Gamifying simulated nursing education: a digital technology approach to enhancing pedagogy and student experience
No full textHigher educational institutions have responded to a shortage of clinical placements for students by adopting innovative approaches, such as the use of simulated learning environments. The integration of gamification in simulated placements presents a promising opportunity to enrich and diversify the learning experience. A series of game-based resources to support simulated practice learning was developed by the academic team at the University of Bolton. This study involved evaluating the experiences of students who engaged in these interactive scenarios to assess the potential impact of these digital interventions on learning. The findings indicate that the approach had a significant impact on student learning, improving both their knowledge and their confidence in applying procedures in practice.These findings are of particular significance since it is commonly considered that students in fields such as nursing, which are known for their emphasis on human-centred care, place less value on digital learning technologie
Reconceptualising pavement maintenance decision-making using GIS as a visualisation tool a case study exemplar
No full textThis study explores how a visualised GIS model can aid decision-making in pavement maintenance management, focusing on roads under Local Road Authorities (LRA) control in the U.K. Factors influencing decision-making in pavement maintenance were identified and ranked through a nationwide questionnaire survey, followed by interviews with LRA experts to validate the rated factors. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was employed to configure priority rankings. Subsequently, a GIS-based decision support model was developed and tested using Runnymede roads within Surrey County Council. Fourteen influential factors affecting pavement maintenance were identified and ranked. The GIS model was deemed a rational, simple, and usable tool for pavement management. With growing pressures on LRAs from limited budgets, increased accountability, and ageing roads facing higher traffic loads, efficient decision-making processes are crucial. GIS is a valuable tool for visualising results and optimising pavement maintenance strategies

To this end, the task of WP2 is to work with stakeholders on dilemmas related to climate change, carrying out activities to develop design challenges, design briefs and wireframes for games-based activities. This report summarises twelve pilots carried out to inform the design of these activities. Drink spiking? A case study of a university student and the impact of uncertainty and personal safety when drinking alcohol on THAT Friday night
No full textPurposeNearly half of 18–24-year-olds report drink spiking on themselves or someone they know. However, this is an under-researched topic and nearly all previous studies have focused on women. This study aims to help understand a possible spiking incident from a male perspective.Design/methodology/approachAn individual case study methodology, using a reflective account from a young male university student, was used to provide a personal interpretation of an incident at the university.FindingsAbnormal changes in behaviour and cognition were out of character and corresponded with spiking but were explained by paramedics and some friends as a result of excessive alcohol.Originality/valueFor the first time, this paper explores and helps understand the very personal and individual responses of a young male who was a likely spiking victim, providing the confusion, embarrassment and uncertainty of the situation. In addition, this situation highlights the need for personal vigilance while on a night out, as well as the training needs for emergency responders and nighttime staff and the understanding from friends and observers
Accumulation of perceived discrimination over time and likelihood of probable mental health problems in UK adults: A longitudinal cohort study
No full textLimited research has examined whether accumulation of discrimination over time is associated with worse mental health and whether such experiences are related to socioeconomic status (SES).A sample of UK adults with self-reported discrimination experiences (n = 3863) was taken from 3 waves of the UK Household Longitudinal Study (2015–2020). Multinomial logistic regression assessed associations between SES (income, education, occupation) and cumulative discrimination (number of timepoints discrimination was reported). Logistic regression models assessed prospective associations between cumulative discrimination and probable mental health problems (GHQ-12; 4+ threshold).Those with lower income were more likely to report discrimination at one timepoint (vs. none). No SES measures were associated with experiencing discrimination at multiple timepoints. Participants who reported one timepoint of discrimination (vs no experiences) were significantly more likely to report probable mental health problems (OR = 1.47, p < .001, 95 % CI 1.20–1.80). However, compared to those experiencing one timepoint, participants reporting multiple timepoints of discrimination were significantly more likely to report probable mental health problems (OR = 1.46, p = .002, 95 % CI 1.15–1.86), indicating a cumulative association between discrimination and mental health. There was limited evidence that SES moderated this cumulative association.Mental health measures were based on self-report questionnaires and not a clinical diagnosis.Amongst a sample of UK adults, perceiving discrimination at multiple timepoints increased the likelihood of experiencing probable mental health problems. There was limited evidence that this cumulative association differed by SES. National measures designed to reduce discrimination may benefit mental health

With each new journey, his grief trajectory unfolds, as his continuing bonds with them come into focus with each new city. The chapter is regularly punctuated by a dialogue between the author and his brother, and references to popular music and football. Their conversations shed light on their respective approaches to grief, and how these ultimately strengthen their relationship
Are Islamic bonds a safe choice for portfolio diversification in time of crisis? Evidence from volatility-causality analysis of Dubai financial market
No full textDespite the popularity and uniqueness of Sukuk as an alternative tradable financing tool, the effectiveness of these products in portfolio allocation and diversity is still under constant scrutiny. This paper employs the multivariate BEKK-GARCH (1,1) model to analyse shocks and volatility based on the daily prices of the Dubai Islamic Capital Market (Sukuk Index) and the conventional stock market (DFM Index). Additionally, it applies Johansen co-integration and Granger causality to investigate the persistence of shocks and volatility in long-term relationships, as well as the leading relationship between Islamic and conventional markets. The results validate the impact of their respective news feeds on both Sukuk and stock market indices and demonstrate the persistence of volatility throughout the studied period from April 2009 to December 2020. The causality test reveals a multidirectional relationship effect between Sukuk and stocks, where each is contributing to the other's growth. The study confirms that Sukuk is not a safe haven for portfolio diversification in the Dubai financial market
