    This chapter considers some of the tensions present in Mukhamet Shayakhmetov’s The Silent Steppe: The Memoir of a Nomad under Stalin, which relates the author’s adolescent experiences of collectivization and repression in early Soviet Kazakhstan. The chapter argues that Shayakhmetov exhibits the same ambivalence about the Soviet project as is common in contemporary Kazakhstan, with a representation of the early USSR as both an imperial space and a postcolonial space

    Investigation of a Cascaded H-bridge Photovoltaic Inverter under non-Uniform Insolation Conditions by Hardware-in-the-Loop Test

    Abstract- In this paper, the cascaded H-bridge (CHB) multilevel inverter is employed as a grid connected inverter. This kind of inverter has interesting features compared to conventional inverters, including better efficiency, lower THD, lower common mode current injection, and better waveform quality. Using a series connection of H-bridge cells in this topology, a high modularity is achieved and a stepwise voltage waveform is synthesized at the ac side, leading to lower filter size and complexity. This topology processes the electric power in one stage and does not need any step-up voltage transformer for grid connection. The dynamic performance of control system is studied through simulations and is compared with the conventional approach. In addition, a new voltage estimation approach is proposed to reduce the number of voltage sensors compared to existing methods. The simulation results are presented for a 1.5 kW grid connected 7-level CHB inverter and then the hardware-in-the-loop implementation of the CHB inverter is presented to verify the performance of control system.     Quantification is more than counting: actions required to accurately quantify and report isolated marine microplastics

    Research on marine microplastics continues to increase in popularity, with a large number of studies being published every year. However, with this plethora of research comes the need for a standardised approach to quantification and analysis procedures in order to produce comparative assessments. Using data collected from neuston nets in 2016, parameters for quantifying microplastics were compared. Surface area was the most accurate parameter to describe plastic size and should be used to describe plastic quantity (per km2 or m3), alongside abundance. Of the two most commonly used methods for calculating plastic concentration (flowmeter and ship’s log), ship’s log provided consistently smaller abundances, with the exception of one sample, calling for a standardisation in the techniques and measurements used to quantify floating microplastics

    “Total Station” was developed at Treblinka during an IC-ACCESS project workshop. It utilizes video and split-screen editing to create a moving collage where the artist (Branthwaite) controls the flow of images pertaining to the site. In this case, the notion of investigating and discovering a site is alluded to by airborne LiDAR data that pans from top to bottom as a backdrop, offering an aerial and topographic view of the region in which Treblinka is located. This work, along with several others developed by Branthwaite, highlights the paradoxical juxtaposition of beauty and horror at Holocaust sites. Many camps and killing sites were situated within tranquil, remote fields and forests that ultimately became scarred by the events that took place therein. Whilst as Pollefeyt (2013:10) argues ‘in the first place the Holocaust was a human catastrophe, an evil committed against humanity, not against nature’, for the crimes to be perpetrated, the landscape had to be changed. Nature also became a coincidental, yet passive witness to human acts of violence; both a metaphorical and physical sense. Vegetation, for example, may become a ‘living memorial’ or an indicator of the presence of buried remains in a forensic sense (Malczynski 2010: 27-38).     Molecular Characterisation and Antimicrobial Activities of Novel Substituted Ferrocenyl Chalcone Derivatives

    The increasing issues of drug-resistant bacteria has quickly become a global concern as infections spread from healthcare settings to the wider community. The rapid spread of these infections is partly facilitated by a decrease in the development of new drugs. Because of their antimicrobial properties, ferrocenyl chalcones, which are organometallic chalcone derivatives, have gained attention from researchers. Early classes of ferrocenyl chalcones were reportedly cytotoxic, which encouraged the need to develop next-generation ferrocenyl chalcone compounds that are less toxic. One-to-one dilutions of stock ferrocenyl chalcone solution and MHB, resulting in the formation of small, brown particles, was suggested to arise from iron ion chelation of casein hydrolysate, a component of MHB. After solubilisation in DMSO, each of the iodine-containing ferrocenyl chalcone compounds, changed from deep red to dark brown. There was no evidence that iodine was displaced when diethyl ether was used. Using 2-fold broth microdilution, results demonstrated that five of the ten methylated ferrocenyl chalcones, possessed greater antimicrobial activity against resistant and non-resistant Gram-positive organisms than Gram-negative organisms. These compounds contain increasing alkyl chain lengths from pentyl to decyl on ring ‘B’ of the compounds. The results of MTT assays of Gram-positive bacteria indicated that there were no viable cells, where the mean (± SD) percentage of actively respiring cells were observed. SEM images of bacterial cells, which were treated with an active ferrocenyl chalcone, exhibited significant cell membrane damage as ultrastructurally observed. Key findings of this research indicate that further investigations into these compounds are required so that the inhibition of biofilm formation and the cytotoxicity towards mammalian cells are clearly defined. Additionally, the results advance the possibility that these newly developed ferrocenyl chalcone compounds could be important antimicrobial agents in the treatment of infections from clinically resistant bacteria in an environment where current treatments are failing

    Screening and discussion of three new screen-based artworks by Michael Branthwaite The event featured three new video-based artworks created during and in response to a roaming artistic residency with the iC-ACCESS research team. These works have been selected as they feature the three sites where iC-ACCESS success is being celebrated, Westerbork, Treblinka and Lety. Developed alongside a plethora of cross-disciplinary research the artworks all address issues related to the sites that have been highlighted or addressed throughout the project. The artworks address a range of thematics including the afterlife of site, performing archaeology and material culture as witness. The event featured introductions from Eva Kovacs (Vienna Wiesenthal Institute), Professor Rob van der Laarse (Accessing Campscapes Project Lead, University of Amsterdam) followed by the screening of each artwork followed by a brief discussion session. The event will draw to close with a final round of open questions concluded by Csaba Szilagyi ( Open Society Archives

    Self-Healing Control to improve reliability for the Smart Grid Distribution System

    Abstract A Smart Grid is a modernised future electric power network that uses various modern technologies, intelligence and approaches in order to provide sustainable, reliable and secure renewable and distributed energy resources. In the contrary, the emergence of time-variant and non-deterministic renewable and distributed energy resources are continuously causing new challenges to the Smart Grid across the world. Optimal control and efficient operation of renewable & distributed energy resources are one of the greatest challenges that are spontaneously leading the Smart Grid to an unstable state from its steady-state. Frequent and large instability results brown-out of the grid equipment which leads plant failure as well as power outage of the grid. Thus, the overall reliability of the power system reduces. Consequently, this thesis focuses on the factors that affect the reliability of the Smart Grid particularly its Distribution System. It has been identified through a literature research that voltage instability is one of the main reasons to brown-out of grid equipment and caused power outage hence reduced reliability of the grid. It has also been identified through research that voltage instability is the direct result of supply-demand unbalance. For example, Photovoltaic solar panel is historically at maximum power generation mode while demand of the system is below the average magnitudes. This results in surplus power to supply to the grid network and causes overvoltage. In addition to Photovoltaic, recently emerged Hybrid Electric Vehicle and small-scale Electric Energy Storage charge and discharge across the consumer terminals. These introduce additional supply-demand unbalances hence voltage instability due to State-of-Charge and Depth-of-Discharge of such distributed energy resources. Consequently, the control and operation of Smart Grid Distribution System are becoming critical day by day. This thesis, therefore, developed a Self-Healing Control Algorithm to improve reliability of a proposed Smart Grid Distribution System. Self-Healing Control is developed as a form of intelligent control technique by integrating modern robust control theory (i.e.: state-variable approach) together with various computer-based artificial intelligence approaches (i.e.: Genetic Algorithm and Bayesian Probability). The Self-Healing Control was implemented to a secondary distribution system in order to improve reliability for mitigating impact of integration of renewable and distributed energy resources focusing voltage instability due to supply-demand unbalance. Two experiments were carried out and results were presented by implementing Self-Healing Control Algorithm in chapter-5. It was also showed in chapter-5 that supply-demand balance was achieved while node voltages remain steady. The experiments and results were simulated and critically analysed in MATLAB Simulink and evaluated by identifying the contribution to knowledge for Ph.D

    Young People’s Experiences of having a sibling admitted to a Child & Adolescent Mental Health inpatient unit

    Paper one is a literature review of eight published studies. It reviews research on the experiences of young people who have a sibling experiencing mental health difficulties. The findings identified that young people would like more information on their sibling’s difficulties and highlighted the lack of research with this population. This is despite clinicians and researchers identifying a need to better understand young people’s experiences. Furthermore, generalisability of the findings was often limited by the fact that data was gathered from parents and not the young people directly. Paper two is an empirical study using the qualitative methodological approach, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. It explored the experiences of young people who had a sibling admitted to a mental health inpatient unit. 5 brothers of adolescent females were interviewed. Interviews were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Findings suggest young people experience changes in their family relationships as a result but have trouble expressing their own emotions and may use avoidance strategies to manage this. They also worry about not being able to support their sister enough and what their future may look like with mental health difficulties. Paper three is an executive summary. This was written as an accessible document for clinicians working in Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services to help disseminate the findings from the empirical study.
