    Ethnic Differences in Health-Related Quality of Life, Physical Activity, and Health Locus of Control

    International Journal of Exercise Science 18(8): 1072-1085, 2025. https://doi.org/10.70252/STUM6367 This research aimed to better understand the differences in health-related quality of life (HRQoL: general health, physical functioning), physical activity (PA), and health locus of control (HLOC: internal, external-chance, external-powerful others, God) among various ethnic groups. The study’s sample included 185 individuals, 22 - 81 years of age, who were attending or employed by one of three religiously-affiliated higher education institutions during the 2020-2021 academic year. Participants voluntarily answered questions about their ethnic identity, HRQoL, PA level, and HLOC. To analyze the interaction of HRQoL, PA, and HLOC, a multiple regression analysis was conducted. Results showed the majority of respondents of all ethnicities had moderate to high levels of PA, which is opposite of CDC data. However, the scores for HLOC and HRQoL varied widely among ethnicities, with minority groups showing higher scores for external HLOC categories (chance, powerful others, God), as well as lower scores for both HRQoL categories (general health, physical functioning). Such differences call for better understanding of HLOC and HRQoL in different ethnic groups, which would allow for better tailoring of health education and promotion programming

    Influence of Carbon-fiber Shoes on Outdoor Running Biomechanics as Assessed with Wearable Sensors

    International Journal of Exercise Science 18(7): 1121-1132, 2025. https://doi.org/10.70252/JMBI4851 Carbon-fiber shoes feature a stiff yet lightweight curved carbon-fiber plate embedded in the sole and a resilient midsole foam. These shoes create spring-like rebounding effect that has proven to decrease energy consumption and enhance athletic performance. To date, most biomechanics research on carbon-fiber shoes has been laboratory-based. The purpose of our study was to compare running biomechanics in competitive runners wearing carbon-fiber shoes or traditional shoes using wearable sensors on an outdoor composite track. Ten elite runners (9F, 1M) who consistently ran over 30 miles per week and owned a pair of carbon-fiber shoes participated. The experiment consisted of three 40-meter run trials in carbon-fiber shoes and three trials in traditional running shoes. The self-selected speed was held constant between the two conditions. Two Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) were strapped on subject’s right foot and tibia to measure biomechanical parameters including tibial acceleration, eversion velocity, stance time, stride frequency, sagittal plane angular velocity of the foot at toe-off, and sagittal plane angular acceleration of the foot during propulsion. A paired sample t test was used to compare between shoe conditions. Sagittal plane angular acceleration of the foot during propulsion was significantly greater in the carbon-fiber shoes, 8774.4±4348.2, compared to 7492.9±3495.0 for traditional shoes (P=0.01, Cohen’s d=0.513). Additionally, sagittal plane angular velocity of the foot at toe-off approached significance (carbon-fiber: 953.1±227.9deg/sec, traditional: 881.0±216.1deg/sec, P=0.082, Cohen’s d=0.326). No other differences were noted. Carbon-fiber shoes create a more efficient toe-off by providing greater propulsive acceleration during push-off

    The Effects of Combined Fasting and Exercise on Inflammatory Cytokine Concentrations in Healthy Adults: A Randomized Crossover Study

    International Journal of Exercise Science 18(6): 1252-1268, 2025. https://doi.org/10.70252/APHT9483 The object was to assess the effects of adding exercise to a 36-hour fast on the inflammatory cytokines IL-6, TNF-α, and MCP-1. The study was a randomized crossover design with counterbalanced conditions in community members living near a single academic institution. Participants included twenty healthy adults (11 male). The intervention consisted of two 36-h water-only fasts, one of which was initiated with a bout of treadmill exercise. Venous blood was taken at baseline, 12-h, 24-h, and 36-h of fasting. Area under the curve and timepoint analyses were computed. The area under the curve for MCP-1 was 210.4 ± 61.4 pg/ml higher in the fasting combined with exercise condition compared to fasting alone (F = 4.69, p = 0.04).  No difference between conditions was observed in areas under the curve for IL-6 (F = 0.02, p = 0.88) or TNF-α (F = 3.74, p = 0.06).  MCP-1 concentrations decreased over the course of both conditions (F=19.77, p \u3c 0.01) with much of the reduction taking place between hours 12 and 24 (F=19.77, p \u3c 0.01). Concentrations of IL-6 remained unchanged (F = 0.85, p = 0.48) while TNF-α increased (F=8.60, p \u3c 0.05) in both conditions. A single fast has a mixed impact on the cytokines MCP-1, TNF-α and IL-6. MCP-1 decreases, while TNF-α fluctuates in a diurnal pattern, and IL-6 experiences no change during a water-only fast. Adding exercise to the beginning of a fast diminishes the decline in MCP-1 but has no impact on TNF-α or IL-6
