Segmenting the urban and rural populations of southern Alberta for improved understanding of policy preferences for water reallocation
Agriculture competes for access to water with other sectors and the environment; policymakers are being challenged to balance these competing demands. In the face of limited supplies, water reallocation among users is frequently advanced as a solution. However, this option is politically charged, and implementation success is strongly influenced by stakeholders’ values. This research identifies the water-related values of urban and rural residents in southern Alberta, Canada, and determines how their values influence the acceptability of water reallocation policies. Cluster analysis revealed three discrete clusters of respondents among rural and urban residents not involved in irrigation: pro-environmental, utilitarian, and undecided. Differences and similarities among the three clusters are explored, revealing widespread opinions on water transfers between sectors and the conditions under which they should take place.

The changing landscape of legal practice – some of the challenges ahead
In recent years, there has been a rapid growth in the number of multinational law firms. These firms have offices in various jurisdictions worldwide. At the same time, we have seen a growth in the outsourcing of certain legal work to countries, such as India and SE Asia. This is indicative of the globalisation of law. However, it raises problems, especially in terms of the potential for conflicts of interest. This article looks at these developments in light of existing professional practice rules as they apply in Australia as well as other selected jurisdictions. The author concludes that there is a need for a more international regulatory framework in order to respond to these changes.
3D Reconstruction modelling and analysis of in situ root architecture
Our results show that root biomass/volume increases with time. This trend is true irrespective of the number of images used for 3D reconstruction. The increase in root volume is approximately linear with time for plants is in the early stage of growth. It is not very clear what will be the optimal number of images to use in 3D reconstruction and modelling. Less number of images require less acquisition time and less processing time, which may be important for high throughput systems. By visual inspection it can be said that the 3D reconstruction becomes more accurate and detailed with increasing number of images. We empirically verify that the volume of reconstruction monotonically decreases increasing number of images from different viewpoints. This is due to erroneous voxels being carved out when information from more images are being added to 3D reconstruction.
Tangible interaction techniques to support asynchronous collaboration
Industrial uses of Augmented Reality (AR) are growing, however their uses are consistently fashioned with an emphasis on consumption, delivering additional information to the worker to assist them in the completion of their job. A promising alternative is to allow user data creation during the actual process by the worker performing their duties. This not only allows spatially located annotations to be produced, it also allows an AR scene to be developed in-situ and in real-time. Tangible markers offer a physical interface while also creating physical containers to allow for fluent interactions. This form factor allows both attached and detached annotations, whilst allowing the creation of an AR scene during the process. This annotated scene will allow asynchronous collaboration to be conducted between multiple stakeholders, both locally and remotely. In this paper we discuss our reasoning behind such an approach, and present the current work on our prototype created to test and validate our proposition.
Affect and the lifeworld : conceptualising surviving and thriving in the human service professions
The advent of post-industrialism in western societies saw social theorists pay greater attention to the blurring of traditional work and life conceptual categories and the growing role of service professions. Further, much of the theorisation around the human service professions has focussed on occupational stress and professional burnout. This focus on the challenges to worker health has limited considerations of how human service professionals can thrive, and not just survive, in demanding employment contexts. In response, the paper considers the ‘lifeworld’ as a conceptual resource that can encourage new ways of thinking about the work of human service professionals, as well as reworks this resource using the concept of affect to expand consideration of the interconnected, inter-subjective, bodily and emotive nature of human service work. The paper concludes by presenting a heuristic tool that can make these concepts more accessible to professional discourses and can facilitate their use within collaborative research with the human service professions.
