A thread in the transnational warp. Ana Piacenza/Nita Nahuel’s unpatriotic trajectory between Argentina and Spain

    No full text
This paper explores the political itinerary of Ana Piacenza –a militant anarchist Argentinean Lawyer– who actively participated in the organisation of both the local and international anarchist movements. She was a member of the «Anarco Comunista Argentina Federación» (FACA) and, in 1936, she travelled to Spain with other members in order to participate in the Revolution and Civil War. Once there –under the name Nita Nahuel– she joined the «Agrupación Mujeres Libres» organisation, worked in the CNT-FAI Foreign Propaganda Office, and was a member of the editorial staff of Tierra y Libertad newspaper. Before the defeat, she returned to Argentina and continued linked to the local anarchist movement, despite repression and jail. Combining a biographical method and a gender perspective, we analyse a corpus of documents comprising magazines and newspapers published both in Spain and Argentina; also correspondence biographical and autobiographical accounts of Piacenza’s activity on both sides of the Atlantic. Why is it interesting to study her itinerary? Trajectories such as Piacenza’s allow us to investigate and reveal pluralities, transnational networks of experiences that feedback on both sides of the ocean though not as a reflection of the others. Woven wefts as anarchist militants and as women, with the motivations and obstacles that this entails. On the one hand, transnational struggles present differential characteristics when we question them from a gender perspective. Militancy for women, in general, presents several limitations that are emphasized by the particularities of travelling, especially for those who are mothers. On the other hand, the different experiences of those women contributed to the formation of an anarchist women’s movement, with some peculiarities that distance them from other groups working to change the conditions of exploitation for their gender

How to reinforce governance in water-tourism nexus research? Updating the Hydrosocial Cycle to loop into stakeholders' roles, interactions, and power dynamics

    Get PDF
Over the years, a substantial body of knowledge has emerged to analyse the water–tourism nexus, shifting from setting agendas to problem-solving approaches, while highlighting the importance of involving stakeholders in effective governance. In this respect, the Hydrosocial Cycle approach has demonstrated its effectiveness in assessing the human-nature dimension of water resources by examining the roles and narratives of stakeholders, as well as the asymmetrical power dynamics influencing decision-making processes. This study establishes a framework aimed at enhancing governance in hydrosocial research related to the intersection of water and tourism by exploring stakeholders' interactions across five key dimensions: relevance, representativeness, recognition, performance, and collaboration. Additionally, it articulates each dimension using a triple-loop factor scheme that considers stakeholders' knowledge (to be), actions (to do), and relationships (to share). This framework was implemented in two Mediterranean coastal hotspots, Benidorm (Spain) and Rimini (Italy), which exemplify complex water management contexts marked by competing water needs. Data were gathered through questionnaires distributed to key stakeholders, such as municipalities, regional authorities, water suppliers, irrigation districts, and tourism associations. Our findings illustrate that within the water-tourism nexus, governance tends to favour the water component over the tourism dimension, as evidenced by water stakeholders' leadership roles, player status, and their greater relevance and recognition in terms of their responsibilities and actions. Moreover, although some stakeholders lack awareness of others' roles within the system, no stakeholder was seen as redundant, which suggests potential for fostering engagement by pinpointing most influential stakeholders and reassessing their positions in power-imbalanced contexts. The proposed framework introduces a straightforward, flexible, and easily replicable strategy for dealing with context-dependent issues and challenges, such as the water-tourism nexus, and can enhance the effectiveness of broader participatory tools, such as semi-structured interviews and workshops, improving its applicability in a range of governance environments. The authors thank the European Commission, the Dutch Research Council, the State Investigation Agency (Spanish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation) and the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research for funding in the frame of the collaborative international consortium (SIMTWIST) financed under the 2018 Joint Call of the WaterWorks 2017 ERA-NET Cofund. Validation of the computerised battery for neuropsychological evaluation of children (BENCI) in a Cuban sample

    No full text
The aim of this research was to analyse the reliability and validity of the Computerised Battery for Neuropsychological Evaluation of Children (BENCI) in a Cuban population of children and adolescents. The study involved 1714 Cuban students between the ages of 6 and 18 who were divided into three groups according to their level of education (Elementary: 6–11 years old; High School: 12–14 years old; and Pre-University: 15–18 years old). All participants were evaluated using the BENCI with some also undergoing additional neuropsychological testing. The BENCI evaluates the following cognitive domains: processing speed, visuomotor coordination, attention, memory, language, and executive functions. The results showed that the BENCI has good test–retest reliability indices and high internal consistency values in Reasoning, Reaction Time, and Working Memory. In terms of validity, the data revealed significant correlations between the BENCI tests and other neuropsychological tests assessing similar cognitive functions. The BENCI also has discriminative validity, as it was found that performance on the tests varies according to the level of education of those being evaluated. In terms of construct validity, confirmatory factor analysis showed that the fit indices for the executive functions dimension of the BENCI are adequate. The data show that the BENCI is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing neurodevelopment in Cuban children and adolescents. Since this is the first neuropsychological test of its kind to be validated in the Cuban population, this finding is of particular importance. The study is part of a cooperation project funded by the Andalusian Agency for International Development Cooperation entitled “Evaluation of Neurodevelopment in Cuban Children aged 6–18 years using the BENCI Computerized Battery for Neuropsychological Evaluation of Children” (Rf. 2020 U1006) with the University of Granada (Spain) and the University of Cienfuegos “Carlos Rafael Rodriguez” (Cuba)

The Boosted Double-proximal Subgradient Algorithm for nonconvex optimization

    Get PDF
In this paper we introduce the Boosted Double-proximal Subgradient Algorithm (BDSA), a novel splitting algorithm designed to address general structured nonsmooth and nonconvex mathematical programs expressed as sums and differences of composite functions. BDSA exploits the combined nature of subgradients from the data and proximal steps, and integrates a linesearch procedure to enhance its performance. While BDSA encompasses existing schemes proposed in the literature, it extends its applicability to more diverse problem domains. We establish the convergence of BDSA under the Kurdyka–Łojasiewicz property and provide an analysis of its convergence rate. To evaluate the effectiveness of BDSA, we introduce two novel test functions with an abundance of critical points. We conduct comparative evaluations, including algorithms with inertial terms, that illustrate its ability to effectively escape non-optimal critical points. Additionally, we present two practical applications of BDSA for testing its efficacy, namely, a constrained minimum-sum-of-squares clustering problem and a nonconvex generalization of Heron’s problem.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. Ivermectin causes adverse effects on the metabolic rate and thermoregulatory capacity of Dung beetles

    No full text
Ivermectin (IVM), a commonly used endectocide in livestock, has been shown to produce adverse effects in dung beetle ecology, physiology, reproduction, and even their ecosystem services. However, the ever-growing ecological importance of thermoregulation and its associated metabolic demand in dung beetles has not received as much focus regarding the effects of this drug. Here, we evaluated experimentally the effects caused by IVM in the metabolic rate and thermoregulation of Ateuchetus cicatricosus (Lucas, 1846), using a standardized ecotoxicity test based on thermolimit respirometry combined with infrared thermography (TLR-IR). The total capacity of excess heat regulation (iTR) and the caloric metabolic rate (MR) gave the most sensitive responses to IVM ingestion. The inhibition concentration at 50% (IC50), a relevant toxicity threshold used to calculate the concentration of IVM that provokes a response half way among the inhibition responses obtained showed that iTR was impacted at 0.39 µg g–1, while the MR was compromised at 0.24 µg g–1. Applying a TLR-IR procedure has not only revealed how the MR of active thermoregulators is crucial for their adaptation in warm and competitive environments, but also shown the potential of this method to be applied in real-world scenarios like cattle-farming regions, where the need to assess the direct impact of endectocides like IVM is vital to update and enhance regulation guidelines of these pharmaceuticals.Project AICO/2020/031 (Generalitat Valenciana).
