The impact of institutional pressures on corporate social responsibility and green marketing adoption: an empirical approach in Vietnam banking industry
Purpose: Institutional pressure and corporate social responsibility (CSR) are gaining increasing recognition in scholarly works; however, there is an apparent and unsettled relationship between these concepts and the concept of green marketing adoption (GMA) that influences efforts to gain a relative competitive advantage (RCA). This study is aimed at examining the roles of institutional pressure and CSR on GMA and RCA and proposes recommendations for promoting green marketing management and CSC in the banking industry in Vietnam.
Design/methodology/approach: In this study, partial least squares structural equation modeling is utilized to investigate the evolution of the structural model, while the hypotheses are evaluated using structural equation modeling (SEM). The data are scrutinized from 288 banking employees through an online survey.
Findings: The results show that the components of institutional pressure exert a significant impact on GMA and RCA, but the level and type of this impact differ. Additionally, the mediating role of the CSR variable in this relationship is revealed. Under the influence of institutional pressure, companies tend to increase their implementation of CSR activities, thereby promoting their GMA and RCA.
Originality/value: This study offers both theoretical and practical implications. Theoretically, this study adds to the extant evidence concerning the significance of CSR integration and institutional pressure to the advancement of GMA. In addition, maintaining a focus on fostering holistic GMA practices has enabled the banking industry in Vietnam to achieve an RCA
Evaluation of the machinability of CW614N brass alloy
Brass alloys are widely used materials for general and industrial applications. However, the lead content in them forces manufacturers to develop new ecological types, the properties of which must be gradually specified in order for the product to be produced and processed more efficiently. The article deals with the evaluation of the machinability of CW614 brass by investigating the influence of technological parameters on the surface roughness of the machined surface and the intensity of vibrations during machining. The measured data were statistically processed; with the help of regression analysis, mathematical formulations of the influence of input parameters on monitored variables were defined and based on them, functional dependencies were plotted in the MATLAB software application. Effects of three tebuconazole nanopesticides on the survival of Daphnia magna
The growing pressure to reduce excessive pesticide use has led to exploring novel formulation methods, including nanoparticle carriers for active substances. However, these emerging nanopesticides need a thorough evaluation compared to current formulations to determine whether their “nano” properties intensify toxicity for non-target organisms. This study assessed the lethal toxicity of three nanopesticides on Daphnia magna. The nanopesticides tested were tebuconazole loaded onto poly-ϵ-caprolactone, nanostructured lipid carriers, and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) nanoparticles. Additionally, the study evaluated the toxicity of nanocarriers without loaded tebuconazole, a commercial tebuconazole formulation, and tebuconazole (pure). Effects were studied across a series of dilutions to examine the impacts on tebuconazole chemistry (total and free concentrations) and particle physics (size, heterogeneity, and density). D. magna exhibited varied responses to polymeric and lipid nanoformulations of tebuconazole and unloaded nanocarriers. The observed toxicity levels, from highest to lowest, were as follows: pure tebuconazole > tebuconazole-loaded on nanostructured lipid carriers > commercial tebuconazole > tebuconazole-loaded on poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) nanoparticles > tebuconazole-loaded on poly-ϵ-caprolactone. The mechanisms underlying the observed toxicity can generally be attributed to chemical factors (tebuconazole's free concentration and particle composition) and physical aspects (particle size and concentration). The study also revealed that dilution series can influence particle size and homogeneity, affecting the loaded substance's chemistry. This implies that the toxicity testing of nanopesticides is complex and not as straightforward as traditional dose-response modeling. An optimization approach for an order-picking warehouse: An empirical case
Order-picking optimization in a business sustainable competitiveness context is challenging due to prior studies focusing on theoretical model development with unrealistic assumptions in their algorithms and methodological validation, often neglecting practical concerns. This paper improves order-picking operations by employing combinatorial optimization as a travelling salesman problem and class-based dedicated storage models for the ATP company. The paper's originality and novelty lie in bridging the gap between academia and management, presenting an effort to connect theoretical concepts with practical optimization in order-picking warehouse operations in an environment of competitiveness. Realistic data and LINGO software were employed, revealing substantial improvements in the ATP warehouse operations through optimized pick path decisions embedded in warehouse layouts. This paper provides managerial tools for distance traveled optimization in the warehouse that yield competitive edges, enhanced supply chain efficiency and effectiveness, as well as other positive impacts on social, and environmental concerns such as labor safety, customer satisfaction, energy consumption, and CO2 emission. The paper also outlines future research directions to advance warehouse management and address sustainable competitiveness challenges, adding a new dimension to the original research
Joining a currency union to improve financial development and competitiveness: The case of Slovakia
Enhancing competitiveness is a priority for nations seeking to promote economic growth. One of the critical drivers of a nation's sustainable competitiveness is financial system development. However, whether joining a currency union has a positive impact on a country's financial system development requires further investigation. This study evaluates the impact of euro adoption on Slovakia's financial system development using a synthetic control method with lasso regularization methodology. A comprehensive index that captures the depth, access, and efficiency of financial institutions and markets is used to measure financial system development. Based on a donor pool composed of non-euro OECD countries, the analysis constructs a synthetic counterfactual of Slovakia's financial system development had it not adopted the euro in 2009. This enables a comparison between real and synthetic Slovakia. The results show that Slovakia's transition to the common currency contributed positively to the development of its financial system. The findings show that from 2010 - 2021, Slovakia realized a 19 percent increase in its financial system development relative to the counterfactual after adopting the euro. Robustness checks using a different donor pool and alternative specification with additional covariates produce varied, but still positive, effects confirming the study's main findings.Chapman University; Tomas Bata University in Zlín, TBUTomas Bata University in Zli
Exploring hybrid models for short-term local weather forecasting in IoT environment
This paper explores using and hybridizing simple prediction models to maximize the accuracy of local weather prediction while maintaining low computational effort and the need to process and acquire large volumes of data. A hybrid RF-LSTM model is proposed and evaluated in this research paper for the task of short-term local weather forecasting. The local weather stations are built within an acceptable radius of the measured area and are designed to provide a short period of forecasting-usually within one hour. The lack of local weather data might be problematic for an accurate short-term valuable prediction in sustainable applications like agriculture, transportation, energy management, and daily life. Weather forecasting is not trivial because of the non-linear nature of time series. Thus, traditional forecasting methods cannot predict the weather accurately. The advantage of the ARIMA model lies in forecasting the linear part, while the SVR model indicates the non-linear characteristic of the weather data. Both non-linear and linear approaches can represent the combined model. The hybrid ARIMA-SVR model strengthens the matched points of the ARIMA model and the SVR model in weather forecasting. The LSTM and random forest are both popular algorithms used for regression problems. LSTM is more suitable for tasks involving sequential data with long-term dependencies. Random Forest leverages the wisdom of crowds by combining multiple decision trees, providing robust predictions, and reducing overfitting. Hybrid Random forest-LSTM potentially leverages the robustness and feature importance of Random Forest along with the ability of LSTM to capture sequential dependencies. The comparison results show that the hybrid RF-LSTM model reduces the forecasting errors in metrics of MAE, R-squared, and RMSE. The proposed hybrid model can also capture the actual temperature trend in its prediction performance, which makes it even more relevant for many other possible decision-making steps in sustainable applications. Furthermore, this paper also proposes the design of a weather station based on a real-time edge IoT system. The RF-LSTM leverages the parallelized characteristics of each decision tree in the forest to accelerate the training process and faster inferences. Thus, the hybrid RF-LSTM model offers advantages in terms of faster execution speed and computational efficiency in both PC and Raspberry Pi boards. However, the RF-LSTM consumes the highest peak memory usage due to being a combination of two different models
Use of dynamic biometric signature in communication of company
The basis of effective communication in an organization is a safe flow of information. Secure communication does not only mean protection against theft or impairment of information but also unambiguous identification and authentication of all communication users. More precisely, the information was given to the right place and to the right person according to their area of activity and responsibility. Information systems are constantly facing new, more sophisticated cyber attacks, against which forms of security must be continuously updated. The article is therefore focused on the question of how to reliably authenticate users and prevent unauthorized access and misuse. The aim of the article is to clearly provide complete information on the possibilities of identification and authentication using biometric methods in the corporate practice of electronic communication. The usability of biometric technologies, the principle of their functionality, and examples of use are offered here. The introduction presents the distribution of authentication factors as well as possible suitable combinations of these authentication factors. Describes authentication methods, along with their advantages and disadvantages. Dynamic biometric methods will be examined in detail, especially the dynamic biometric signature, which is natural, easily accessible, and therefore a suitable tool for effective and secure communication. The following is an analysis of the issue of dynamic biometric signature technology, and the appropriateness of its implementation will be examined from a comprehensive point of view, including consideration of own and foreign research. Assessing the factors impacting shipping container dwell time: A multi-port optimization study
Ocean transportation is the most preferred mode of transportation that represents a significant role in the global trade. Ocean transportation comprises around 80% of the aggregate worldwide cargo volume. This research paper focused on evaluating the factors that influence the dwell time of the shipping containers. Dwell time is one of the important port performance parameters which evaluates the time spent by the container in a port. In this research, the data from the fourteen major ports was collected and analysed across the variables, such as cycle, size, mode, status, delivery and tracking technology for evaluating the variation in container dwell time. OLS regression method (Ordinary least squares) along with independent sample T test was adopted for the analysis of 2.8 million container data entries utilizing python for big data analysis and SPSS. For the top three ports with lowest RMSE (Root mean square error), Port A – 15.6 %, Port G – 15.7 % and Port L – 15.86 %, a qualitative study was performed to identify the reasons for the variation in dwell time. The major reasons identified included free days period, trans-shipment port, high rail frequency, industrial hubs in the vicinity of the ports for lower dwell time. The effect of laser beam on the width of the cut
Conventional methods of dividing material due to their limitation to straight cuts have largely been replaced by non-conventional cutting methods, which include laser cutting. Laser cutting of polymer materials has become a priority for the manufacturing industry, mainly due to the constantly growing demand for these materials. The article discusses the effect of the laser beam on the width of the cut using lenses with different focal lengths, under different working conditions, on samples made of PMMA polymer material plates. For the experiment, the samples were produced using an ILS 3NM laser device, a CO2, with a wavelength of 10.6 μm and with maximum power 100 W, maximum feed speed 1524 mm · s-1. Efficient time-delay system optimization with auto-configured metaheuristics
This paper presents an experimental study that compares the performance of four selected metaheuristic algorithms for optimizing a time delay system model. Time delay system models are complex and challenging to optimize due to their inherent characteristics, such as non-linearity, multi-modality, and constraints. The study includes an explanation of the choice and core functionality of the selected algorithms, which are both baseline and state-of-the-art variants of self-organizing migrating algorithm (SOMA), state-of-the-art variant from the Success-History-based Adaptive Differential Evolution family of algorithms, with emphasis on diverse search (DISH algorithm), and Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES) algorithm. The hyperparameters of the metaheuristic algorithms were set using the iRace automatic algorithm configuration framework. The paper emphasizes the importance of metaheuristic algorithms in control engineering for time-delay systems to develop more effective and efficient control strategies and precise model identifications. The experimental results highlight the effectiveness of the state-of-the-art algorithms with specific adaptive mechanisms like population organization process, diverse search and adaptation mechanisms ensuring a gradual transition from exploration to exploitation. Overall, this study contributes to understanding the challenges and advantages of using metaheuristic algorithms in control engineering for time delay systems.
