Real-time Detection of Phishing Emails Using XG Boost Machine Learning Technique
No full textPhishing attacks continue to pose a significant threat to individuals and organizations, making it crucial to develop effective countermeasures. Machine learning algorithms have shown promise in detecting and mitigating phishing attacks. The study evaluates the performance of four popular algorithms in the context of phishing detection and compares the effectiveness of these four different algorithms; Random Forest, Decision Tree, XGBoost, and Logistic Regression, to determine which one achieves the highest accuracy. The results show that XGBoost outperforms the other algorithms and can accurately detect phishing attacks with a high degree of precision. The algorithms are compared based on factors such as training time, test time, model size, interpretability, and explainability. To compare the effectiveness of these algorithms, the study conducted experiments using a dataset of phishing emails. The algorithms were trained on a labeled dataset and evaluated based on metrics such as accuracy, precision, and recall. The results demonstrate that XGBoost outperforms the other algorithms, achieving the highest accuracy in detecting phishing attacks. The findings of this study have significant implications for the development of antiphishing technologies. By leveraging machine learning algorithms, particularly XGBoost, organizations can enhance their ability to detect and prevent phishing attacks. This can help protect individuals' personal information, passwords, and credit card numbers from falling into the hands of cybercriminals
The Hummingbird Project year 2: decreasing distress and fostering flourishing in a pragmatic pre–post study
No full textMulti-component Positive Psychology Interventions (mPPIs) in secondary schools have been shown to improve mental health outcomes for young people. The Hummingbird Project mPPI is a six-week program of workshops designed to introduce a variety of positive psychology (PP) concepts to secondary school-aged children in schools to improve well-being, resilience, and hope. The effects on mental distress, however, were not explored. The current study, therefore, was designed to replicate the effects of the Hummingbird Project mPPI on positive mental health and to also explore the effects on symptoms of mental distress. Secondary school-aged children (

= 614; mean age = 11.46 years) from a sample of secondary schools located across the North West of England (
N
= 7) participated in the study; the majority of children were in Year 7 (94%). The PP concepts explored included happiness, hope, resilience, mindfulness, character strengths, growth mindset, and gratitude. The results showed significant improvements associated with the mPPI in well-being (as measured by the World Health Organization Well-Being Index; WHO-5), hope (as measured by the Children’s Hope Scale; CHS), and symptoms of mental distress (as measured by the Young Person’s Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation; YP-CORE) from pre- to post-intervention. While acknowledging the limits due to pragmatic concerns regarding the implementation of a control group, the effectiveness of the Hummingbird Project mPPI on well-being was replicated alongside reducing the symptoms of mental distress. Future evaluation, however, will need to implement more robust designs and consider follow-up duration to assess the longer-term effects of the Hummingbird Project mPPI

No full textThe area of professional practice and my original contribution to the body of knowledge is aportfolio of evidence which covers three distinct elements. Firstly, how I led the developmentof Ada, a conversational service which supports students, teachers and campus supportteams in different contexts across the student life cycle; and FirstPass, which supportsstudents and teachers with the formative assessment of open-ended questions. Secondly,how the introduction of these services changed practices at Bolton College. And thirdly, howmy work led to changing practices in other further education colleges. The literature reviewand my portfolio of evidence are structured in a manner that supports a narrative whichdescribes how change management strategies were used to bring about the advent of a newand emerging EdTech category; namely, the campus digital assistant which can supportstudents across the student life cycle. And further still, how AIED services such as Ada andFirstPass were developed and nurtured through a collaborative and participatory model.This work is underpinned by two case studies which describe the change managementprogramme that I led. This manifested in the development of the Ada and FirstPass services.The case studies explore the steps that I led to invite organisations to collaborate and partnerwith the College; and how these steps influenced and shaped practice at the College andfurther afield. These case studies are supported by a portfolio of evidence which covers thelifespan of both services. At the time of writing, the Ada and FirstPass services continue toshape practice across the further education sector and evidence is presented to demonstratethese developments; notably through the use of larger scale pilots of both services
Time-series forecasting of crude oil production using hybrid modeling

It has always been an issue in the petroleum industry to forecast the production of crude oil to avoid disruption of supplies and keeping the prices of oil and commodities in control and thereby manage inflation. Hence, it becomes crucial to predict the production of crude oil. This study uses time series data to forecast crude oil production. Traditional statistical Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA).model and deep learning models like Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) are used for prediction and comparison. A hybrid technique is used to develop an ARIMA-ANN model to forecast crude oil production more accurately

Using Document Similarity Algorithms for Suicidal Detection in Social Media: A Case Study of User Tweets
No full textSuicidal Detection and treatment from the clinical and public health perspective is reactive. For an action whose consequences are irreversible, a reactive approach to the problem cannot be the answer. A proactive approach is needed to solve and detect Suicidal Intent. Social Media has become the television and diary of millennials and gen-z alike, hence it's imperative to create techniques and approaches to study their actions in this particular space. This research involved creating Document Similarity Algorithms from Corpora mined from the Twitter Developer API. Making the data unique to this platform; a methodology design involving validating data at various spectrum and selecting an appropriate threshold to classify the similarity levels were created as well as a lexicon unique to the Twitter Dataset. With an accuracy score of 84%, the Jaccard Document Similarity Algorithm was able to spot Suicidal intent from User's Tweets and with an accuracy of 93% was also able to spot non-suicidal intent. The Jaccard model seemed to be the most durable and computationally efficient for the problem and was chosen as the algorithm for detecting Suicidal Tendencies in Users' Tweets

Further, it seeks to explore patterns of change, identify factors influencing mental health outcomes, and assess whether there are improvements in the well-being of university students as the post-pandemic period unfolds. A two-year longitudinal study surveyed a sample of university students (n=300) three times between May 2020 and June 2022. Students psychological distress, generalised anxiety, flourishing and personal wellbeing were assessed at each time point
