    Spatio-temporal distribution of Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms through remote sensing in La Turbina lagoon, Cuba

    La detección temprana de especies de plantas exóticas invasoras es fundamental para la formulación de estrategias de gestión y mitigación. Se propone evaluar la distribución espacio-temporal de Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms, en laguna La Turbina, empleando imágenes satelitales Sentinel-2 (periodo 2021-2023). Las bandas espectrales de las regiones del visible, borde rojo, infrarrojo cercano e infrarrojo de onda corta, se emplearon como datos de entrada de tres algoritmos de aprendizaje automático durante el proceso de clasificación. Se analizó la relación de la cobertura de la planta con la temperatura del aire y las precipitaciones. El modelo donde se combinan las bandas espectrales y los índices espectrales seleccionados, mediante el método de eliminación recursiva Random Forest, fue el más eficiente en la detección de E. crassipes. Los meses de menor cobertura de E. crassipes fueron diciembre 2022, enero y marzo 2023, debido a las acciones de limpieza mecanizada. E. crassipes se concentró en el Noreste y Suroeste de la laguna, como macrófita emergente. La dirección del viento y la intervención humana, determinaron la distribución espacio-temporal de la planta. Se recomienda realizar confinamientos de E. crassipes, en su condición de macrófita flotante, en las zonas más profundas de La Turbina.The early detection of invasive exotic plant species is essential for planning management and mitigation strategies. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the spatio-temporal distribution of Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms, in La Turbina lagoon, using Sentinel-2 satellite images (period 2021-2023). The spectral bands of the visible, red edge, near infrared and shortwave infrared regions were used as input data in three machine learning algorithms during the classification process. The relationship between plant coverage and air temperature and precipitation have been analyzed. The model combining spectral bands and the selected spectral indices using the Random Forest recursive elimination method was the most efficient in the detection of E. crassipes. The months with the least coverage of E. crassipes were December 2022, January and March 2023, due to mechanized cleaning actions. E. crassipes is concentrated in the Northeast and Southwest of the lagoon, as an emerging macrophyte. The direction of the wind and human intervention has determined the spatio-temporal distribution of this plant. Based on these results, it is recommended to confine E. crassipes, in its condition as a floating macrophyte, to the deepest areas of La Turbina

    Optimizing IoT Video Data: Dimensionality Reduction for Efficient Deep Learning on Edge Computing

    The rapid loss of biodiversity significantly impacts birds’ environments and behaviors, highlighting the importance of analyzing bird behavior for ecological insights. With the growing adoption of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms in the Internet of Things (IoT) domain, edge computing has become essential to ensure data privacy and enable real-time predictions by processing high-dimensional data, such as video streams, efficiently. This paper introduces a set of dimensionality reduction techniques tailored for video sequences based on cutting-edge methods for this data representation. These methods drastically compress video data, reducing bandwidth and storage requirements while enabling the creation of compact ML models with faster inference speeds. Comprehensive experiments on bird behavior classification in rural environments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques. The experiments incorporate state-of-the-art deep learning techniques, including pre-trained video vision models, Autoencoders, and single-frame feature extraction. These methods demonstrated superior performance to the baseline, achieving up to a 6000-fold reduction in data size while reaching a classification accuracy of 60.7% on the Visual WetlandBirds Dataset and obtaining state-of-the-art performance on this dataset.     The grapevine ABC transporter B family member 15 is a trans-resveratrol transporter out of grapevine cells

    Stilbenes, particularly trans-resveratrol, play a highly relevant defense role in grapevines as phytoalexin is induced in response to stress. Metabolism and transport of stilbenes can be conveniently investigated in grapevine cell culture since large amounts of trans-resveratrol are accumulated in the extracellular medium upon treatment with the elicitor methylated cyclodextrin, either alone or combined with methyl jasmonate. A proteomic approach on grapevine cell membrane fractions was performed to find trans-resveratrol transporter candidates. The candidate VvABCB15 was functionally characterized. Its stable expression in both yeast and Silybum marianum cells’ heterologous systems led to increased trans-resveratrol transport in these hosts. Transient expression in Vitis cells showed an enhanced absorbent- or elicitor-assisted accumulation of extracellular trans-resveratrol in VvABCB15-expressing or VvGSTU10/VvABCB15-co-expressing cell suspension cultures. Experiments of transient expression in Vitis cell suspensions using light-switchable stilbene synthase (pHYH::VvSTS3) and VvABCB15 further confirmed the candidate’s role as a trans-resveratrol transporter. VvABCB15-YFP fusion proteins in Nicotiana leaf showed localization in the plasma membrane, consistent with a functional role in trans-resveratrol transport.     (Post)Feminist Genealogies in Kate Muir’s Suffragette City ad Lisa Evans’ Old Baggage

    This article explores Kate Muir’s Suffragette City and Lisa Evans’ Old Baggage didactic potential based on the interactions between women that belong to different (feminist) generations taking place in both novels. Suffragette City reproduces the conversations and encounters between the ghost of a Scottish suffragette fighting for her enfranchisement in the twentieth century, and her great-great-granddaughter living in New York at the beginning of the following century. Old Baggage also deploys the figure of the suffragette, but in this case, embodied by a Londoner in her fifties who has just been granted the right to vote, and a group of newly enfranchised girls. I argue that the intergenerational exchanges between an older suffragette and younger female characters metaphorically facilitate a dialogue between feminism and postfeminism illuminating the tensions and convergences between them. My reading of these novels is supported by what Stéphanie Genz calls the “genealogical approach” (2021) to postfeminism, which does not present both movements as dichotomous but acknowledges that different feminist moments should be understood as interrelated and not superseding each other in apparently distinctive “waves.” My ultimate aim is to present Suffragette City and Old Baggage as didactic texts which reflect on what I refer to as (post)feminist debates to vindicate the pertinence of feminism in a so-called postfeminist context.MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and ERDF A way of making Europe (PID2021-122249NB-I00)

    Multimodal Critique of the Capitalist Model in Armin Greder's Picture Books

    Este artículo analiza la obra de Armin Greder a través de once libros-álbumes, destacando su enfoque multimodal para criticar el modelo capitalista. Se exploran temas complejos como la migración, la injusticia económica y la violencia, integrando elementos discursivos (texto, imagen y secuencia) que revelan la deshumanización neoliberal. La metodología de análisis de contenido se centra en el estudio discursivo multimodal a partir de los elementos literarios, artísticos y con especial atención a los semióticos centrados en las relaciones interactivas de los personajes representados con quien lee. Los resultados del corpus seleccionado muestra que los libros de Greder, dirigidos a un público adulto e infantil, invitan a reflexionar sobre las desigualdades sociales y la urgencia de un cambio estructural hacia un futuro más justo y sostenible.This article analyzes the work of Armin Greder through eleven picture books, highlighting his multimodal approach to critiquing the capitalist model. Complex themes such as migration, economic injustice, and violence are explored, integrating discursive elements (text, image, and sequence) that reveal neoliberal dehumanization. The content analysis methodology centers on the multimodal study of discourse, incorporating literary, artistic, and particularly semiotic elements, with a focus on the interactive relationships between the depicted characters and the reader. The analysis of the selected corpus reveals that Greder’s books, aimed at both adult and child audiences, invite reflection on social inequalities and the urgent need for structural change towards a more just and sustainable future
