Experiences of receiving Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) for those with complex secondary care mental health difficulties
Purpose
Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) was established as a time-limited and integrative psychotherapeutic approach (Ryle, 1995). A review was conducted to identify what is known about the service user’s experience of CAT. Following this empirical research exploring service user’s experience of CAT for those with complex mental health difficulties was completed. An executive summary of the empirical research undertaken has also been developed for service users. Method
A systematic search of HDAS, Web of Science, Cochrane and Ethos was conducted. As a result, twelve papers were selected for review. These were appraised using CASP tools and then thematically synthesised. Following this, six semi-structured interviews were completed with service users exploring their experience of CAT. Transcripts were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA).
Results The literature review and empirical research highlighted that CAT tools helped service users to gain an understanding of themselves. However, CAT also evoked negative emotions in terms of feeling scared, worried and a painful process. Service users reported gaining knowledge and skills and considered the therapeutic relationship important. The literature review identified how CAT in a group is experienced differently to one-to-one CAT and the empirical research identified how service users with complex mental health difficulties can find it difficult to make changes following CAT.
Conclusions The review and empirical research highlight the helpfulness of CAT in developing service user’s understanding of themselves and how CAT evokes strong emotions. It is suggested that therapists need to adopt a more compassionate stance in the delivery of CAT and give more attention to containment and signs of rupture to the therapeutic relationship. The empirical research identified how it can be difficult to make changes following CAT and suggests incorporating systemic working for service users with complex mental health problems
Beyond the Barriers: South Asian Women’s Experience of Accessing and Receiving Psychological Therapy in Primary Care.
The aim of this review is to explore the effectiveness and the feasibility of adapting Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) interventions for Muslim populations. To gain an insight into the degree of effectiveness that CBT has on this chosen population a review that was conducted systematically was performed. Qualitative, quantitative and mixed method papers were included for review. The results yielded 408 articles, 8 of which were eligible for inclusion. The 8 studies which fell within the scope of the inclusion criteria used cognitive or cognitive behavioural models as the basis for faith-adapted treatment studies. Results from these studies suggest that religiously adapted CBT for some Muslims can be equally as beneficial as standard CBT and psychotherapy. In most cases, CBT has been shown to reduce symptoms of distress quicker than standard treatment. There are also contributory factors such as; client-therapist matching, therapist confidence, social context and religiosity that are discussed and given due consideration within the studies

This paper proposes, develops and evaluates a novel object-tracking algorithm that outperforms start-of-the-art method in terms of its robustness. The proposed method compromises Siamese networks, Recurrent Convolutional Neural Networks (RCNNs)
and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and performs short-term target tracking in real-time. As Siamese networks only generates the current frame tracking target based on the previous frame of image information, it is less effective in handling
target’s appearance and disappearance, rapid movement, or deformation. Hence, our method a novel tracking method that integrates improved full-convolutional Siamese networks based on all-CNN, RCNN and LSTM. In order to improve the training
efficiency of the deep learning network, a strategy of segmented training based on transfer learning is proposed. For some test video sequences that background clutters, deformation, motion blur, fast motion and out of view, our method achieves the best tracking performance. Using 41 videos from the Object Tracking Benchmark (OTB) dataset and considering the area under the curve for the precision and success rate, our method outperforms the second best by 18.5% and 14.9% respectively
Nomads and Soviet Rule: Central Asia under Lenin and Stalin
The nomads of Central Asia were already well accustomed to life under the power of a distant capital when the Bolsheviks fomented revolution on the streets of Petrograd. Yet after the fall of the Tsar, the nature, ambition and potency of that power would change dramatically, ultimately resulting in the near eradication of Central Asian nomadism.
Based on extensive primary source work in Almaty, Bishkek and Moscow, Nomads and Soviet Rule charts the development of this volatile and brutal relationship and challenges the often repeated view that events followed a linear path of gradually escalating violence. Rather than the sedentarisation campaign being an inevitability born of deep-rooted Marxist hatred of the nomadic lifestyle, Thomas demonstrates the Soviet state's treatment of nomads to be far more complex and pragmatic. He shows how Soviet policy was informed by both an anti-colonial spirit and an imperialist impulse, by nationalism as well as communism, and above all by a lethal self-confidence in the Communist Party's ability to transform the lives of nomads and harness the agricultural potential of their landscape. This is the first book to look closely at the period between the revolution and the collectivisation drive, and offers fresh insight into a little-known aspect of early Soviet history. In doing so, the book offers a path to refining conceptions of the broader history and dynamics of the Soviet project in this key period
Exhibiting Forensic Archaeologically-Derived Holocaust Data Through Virtual Heritage Technologies: An Ethical Perspective
Forensic archaeology has demonstrated its ability to identify, record and analyse evidence from Holocaust landscapes. With an increased number of investigations over the last two decades, vast quantities of evidence are generated, providing unique spatial and temporal understandings of the Holocaust; which can enhance commemoration and education perspectives. This research explores the ethical complexities when using virtual heritage visualisations to represent forensic archaeologically-derived Holocaust data. Desk-Based Analysis (DBA) and non-invasive archaeological fieldwork data acquired by the author in 2013 and 2015, from investigating Sylt camp (1942-1945) (Alderney; Channel Islands) provides a case study for research. This data was presented through an online platform (‘Explore Lager Sylt’) which resourced a photorealistic virtual tour, series of abstract evidence-based 3D reconstructions and various multimedia. Guidance for developing this platform was provided by the London (2009) and Seville (2011) Charter, with research assessing their suitability for Holocaust representations. To acquire comparative data, the ‘Explore Lager Sylt’ and ‘Anne Frank Secret Annex’ platform created by the Anne Frank Fonds, was disseminated to 104 participants through focus study groups, interviews and questionnaire surveys. Employees and visitors of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) and (UK) secondary school students formed the participants to research. Using grounded theory and thematic data analysis, four key themes were identified (accountability, communication, education and presentation), underpinning dissemination considerations. This research highlights that many benefits stem from learning about the Holocaust from a forensic archaeological perspective, emphasising the importance of incorporating historical and contemporary evidence within education. By demonstrating how ethical complexities can be addressed, this research establishes a framework for future archaeological representations of the Holocaust
Annulus eccentricity optimisation of a phase-change material (PCM) horizontal double-pipe thermal energy store
The application of phase-change materials (PCMs) has received significant interest for use in thermal energy storage
(TES) systems that can adjust the mismatch between the energy availability and demand. In the building
sector, for example, PCMs can be used to reduce air-conditioning energy consumption by increasing the thermal
capacity of the walls. However, as promising this technology may be, the poor thermal conductivity of PCMs has
acted as a barrier to its commercialization, with many heat-transfer enhancement solutions proposed in the literature,
such as microencapsulation or metal foam inserts, being either too costly and/or complex. The present study
focuses on a low-cost and highly practical solution, in which natural-convective heat transfer is enhanced by placing
the PCM in an eccentric annulus within a horizontal double-pipe TES heat exchanger. This paper presents an
annulus-eccentricity optimisation study, whereby the optimal radial and tangential eccentricities are determined
to minimize the charging time of a PCM thermal energy store. The storage performance of several geometrical
configurations is predicted using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on the enthalpy-porosity
formulation. The optimal geometrical configuration is then determined with response surface methods. The horizontal
double-pipe heat exchanger studied considered here is an annulus filled with N-eicosane as the PCM for
initial studies. In presence of N-eicosane, for the concentric configuration (which is the baseline case), the charging
is completed at Fo=0.64, while the charging of optimum eccentric geometries with the quickest and slowest
charging is completed at Fo=0.09 and Fo=2.31, respectively. In addition, an investigation on the discharging
performance of the studied configurations with N-eicosane shows the quickest discharge occurs with the concentric
annulus case at Fo=0.99, while the discharge time of the proposed optimum annuli is about three times this
value. In other words, the proposed optimum geometry with the quickest charging time charges ~7.1 times faster
but also discharges ~3 times slower, which is ideal for a TES, especially when used as passive thermal storage
systems in nearly zero-emission buildings. Complementary studies demonstrate that the proposed optimum configuration
improves the TES performance also when employing other PCM types as well as various shell-to-tube
diameter ratio

The E-Design Assessment Tool: an evidence-informed approach towards a consistent terminology for quantifying online distance learning activities
Online distance learning (ODL) continues to expand rapidly, despite persistent concerns that student experience is poorer and retention lower than for face-to-face courses. Various factors affect ODL quality, but the impact of recommended learning activities, such as student interaction activities and those involving feed-back, have proven difficult to assess because of challenges in definition and mea-surement. Although learning design frameworks and learning analytics have been used to evaluate learning designs, their use is hampered by this lack of an agreed terminology. This study addresses these challenges by initially identifying key ODL activities that are associated with higher quality learning designs. The learn-ing activity terminology was tested using independent raters, who categorised the learning activities in four ODL courses as ‘interaction’, ‘feedback’ or ‘other’, with inter-rater reliability near or above recommended levels. Whilst challenges remain for consistent categorisation, the analysis suggests that increased clarity in the learning activity will aid categorisation. As a result of this analysis, the E-Design Assessment Tool (eDAT) has been developed to incorporate this key terminology and enable improved quantification of learning designs. This can be used with learning analytics, particularly retention and attainment data, thus providing an effective feedback loop on the learning design
