and correct for significant misspecification, aggregation, publication, and selection biases present in the advertising effectiveness literature and provide important updates regarding the size of brand advertising elasticities, resulting in estimates that are approximately 5-6 times smaller than those indicated by prior meta-analytic studies. In the third chapter, I carry out a more comprehensive advertising effectiveness meta-analysis by amalgamating brand and category elasticities in a more expansive, broader database. Through this research, I provide the first generalizable estimates of category advertising elasticities; show the usefulness of pooling primary and secondary advertising elasticities to expand heterogeneity analyses and allow for increased sophistication in terms of the number model conditions that can be incorporated; and estimate condition-specific effects for various brand and category advertising scenarios. Through supplementary chapters 4 through 5, I fortify the foundation by discussing price, advertising, and related elasticities as well as their uses and implications for practice from both a meta-analytic viewpoint and a general perspective. Taken together, the findings of my dissertation advance our understanding of marketing effectiveness and provide a path for improving meta-analytic estimation in marketing. In Chapter 1, I show that methods in marketing and advertising research lag behind other fields while drawing a clear path forward. In Chapter 2, I demonstrate that path in the context of a central topic in marketing effectiveness, brand advertising elasticities, while providing evidence of the presence of significant biases and overestimated brand effects in this literature stream, leading to updated brand advertising elasticity estimates. In Chapter 3, I estimate generalizable effects for primary demand advertising elasticities and showcase the benefits of and heterogeneity in a broad advertising meta-regression model that can be used to estimate both primary demand and secondary demand advertising effects under a variety of contexts and conditions. Finally, in Chapters 4 and 5, I distill prior findings in regard to the uses of advertising and other marketing instrument and indicator elasticities and detail how practitioners can utilize these indicators to improve marketing strategy
