    Relationship between fintech by Google search and bank stock return: a case study of Vietnam

    Due to the ongoing global debate regarding the relationship between fintech and banks, including developing countries, this study aims to investigate this relationship in the case of Vietnam, an emerging nation. The study analyzes the relationship between fintech search and bank stock returns, which are measures of fintech and banks, respectively. The time series data for fintech and bank stock returns were obtained from Google Trends and Vietstock, respectively. Exploratory factor analysis was utilized to derive the fintech variables, while the bank stock return variable was calculated using a basket of eight listed banks from 2017w46 to 2021w46. The results were estimated using the vector autoregression and Granger causality method and validated with the copula method. A key finding of this study is the presence of a simultaneous negative change and bidirectional causality between bank stock returns and fintech lending. Furthermore, several other interesting findings were discovered: (1) the causal relationship from fintech to bank stock returns is weaker compared with the opposite direction; (2) unidirectional causality exists between different types of fintech, such as influence from FinFintech to FinLending, from FinPayment to FinLending and FinWallet, from FinMoney to FinFintech, from FinWallet to FinLending, and from FinProduct to FinFintech; and (3) there is an equal occurrence of simultaneous increase or decrease between bank stock returns and certain types of fintech, specifically between BankReturn and FinPayment, BankReturn and FinLending, as well as BankReturn and FinWallet.     Sustainability of gender employment and pay gap types regarding female participation in corporate management

    The main goal of the study is to investigate the various types of the gender employment gap, the gender pay gap, and female participation in corporate management. These aspects have become even more important in the recent period. The comprehensive analysis of the eleven indicators demonstrates the fields of further examination. The employed panel regression analysis reveals that all the explored types of gender employment gaps along with the gender pay gap are statistically significant according to the certain regression models. All the gender employment gap types aimed at the geographical localisation are statistically significant regarding their impact on the eco-innovations. The second group of the gender employment gap types related to the work type behave in the same way reaching the highest levels of statistical significance. Similarly, the gender pay gap demonstrates statistical significance for its impact on the eco-innovations. Finally, female participation in corporate management achieves the highest statistical significance levels too. These outcomes point to the need for an observation of the particular effects assigned to the statistically significant regression models. Altogether, the two-way effect shows a very low level of statistical significance, while the time effect and the individual effect behave at a considerably higher level. It could be concluded that these effect types represent almost the same applicability. Hence, the position of the individual countries could be investigated in the further examination in order to demonstrate the disparities among the countries.     Carboxymethylated and sulfated furcellaran from furcellaria lumbricalis and its immobilization on PLA scaffolds

    This study involved the creation of highly porous PLA scaffolds through the porogen/leaching method, utilizing polyethylene glycol as a porogen with a 75% mass ratio. The outcome achieved a highly interconnected porous structure with a thickness of 25 μm. To activate the scaffold’s surface and improve its hydrophilicity, radiofrequency (RF) air plasma treatment was employed. Subsequently, furcellaran subjected to sulfation or carboxymethylation was deposited onto the RF plasma treated surfaces with the intention of improving bioactivity. Surface roughness and water wettability experienced enhancement following the surface modification. The incorporation of sulfate/carboxymethyl group (DS = 0.8; 0.3, respectively) is confirmed by elemental analysis and FT-IR. Successful functionalization of PLA scaffolds was validated by SEM and XPS analysis, showing changes in topography and increases in characteristic elements (N, S, Na) for sulfated (SF) and carboxymethylated (CMF).     The newsvendor problem with normal, worst-case and binomial distribution of demand: Managerial implications with examples

    The paper examines the newsvendor problem with demand distributions commonly used in the literature. Optimal order convergence is checked numerically. An important contribution is that the expected profits differ considerably in nominal and relative terms when the profit-loss ratio is low valued while the demand variability is at least moderate. Missed expected profit reaches even 10% of total order cost for a mark-up that equals to the worst case break even one. The optimal order quantities are compared to counterparts derived from sales data. The main managerial implication indicates that the normal distribution solution outperforms distribution-free solutions in predicting the maximal expected profit under empirical demand. Therefore, the MaxiMin solution is recommended to be used in practice to simplify the maximal expected profit calculus and for break-even mark-up evaluation. However, it should not be used to solve the optimal order quantity because the worst-case distribution asymmetry is determined by the profit-to-loss ratio and can be contradictory to the asymmetry of sales data.     Effect of public and private sector R&D indicators on innovation performance and competitiveness: Case of the western European NUTS 2 regions

    Innovation performance is considered a crucial indicator of the competitiveness of countries and regions. Studies on innovation performance also need to assess it, distinguishing between public and private sector R&D indicators at the regional level. The objectives of this article are to explore the groups of innovation performance and their spatial distribution in NUTS 2 Western European regions and to evaluate the effect of selected public and private sector R&D indicators on innovation performance in 2014-2021. The fixed effects model on the panel data was used to analyse the impact of selected public and private sector R&D indicators on innovation performance. Research shows that innovation performance increases with time; however, performance suffers from regional disparities, which are affected by selected structural determinants from the public and private sector perspectives. The results of the panel data analysis suggest that the population aged 25-34 who have completed their tertiary education, the most cited scientific publications, and public-private co-publications are statistically significant R&D public sector indicators for the innovation performance of Western European NUTS 2 regions. Furthermore, the results indicate that SMEs that introduce product innovations, employment in knowledge-intensive activities, patent applications, and innovative SMEs that collaborate with others are statistically significant private sector R&D indicators. However, the results reveal various effects of these indicators on individual groups of innovation performance in both the public and private sectors.     Propylene metathesis over molybdenum silicate microspheres with dispersed active sites

    In this work, we demonstrate that amorphous and porous molybdenum silicate microspheres are highly active catalysts for heterogeneous propylene metathesis. Homogeneous molybdenum silicate microspheres and aluminum-doped molybdenum silicate microspheres were synthesized via a nonaqueous condensation of a hybrid molybdenum biphenyldicarboxylate-based precursor solution with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane. The as-prepared hybrid metallosilicate products were calcined at 500 °C to obtain amorphous and porous molybdenum silicate and aluminum-doped molybdenum silicate microspheres with highly dispersed molybdate species inserted into the silicate matrix. These catalysts contain mainly highly dispersed MoOx species, which possess high catalytic activity in heterogeneous propylene metathesis to ethylene and butene.     Discussion on stakeholders behind unfair drug pricing: A scoping review

    An unsettling issue for people worldwide has been the rise in medicine prices. The news routinely reports on surprising drug price increases; however, the general public is less informed about the real reason for increasing medicine prices. Although there are a number of parties involved in the drug price increase, it is unclear to whom the increase can be directly attributed. This study used the scoping review method, to map the literature on the topic. It answers a research question concerning stakeholder responsibility for increased drug prices. To do so, the authors conducted a literature survey of different scientific research databases between 2018 to 2022, using two key phrases: "unfair drug price" and "drug price stakeholders." In the study, a total of 26 papers were full-text reviewed out of 323 papers that were initially identified. The cost-effectiveness of new medications that must go through the pricing and reimbursement procedure is routinely assessed by the pharmaceutical industry. However, because there is a data gap, it is impossible to assess the relationship between drug costs and demand over a longer time period, to identify the drugs that are not covered by health insurance, or to determine the role of health insurance in rising drug prices. Even so, the scoping review reveals more evidence that pharmaceutical corporations have the ability to determine prices, undermining the idea that the health insurance industry is the primary cause of price increases

    A fused electrocardiography arrhythmia detection method

    Recently, Electrocardiography (ECG) signals are commonly used in diagnosing the cardiac arrhythmia that shows up with the loss of the regular movement of the heart. Approximately 5% of the world population have cardio motor disorders. Therefore, usage of the ECG signals in biomedical signal processing algorithms and machine learning methods for automated diagnosis of this widespread health problem is a popular research topic. In this paper, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique is implemented to tune the parameters of Tunable Q-Factor Wavelet Transform (TQWT) and the new generation feature generator Hamsi Hash Function (Hamsi-Pat) is used to obtain the characteristics of the signal. Sub-signals of 10 s obtained from the original ECG signal are divided into their sub-bands of 25 levels with PSO and TQWT. Each of these low pass filters generates 536 dimensional features by applying Hamsi-Pat and statistical methods. Then, all these features are combined and 536 × 25 = 13400-dimensional feature set is obtained. The features in the set are reduced and the best of them are selected by using the Iterative Neighborhood Component Analysis (INCA) method. Finally, the k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN) classification method is applied to the best features according to the City Block measurement criterion. All studies cited to compare the results in this paper also use the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia ECG database. Hence, the difference could be observed in the used techniques. In contrast to the existing studies, this study shows its superior performance by classifying all 17 classes simultaneously by applying a “fused” approach. The method in the paper reached 98.5% classification accuracy on the 17 classes of the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia ECG database. The results indicate that the proposed method showed better rates from the existing studies related to arrhythmia diagnosis using ECG signals in the literature

    Europe is currently facing an immigration crisis, which brings challenges as well as potential problems and risks associated with it. Some people in our society are afraid of the presence of these people, experts in this field also draw attention to this. The article is focused on the process of migration to Europe in the 20th and 21st centuries and changes in its perception. One of the chapters of this article analyzes troubled regions and the reasons why people leave them. It also points to the European regions most affected by immigrants. Another chapter from part of the article assesses the potential risk with the arrival of refugees and immigrants to Europe. Ways to prevent and address them at the national and international level are presented here.     On the measurement of far field intensities generated by cables shielded with composites showing electromagnetic losses

    Electromagnetic compatibility is a significant problem for electronic system developers, especially cabling, which is often the weakest link of the assembly, therefore a bigger emphasis is put on its securing. Recently, a significant progress has been achieved in synthetic electromagnetically lossy materials. Therefore, new cable designs using these cable sheath materials can be soon expected both in applied research and in development. At the same time, reliable measurements of such shielding effectiveness are needed, especially in terms of the far field. While most publications about synthetic electromagnetic lossy materials deal with their measurement via coaxial transmission lines (the ASTM method), far-field measurements have not been sufficiently discussed. In this paper, several phenomena related to this topic are discussed, further, an experiment testing two different cable specimens is realized and the results are compared.
