This paper analyses the museum management of the Dámaso Navarro Archaeological and Ethnological Museum in Petrer (Alicante), intending to evaluate the institution’s role in society. The study also examines whether the museum has fulfilled its legally established functions under Article 68 of Law 4/1998 on Valencian Cultural Heritage. To this end, the museum’s annual management reports, its website, and relevant bibliographic sources have been carefully reviewed to define the different sections. These sections address how the museum has operated in its various areas of activity and have enabled an evaluation of the results concerning the functions mandated by law, leading to a series of general conclusions based on the analysis. This has enabled an evaluation of the institution’s role within the community of Petrer and the contributions and benefits this study offers for the analysis and improvement of local museum management

Autolycus’ Game: Game-Based Learning in Natural Environments for Meaningful Physical Education

    No full text
Within the context of pedagogical renewal in Physical Education, Game-Based Learning (GBL) has emerged as a pedagogical model that can foster students’ motivation and engagement. This study explored university learners’ perceptions of a playful activity in a natural environment, entitled Autolycus’ Game, and its perceived contributions to their holistic development. A total of 114 undergraduate students enrolled in Early Childhood and Primary Education degrees participated in a two-hour session designed as a Breakout EDU in a university park. After the experience, their perceptions were collected through an online semi-structured questionnaire and analysed using qualitative coding techniques in Atlas.ti. Findings indicated that participants perceived Autolycus’ Game as motivating, creativity-enhancing, and supportive of social interaction and cooperative work. Most participants highlighted that this methodology helped them strengthen social and communication skills, while also valuing the use of the natural environment as a didactic resource. At the same time, participants identified areas for improvement—such as repetitive tasks, uneven difficulty across challenges, and limited supervision—that may reduce engagement if not carefully planned. Overall, participants described Autolycus’ Game as a valuable pedagogical strategy that may enrich learning experiences in Physical Education and support socio-emotional and motor competences, although the findings should be interpreted in light of the study’s limitations (single-institution sample, self-reported data, intact class groups taught by the researchers). Future work could examine outdoor Breakout EDU with mixed-methods and longitudinal designs to assess motivational processes and learning outcomes over time

    No full text

Productive intensification and craft specialization: the role of women in Argaric textile production

    No full text
This paper analyses the importance of textile production in Argaric society and shows how some of the main work processes involved –thread production, weaving, or sewing– were carried out primarily by women in the domestic sphere. This connection is based on a number of archaeological indicators. On the one hand, extra-masticatory dental wear, increasingly documented in the cases of inhumed Argaric women, suggests the teeth-use in textile activities. On the other hand, the close association of awls and/or knives with Argaric women is noticeable in funerary practices. These indicators are compared with the extensive evidence provided by textile tools found in domestic contexts, as well as with textile remains recovered from funerary contexts. Textile activity is therefore proposed as a gendered role, likely assigned to many women from childhood, highlighting their significant contribution not only to domestic maintenance tasks, but especially to the production of textiles with considerable social and economic value. Thus, in addition to meeting the needs of their household or lineage, this activity may also have served as a means of increasing their wealth. An integrative approach to correlate morphological variability and taxonomic diversity in Cheilosia mutabilis (Fallén), Cheilosia urbana (Meigen) and their allies (Diptera: Syrphidae) from a biodiversity hotspot

    No full text
Exceeding half a thousand species worldwide, Cheilosia Meigen, 1822 is the largest genus of Syrphidae (hoverflies) in the Iberian Peninsula, which, in turn, is a biodiversity hotspot in Europe. Apart from its remarkable alpha diversity, Cheilosia includes many species with high levels of morphological variability, leading to a complex taxonomy. The rather-inconspicuous, small-sized Cheilosia mutabilis (Fallén, 1817) and Cheilosia urbana (Meigen, 1822) are a good example of this complexity and an integrated approach (morphology + DNA) was here followed to assess their morphological variability in Iberian populations. After fieldwork in several Spanish localities and revision of entomological collections, 230+ specimens were examined of four taxa, including a species new to science with distinctive morphology. The new species originates mainly from Sierra Nevada (Granada, southern Spain) and is allied with C. urbana. A detailed new species description is provided with drawings of the male genitalia and an account of morphological variation. The morphological variability of C. mutabilis and C. urbana were assessed against molecular data. As a result, a list of variable characters for each species was produced. In addition, Cheilosia psilophthalma Becker, 1894 was reported for the first time from the Iberian Peninsula. DNA of all four taxa was studied based on the 5’ end of the cytochrome c oxydase subunit I gene (COI-5’), with sequences produced from Iberian material of three species, to explore species concepts and phylogenetic relationships. This paper represents a substantial advance in the taxonomy and systematics of the variable C. mutabilis and C. urbana, but also prompts the need of further investigations in a wider geographic frame to explore the entire morphological and genetic variability of these species.Financial support was provided by the ‘Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades’ (Spain) (Project PGC2018-095851-A-C65 and PRE2019-087508 grant awarded to Pablo Aguado Aranda), the European Union (Project C04.I01.P01.02.05 and Subproject TEC00006094). Rewriting Statues, Battling Amnesia: Frances Presley’s Poetic Commemoration of Historical Women in “Female Figures”

    No full text
In her collection of poems Lines of Sight (2009), the British poet Frances Presley features a section called “Female Figures,” which draws our attention to the scarcity of female monuments in urban spaces, an issue that has become increasingly relevant over the past decade in different parts of the world (Weston 2021; Rozas-Krause and Shanken 2024). As a way to counterbalance this invisibility, the author responds to the statues of three prominent historical women: Julian of Norwich, Queen Anne, and Margaret Thatcher. The manner in which Presley addresses these statues reveals the paradoxical yet inextricable connection that exists between remembering and forgetting, between the act of public commemoration and the development of collective amnesia. Drawing on the insights provided by authors such as James E. Young (1993), John R. Gillis (1994), Guy Rotella (2004), and Sara Gensburger and Jenny Wüstenberg (2023), among others, this chapter examines how Presley’s poetry depicts a view of memory sites as malleable entities that are subject to the constant reinterpretations of viewers. On the one hand, the fact that Presley depicts the statues of Queen Anne and Julian of Norwich as fading into their own spatial background may be interpreted as a visual indication that the women behind these monuments have fallen into collective oblivion. Even though the poet endows these statues with agency because it is through their eyes that the reader bears witness to the space that they inhabit, this only serves to further emphasize their position as viewers, but never as viewed, and thus remembered, objects. By contrast, the way Presley confronts Margaret Thatcher’s statues and visually illustrates the “de-commemoration” (Gensburger and Wüstenberg 2023) of the politician in her poem—affecting the marble sculpture that is located at Guildhall Art Gallery and which was decapitated in 2002—suggests not only that Thatcher remains significantly present in the British national memory, but that space is capable of embodying conflicting discourses. Ultimately, in commemorating these statues, Presley demonstrates the value of her poetry as a legitimate memory site, one that effectively represents the unfixed nature of space and collective memory. This study was funded by the grant ACIF-2020/196, from the Spanish Conselleria d’Innovació, Universitats, Ciència i Societat Digital, and the European Social Fund

On the Regularization of the Supremum Function in the Bidual Space

    No full text
Conditions allowing the interchange between the supremum and biconjugation in the bidual space are provided. We establish alternative characterizations which involve both approximate and exact subdifferential calculus rules for the supremum. The so-called concave-like setting, which covers the particular case of finite families, gives rise to simpler criteria. We give an application to the regularization problem in convex optimization. The first author was partially supported by Centro de Modelamiento Matemático (CMM), ACE210010 and FB210005, BASAL funds for center of excellence and ANID-Chile grant Fondecyt Regular 1240335. Comparative Analysis of Short-Term Visual Performance of Four Daily Simultaneous Vision Center-Near Multifocal Contact Lenses

    No full text
Objectives: To compare the visual performance and subjective satisfaction of four daily disposable multifocal contact lenses (MCLs) in presbyopic subjects. Likewise, a comparative analysis of the performance of symmetrical and asymmetrical near addition designs was performed. Methods: Twenty presbyopic participants were enrolled in this randomized crossover study evaluating short-term visual performance. The assessed outcomes included distance, intermediate, and near visual acuity (VA), defocus curves, contrast sensitivity function (CSF), stereopsis, and patient satisfaction measured by a visual analogue scale (VAS). Results: Significantly better distance VA was found for BioTrue compared with MyDay (P=0.018). By contrast, near VA was significantly more limited with BioTrue compared with the rest of contact lenses (P≤0.036). No significant differences in CSF were found between MCLs (P>0.05). Asymmetrical designs showed better stereopsis than symmetrical designs (P≤0.018). VAS scale showed a nonsignificant trend to better scores for symmetrical designs for distance vision, and the opposite for near vision (P>0.05). Conclusions: Daily disposable MCLs demonstrated satisfactory short-term performance, although design differences should guide individualized selection to optimize visual outcomes. Notably, asymmetrical lens designs did not compromise stereopsis and may offer superior near VA compared with symmetrical alternatives. The authors received funding from Centro Internacional para la Investigación del Envejecimiento, Fundación de la Comunidad Valenciana (ICAR) for the performance of this research within the framework of the research project PRESBYSIM
