Remarkable Lives : Maddi Faith in conversation with Jerome Carson.
The purpose of this paper is to provide a profile of Maddi Faith.In this single case study, Maddi gives a short background and the origins of her mental health issues and is then interviewed by Jerome.Maddi tells us how her problems developed in her childhood and of the journey she has been on since.Single case studies provide a single perspective. Yet are they of any less value than a commentary by an academic? On the contrary many offer unique insights into how we provide services for people with mental health problems, and of better ways to help them.Maddi raises the issue of “falling between services,” with the result that the individual concerned does not receive the help they need.The persistent stigma of mental health problems is an issue that will need to be addressed for decades if it is to be overcome. Personal witness is vital in tackling this issues. Maddi has already done a lot to address this through her work at University.The Trust the second author worked for, for many years used to have a staff “Made a Difference” award. Maddi surely deserves such an award for her own efforts to develop our understanding of the realities of mental health problems

Taking the register: the government's proposal for children not in school
In April 2019, the Department of Education released its consultation document Children not in school: proposed legislation. One proposal is that Local Authorities should be under a statutory obligation to maintain a register of all children of compulsory school age in its area. This would be complemented by a proposed new parental duty to register their child if the child is not in specified education (for example, where a child is home schooled).These proposals are a significant departure from the existing law which places no obligation on Local Authorities to maintain such a Register or on parents to register their children as being educated otherwise than at a school. This is despite s436A(1) of the Education Act 1996 requiring Authorities to ‘make arrangements to enable them to establish (so far as it is possible to do so) the identities of children in their area who are of compulsory school age but are not registered pupils at a school, and are not receiving suitable education otherwise than at a school’. The proposed register and parental duty may enable Local Authorities to better meet this obligation.In this paper, I will discuss the Government’s proposals and their implications for monitoring those children who are educated otherwise than in school. In particular, I will examine the significance of these proposals for what might be called ‘invisible children’ (eg: children who have never attended school and, consequently, are not on the Local Authority register). I will also consider the meaning of the phrase ‘suitable education’ and whether, as it currently stands, this phrase has any useful meaning at all

The purpose of the paper is to provide a profile of Robert Lawrence.Robert provides a short background to his life and is then interviewed by Jerome.Robert talks about the slow onset of his condition, his hospital admission and subsequent long journey of recovery.Case studies are of course only one person’s story. The world of someone experiencing psychosis is so different that we can only really understand it fully through the accounts of sufferers like Robert.Robert makes a number of points about how services could be improved, such as through quicker and better treatment and a commitment to promote positive mental health.Robert talks about “benefits you can live off.” He notes that some governments have not fully appreciated the reality of mental suffering and its effects on trying to live a “normal” life.Robert’s story has seen him embark on a long journey. He has now managed to study for a qualification which will hopefully bring him employment as a counsellor
Energy peer-to-peer trading in virtual microgrids in smart grids: a game-theoretic approach
Traditionally, energy consumers pay non-commodity charges (e.g. transmission, environmental and network costs) as a major component of their energy bills. With the distributed energy generation, enabling energy consumption close to producers can minimize such costs. The physically constrained energy prosumers in power networks can be logically grouped into virtual microgrids (VMGs) using communication systems. Prosumer benefits can be optimised by modelling the energy trading interactions among producers and consumers in a VMG as a Stackelberg game in which producers lead and consumers follow. Considering renewable (RES) and non-renewable energy (nRES) resources, and given that RES are unpredictable thus unschedulable, we also describe cost and utility models that include load uncertainty demands of producers. The results show that under Stackelberg equilibrium (SE), the costs incurred by a consumer for procuring either the RES or nRES are significantly reduced while the derived utility by producer is maximized. We further show that when the number of prosumers in the VMG increases, the CO2 emission cost and consequently the energy cost are minimized at the SE. Lastly, we evaluate the peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading scenario involving noncooperative energy prosumers with and without Stackelberg game. The results show that the P2P energy prosumers attain 47% higher benefits with Stackelberg game
High-isolation leaky-wave array antenna based on CRLH-metamaterial implemented on SIW with ±30o frequency beam-scanning capability at millimetre-waves
The paper presents a feasibility study on the design of a new metamaterial leaky-wave antenna (MTM-LWA) used in the construction of a 1 × 2 array which is implemented using substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) technology for millimetre-wave beamforming applications. The proposed 1 × 2 array antenna consists of two LWAs with metamaterial unit-cells etched on the top surface of the SIW. The metamaterial unit-cell, which is an E-shaped transverse slot, causes leakage loss and interrupts current flow over SIW to enhance the array’s performance. The dimensions of the LWA are 40 × 10 × 0.75 mm3. Mutual-coupling between the array elements is suppressed by incorporating a metamaterial shield (MTM-shield) between the two antennas in the array. The LWA operates over a frequency range of 55−65 GHz, which is corresponding to 16.66% fractional bandwidth. The array is shown to exhibit beam-scanning of ±30° over its operating frequency range. Radiation gain in the backward (−30°), broadside (0°), and forward (+30°) directions are 8.5 dBi, 10.1 dBi, and 9.5 dBi, respectively. The decoupling slab is shown to have minimal effect on the array’s performance in terms of impedance bandwidth and radiation specifications. The MTM-shield is shown to suppress the mutual coupling by ~25 dB and to improve the radiation gain and efficiency by ~1 dBi and ~13% on average, respectively
Industry 4.0 and autonomous transportation: the impacts on supply chain management
Within the span of three centuries of industrial revolution and through the introduction of modern technology, the environmental and socio-economic impacts are of greater importance than ever. The gradual but steady adoption of autonomous transportation in Industry 4.0 (I4.0) is now a growing research area and on identifying ways for industries to operate their functions. The implementation of autonomous guidance vehicles in all aspects of human life, from self-driving cars and unmanned aircraft, to package delivery drones and robot vacuum cleaners, is a clear indication that the future is here now. The potentials for cost reduction and profit maximisation have been realised by the involved corporations and a significant number of them is already investing heavily on the new technologies. This has become a critical factor when designing and implementing such autonomous guided vehicles (AGV) and the introduction of more eco-friendly technologies will be of vital importance for their future development. The paper aims to focus on the impacts of Autonomous Transportation that affects the logistics industry and will explain the reasons that have led to the ever-growing adoption of AGV’s but will also take into consideration the desire of humans to retain final control over their creations
Constitutional Statutes – Roots and Recognition
Sir John Laws, the originator of the principle of constitutional statutes, suggests that the protection accorded to them has its roots in the protection from implied repeal given to the European Communities Act 1972 and to constitutional fundamentals. We argue that this suggestion is more convincing with regard to the latter than it is with the former. Further, we contend that founding constitutional statutes on the protection afforded to constitutional fundamentals rather than the 1972 Act may provide a stronger basis for the principle of such statutes if the UK leaves the European Union. We then provide evidence that the idea of constitutional statutes has been accepted across the three arms of state and argue that, as a consequence, the rule of recognition may be taken to have changed to encompass the amendment to the implied repeal rule that such statutes represent
A comparison between written and digital communication and the effect on the dental appliances constructed.
Introduction: Communication as a concept should be thoroughly studied as nearly all organisational schemes include some form of communication. Hence, a lack of effective communication between the members can majorly impact the efficiency and the overall success of the organisation. This is especially true in the field of dentistry, as the methods in which dental clinicians and technicians communicate with each other can highly impact the quality of the constructed dental appliances. The aim of this literature review was to compare written and digital means of communication between dental clinicians and technicians and examine its effect on the dental appliances constructed.Materials and Methods: A literature search was performed using databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, WileyOnlineLibrary and Discover@Bolton. The keywords used included the following: communication, dentist, technician, written, digital. The searches were limited to articles in English, published from 1960 to 2018.Results: It was found that the majority of the research evidence reported that there are ongoing communication issues between dental clinicians and dental technicians when written means of communication are used. Therefore, alternative methods such as incorporating digital means of communication can enhance the quality of the interactions between the said parties which can lead to improvements in appliance construction.Conclusions: The conducted research led to the conclusion that digital means of communication such as digital cameras, oral scanners, CAD-CAM, etc. can lead to a much more accurate and thorough exchange of information between dental clinicians and dental technicians. This can in turn lead to better appliance construction
Dental anxiety in first- and final-year Indian dental students.
Objectives:The study aims to investigate dental anxiety in first- and final-year undergraduate dental students in India. Design:Questionnaire Study Setting: BDS Students in four University dental colleges in India carried-out during 2013 and 2014. Subjects materials and methods:The students (n = 614) were assessed using a pre-tested questionnaire. We estimated the level of dental anxiety by using the Modified-Dental-Anxiety-Scale (MDAS). ANCOVA and Mann-Whitney U, and Chi-squared contingency tests were employed to analyze the extensive dataset acquired. Univariate clustering analysis and principal component regression were also applied. Students had similar demographic and lifestyle patterns. Interventions:Assessments of the level of dental anxiety amongst undergraduate dental students. Main outcome measures:Mean ± SD MDAS scores for first- and final-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students were 12.96 ± 4.00 and 10.54 ± 3.41, respectively. Results:Six hundred and fourteen (n = 614) students from four dental colleges were included in this study. In total 77% were female (n = 478) and 23% were male (n = 136). The mean age of the first- and final-year students were 18.31 and 21.54 years, respectively. First-year BDS students had dental anxiety score (Mean ± SD 12.96 ± 4.00) compared to that of the final year (10.54 ± 3.41), a difference which was very highly statistically significant (p < 0.0001). Conclusions:Dental anxiety was moderately higher amongst first year BDS students over that of final-year students but it is lesser than the dental phobic threshold level
