Compression therapy in the prevention and treatment of venous diseases - A cross-sectional study
Introduction: The aim of the study was to evaluate nurses' knowledge of selected statements in the use of compression therapy in phlebology according to selected characteristics of nurses.
Material and methods: A cross-sectional study using a self-constructed 28-item questionnaire was conducted in 2023. Respondents included 330 nurses (103 practical, 179 general, and 48 general with specialization) from several dozen clinical workplaces in the Czech Republic. As part of the data analysis, descriptive, regression, and cluster analyses in an exploratory mode were applied.
Results: The respondents obtained an average of 19 points on the 16 multiple-choice items in the knowledge test, which is a 49% success rate on the test. They were most successful in answering question 19, which focused on the symptoms of venous thrombosis, and least successful in answering question 14, which focused on the method of checking the pressure under the bandage. Work position had the greatest influence on the level of knowledge. Practical nurses scored almost 3 points more on the test and general nurses about 2 points more than specialized nurses. The respondents' post-graduate education also had a positive effect on their knowledge (in terms of factual and statistical significance).
Conclusions: The results of the study show that there are major deficiencies in the application of compression therapy among the respondents. Improper compression can cause complications that can seriously harm the patient. Health care providers should provide mandatory training for nurses
Investigation of physical properties of polymer composites filled with sheep wool
Sheep farmers are currently facing an oversupply of wool and a lack of willing buyers. Due to low prices, sheep wool is often either dumped, burned, or sent to landfills, which are unsustainable and environmentally unfriendly practices. One potential solution is the utilization of sheep wool fibers in polymer composites. This paper focuses on the study of mechanical vibration damping properties, sound absorption, light transmission, electrical conductivity of epoxy (EP), polyurethane (PU), and polyester (PES) resins, each filled with three different concentrations of sheep wool (i.e., 0%, 3%, and 5% by weight). It can be concluded that the sheep wool content in the polymer composites significantly influenced their physical properties. The impact of light transmission through the tested sheep wool fiber-filled polymer composites on the quality of daylight in a reference room was also mathematically simulated using Wdls 5.0 software.Internal Grant of Tomas Bata University in Zlin [IGA/FT/2024/002]; European Union [CZ.10.03.01/00/22_003/0000048
Detecting and date-stamping bubbles in fan tokens
We focus on the existence of bubbles in fan tokens, utilizing the Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (SADF) and Generalized Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (GSADF) tests. We use daily closing prices of the top 20 fan tokens according to their market capitalization, along with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Chiliz. The evidence from the GSADF test results indicates that the prices of 13 out of 20 fan tokens and the three cryptocurrencies have explosive periods associated with bubbles. Our results also show that the percentage of bubble days is between 0 % and 5% for all fan tokens. Among the 13 fan tokens exhibiting bubble behavior in their prices, nine have multiple sub-periods associated with bubbles, while only four tokens have a single sub-period with explosive prices. Bubbles in token prices are short-lived bubbles; most last for a few days. As a robustness analysis, we also perform LPPLS (Log-Periodic Power Law Singularity), providing similar results. Further analysis shows that trading volume, fan token return, Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU), Daily Infectious Disease Equity Market Volatility (EMVID) are positively associated with the presence of bubbles in fan token prices, while oil return is negatively associated with bubbles
Trade-off between high performance and long life due to nanofiller effects in polymer LEDs: MEH-PPV/Al2O3 nanocomposite study
This work presents the effect of nanofiller (Al2O3) in the polymer matrix MEH-PPV - Poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] on optical, optoelectronic, and electrical properties. These properties were investigated using UV–Vis absorption, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Exciton diffusion length was examined using the surface photovoltage (SPV) method, mobility of charge carriers was evaluated with charge extraction by linearly increasing voltage (CELIV) measurements. Information concerning the band structure was obtained using energy resolved-electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (ER-EIS). The influence of nanoparticles on the development of the micro structure in thin layers was examine with grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS). Prepared nanocomposite thin films were subsequently used as active layers in polymer light-emitting diodes. Luminance, current efficiency, and stability of prepared polymer light emitting diodes were tested. The presented work clarifies the effect of non-conductive nanofiller on the properties of the polymer matrix and on the performance of OLEDs with an active layer made of nanocomposite material.DKRVO, (RP/CPS/2022/007); Internal Grant Agency of Tomas Bata University, (IGA/CPS/2023/006, IGA/CPS/2024/002); Ministerstvo Školství, Mládeže a Tělovýchovy, MŠMT; Agentúra na Podporu Výskumu a Vývoja, APVV, (APVV-22-0132); Vedecká Grantová Agentúra MŠVVaŠ SR a SAV, VEGA, (2/0165/22)Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic [RP/CPS/2022/007]; Internal Grant Agency of Tomas Bata University in Zln [IGA/CPS/2023/006, IGA/CPS/2024/002]; Slovak Scientific Grant Agency VEGA [2/0165/22]; Slovak Research and Development Agency [APVV-22-0132
Effect of weather, nitrogen fertilizer, and biostimulators on the root size and yield components of Hordeum vulgare
In this study, the effect of nitrogen doses (52, 80, 110, 140 kg/ha N) and the application of biostimulant preparations containing Ascophyllum nodosum L. algae extract were assessed. During the years 2018-2019, the influence of the preparations on the electrical capacity of the roots (C R) and yield components of spring barley was determined. Root electrical capacitance was determined in growth stages 45-50, 55-65, and 70-75 according to the BBCH-scale. The best phases of vegetation growth for the application of biostimulators with Ascophyllum nodosum extract were the barley tillering and elongation phases. This application increased C R while reducing the amount of N required to achieve similar or higher production of barley yield components compared to high N treatments. The root electrical capacitance, the number of productive tillers, and the number of grains per plant were significantly influenced (p > 0.05) by the weather of the year. The number of productive tillers was closely correlated with C R (r = 0.912∗∗) as well as the number of grains per plant (r = 0.859∗∗) and their weight (r = 0.850∗∗). These relationships were the highest at the beginning of the grain formation (BBCH 70-75). Foliar biostimulation was not very effective in the dry year of 2018. The problem may be the foliar application itself. The effect of foliar application is strongly dependent on weather conditions and may be ineffective in many cases. We recommend the foliar application of effective biostimulants in tillering and elongation phases. They can reduce production costs and environmental pollution by reducing the amount of fertilizer needed while maintaining yields.Internal Grant Agency of Mendel University in Brno [AF-IGA2019-IP053
Wpływ bezpośrednich inwestycji zagranicznych w Południowo-Wschodniej Azji na zarządzanie środowiskiem: implikacje dla polityki
This study investigated the nexus between environmental pollution measured by carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen dioxide (N2O) and net Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), along with some other variables, namely economic growth by gross domestic product per capita, trade openness, manufacturing, political stability, urbanization, and population growth, using annual data of 11 countries from Southeast Asia for the period from 1999 to 2019. After testing the suitability of the fixed effects and random effects model, this study used the former. The results show that FDI inflows cause CO2 levels to increase in Southeast Asia, supporting Pollution Heaven Theory. However, as for N2O level, the result is not significant, meaning that there is no relationship between FDI inflows and N2O level. Other variables, including GDP and trade openness, negatively affect the environment in Southeast Asia as well. Some recommendations for the Southeast Asia government are also provided to improve the environmental condition in this region.W niniejszym badaniu zbadano związek między zanieczyszczeniem środowiska mierzonym dwutlenkiem węgla (CO2), dwutlenkiem azotu (N2O) i bezpośrednimi inwestycjami zagranicznymi netto (BIZ), wraz z kilkoma innymi zmiennymi, a mianowicie: wzrostem gospodarczym według produktu krajowego brutto na mieszkańca, otwartością handlową, produkcją, stabilnością polityczną, urbanizacją i wzrostem liczby ludności, wykorzystując roczne dane 11 krajów z Azji Południowo-Wschodniej za okres od 1999 do 2019 roku. Dau Mot University, Binh Duong Province, Vietnam [DT.22.1-034
Study of processing conditions during enzymatic hydrolysis of deer by-product tallow for targeted changes at the molecular level and properties of modified fats
In most cases, the unused by-products of venison, including deer tallow, are disposed of in rendering plants. Deer tallow contains essential fatty acids and can be used to prepare products for everyday food and advanced applications. This work aimed to process deer tallow into hydrolyzed products using microbial lipases. A Taguchi design with three process factors at three levels was used to optimize the processing: amount of water (8, 16, 24%), amount of enzyme (2, 4, 6%), and reaction time (2, 4, 6 h). The conversion of the tallow to hydrolyzed products was expressed by the degree of hydrolysis. The oxidative stability of the prepared products was determined by the peroxide value and the free fatty acids by the acid value; further, color change, textural properties (hardness, spreadability, stickiness, and adhesiveness), and changes at the molecular level were observed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The degree of hydrolysis was 11.8–49.6%; the peroxide value ranged from 12.3 to 29.5 µval/g, and the color change of the samples expressed by the change in the total color difference (∆E*) was 1.9–13.5. The conditions of enzymatic hydrolysis strongly influenced the textural properties: hardness 25–50 N, spreadability 20–40 N/s, and stickiness < 0.06 N. FTIR showed that there are changes at the molecular level manifested by a decrease in ester bonds. Enzymatically hydrolyzed deer tallow is suitable for preparing cosmetics and pharmaceutical matrices.Faculty of Technology; Univerzita Tomáše Bati ve Zlíně, UTB, (IGA/FT/2024/005); Univerzita Tomáše Bati ve Zlíně, UTBInternal Grant Agency of the Faculty of Technology, Tomas Bata University in Zlin [IGA/FT/2024/005
Antimicrobial coating of nanofibrous membrane for air filtration
As air pollution is becoming a severe problem, especially in developing countries, it is necessary to seek the protection. It is well known that fine particle matter is the cause of some respiratory diseases, but recently, it has been found that they can also absorb aerosols with viruses and facilitate their easier spreading, thanks to their big area volume ratio. This leads to the development of antimicrobial and antiviral materials, which is the topic of this study. This contribution presents prepared nanofibers sprayed by electrospraying in an electrostatic field with chitosan, functioning as an antimicrobial agent. Chitosan is a natural, biodegradable polymer with low solubility in water. Because of this reason, diluted acetic acid was used. Polyethylene oxide was added to the solution to ensure electrospraying. Two types of polyurethane and polylactide acid were used as nanofibrous mats for spraying. These coated nanofibrous membranes were tested for their air filtration properties, such as filtration efficiency and pressure drop, porosity, antimicrobial activity and morphological structure. The filtration efficiency remained similar to pure polymer nanofiber membranes. However, the pressure drop has increased in most cases significantly. It has been achieved antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. These nanofibers are prepared for utilization in filtration systems.Ministerstvo Školství, Mládeže a Tělovýchovy, MŠMT, (RP/CPS/2022/002); TBU in Zlin, (IGA/CPS/2023/002)Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports of the Czech Republic [RP/CPS/2022/002]; Internal Grant Agency of TBU in Zlin [IGA/CPS/2023/002
Nesting BiVO4 nanoislands in ZnO nanodendrites by two-step electrodeposition for efficient solar water splitting
Photoanodes with a large electrochemically active surface area, rapid charge transfer, and broadband light harvesting capacity are required to maximize the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting performance. To address these features, we demonstrate that 3D hierarchal ZnO nanodendrites (NDs) can be sensitized with BiVO4 nanoislands by chemical and thermal treatments of electrodeposited Bi metal films. The flat band measurements and optical characterization suggested that the resulting heterojunction had type-II band alignment with a viable charge transfer from BiVO4 to ZnO NDs. In parallel, PL analysis revealed inhibition of the charge recombination rate by the electron transfer between BiVO4 and ZnO NDs. Upon AM 1.5 G illumination, BiVO4/ZnO NDs heterojunction yielded the highest photocurrent efficiency (0.15 mA·cm−2 at 1.2 V vs. NHE), which was attributed to its enhanced surface area (due to the presence of small dendrite branches), extended broadband light absorption extending from UV to visible light regions, and the most efficient interfacial charge transfer as proven by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies. Besides, the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency and applied bias photon-to-current efficiency tests confirmed an improved spectral photoresponse of the heterojunction based photoanode, particularly towards the visible light spectrum. The results outline a promising synthesis route for building heterojunctions between visible light active and wide band gap semiconductors for the use as a highly efficient photoanodes in a PEC cell.Intelligence & Talent for the Zlín Region; Changzhou Institute of Technology, CIT; Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic DKRVO, (RP/CPS/2024-28/007); INTER-EXCELLENCE, (LTT20010); Horizon 2020 Framework Programme, H2020, (739566); Horizon 2020 Framework Programme, H2020; Agentúra na Podporu Výskumu a Vývoja, APVV, (VEGA 1/0844/21); Agentúra na Podporu Výskumu a Vývoja, APVVMinistry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic DKRVO [RP/CPS/2024-28/007]; INTER-EXCELLENCE [LTT20010]; European Union [739566]; Slovak Research and Development Agency under Grant VEGA [1/0844/21]; Creativity, Intelligence & Talent for the Zlin Region (CIT - ZK) programm
