Catalytic nitrate reduction using a Pd-Cu catalysts supported on carbon materials with different porous structure

    No full text
The properties of the materials used as catalysts significantly affect their performance in catalytic NO3- reduction with hydrogen in polluted drinking water. Most studies have focused on how the active phase influences reaction selectivity and minimizes undesired NH4+ generation; however, there is still no clear consensus on the role of pore structure. In this study, carbon materials with different surface properties were used as supports to synthesize tailored Pd-Cu catalysts, assessing the role of micro- and mesopores in catalyst activity and selectivity in relation to mass transfer. Catalysts with Pd-Cu loadings of 1–1 and 1.5–1 wt% were examined. Higher catalytic activity was observed in catalysts supported on materials with low micropore volume, as limited reagent accessibility to metal within micropores hindered their effectiveness. It was also demonstrated that selectivity to NH4+ increased with higher micropore volume and micropore contribution to surface area, attributed to an imbalance in reagent transfer. This imbalance led to a higher H/N ratio at active sites within micropores and a corresponding increase in pH.The authors greatly appreciate the support from Spanish Agencia Estatal de Investigación RTI2018-098431-B-I00 (MCIU/AEI/FEDER, UE) and PID2021-123079OB-I00 project funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and ERDF/EU. Analysis of periodic patterns, noise characteristics, and predictive modeling of polar motion and length of day

Earth orientation parameters (EOP) are critical for applications in orbit determination, astronomy, space geodesy, and geophysics. Accurate predictions of EOP rely on the identification of both deterministic periodic patterns and noise characteristics. This study addresses these requirements by analyzing the Polar Motion (PM) and Length Of Day (LOD) time series to determine its stochastic model structure, estimated using least squares variance component estimation (LS-VCE). With this model, deterministic periodic patterns were extracted through least squares harmonic estimation (LS-HE) and validated against colored noise components to identify significant signals. Using the IERS 14 C04 data from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2019, the study identified the noise as power-law with a spectral index of -1.5, suggesting non-stationary fractional Brownian characteristics. LS-HE detected dominant frequencies in PM–notably the Chandler and annual signals–and in LOD, with annual, semiannual, 14-day, and 9-day signals. Building on these findings, short-, mid-, and long-term prediction model were developed for the PM and LOD time series from September 2021 to December 2022. The predictive model combines the LS-HE-extracted signals and the noise model to generate forecasts. These predictions were compared with other models from the Second Earth Orientation Parameter Prediction Comparison Campaign, demonstrating competitive accuracy, particularly for the initial forecast days. The results validate that combining LS-HE with a realistic noise model provides an effective approach for short-term of the PM and LOD forecasting, meeting the accuracy goals of geodetic and geophysical applications.SB were partially supported by Generalitat Valenciana (SEJIGENT/2021/001).

Nostalgia for More Sensible Times: José Nicolás de Azara and the New Diplomatic Practices of Revolutionary France

    No full text
Diplomacy during the Directory (1795-1799) and the Napoleonic Consulate (1799-1804) underwent a profound transformation compared to the practices of the Ancien Régime. Within this framework, the figure of José Nicolás de Azara, ambassador of King Charles IV, emerged as a privileged observer. His extensive diplomatic experience in Rome and later in Paris enabled him to contrast the aristocratic practices of the past with the new revolutionary codes. The purpose of this article is to examine how Azara interpreted these new diplomatic practices, while also assessing to what extent such changes represented genuine innovations or, alternatively, the continuation of preexisting dynamics under new forms. To this end, the study draws on correspondence preserved in the Archivo Histórico Nacional, the Biblioteca Nacional, the Archivo General de Palacio and the Archive du Ministère des Affaires Étrangères of France.

The training of nursing professionals traditionally includes theory and structured practice in hospital and/or outpatient settings, in order to develop the skills necessary to interpret, intervene, and care for patients. This paper describes the Clinical Practice Learning Experiences of Interns in the Bachelor of Nursing program at the University of Colima for the 2024-2025 period. This is a qualitative study with a social phenomenology approach. Information was collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Of 110 subjects, the sample consisted of nine participants in their ninth semester who are performing constitutional social service. The results reveal the experiences, authentic learning, clinical scenarios, skills, and contact with clinical faculty as the main learning experiences during the clinical practice. We can conclude that the experiences are divided into two moments. In the first, students perceive the internship as an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and develop practical skills in a real environment. However, at the beginning, this vision was accompanied by emotions such as fear and anxiety, reflecting insecurity in the face of the demands of the clinical setting and expectations of technical learning and adaptation to new responsibilities. In the second stage, participants value the internship as a transformative experience, where they acquired technical skills such as the handling of medical equipment and socio-emotional skills such as empathy and conflict resolution. Likewise, the study highlights areas of opportunity that can be addressed or reinforced during the course of the degree program in classroom settings, both in terms of technical professional skills (such as catheterization, taking vital signs, pharmacology, Pap smears, and infusion pump management, among others) and cross-cutting skills associated with the development of social-emotional skills to deal with certain challenging attitudes encountered on a daily basis.

The representation of Margaret of Austria in the poetry of Jean Lemaire de Belges

Margaret of Austria (1480-1530), daughter of Archduke Maximilian of Austria and Mary of Burgundy, was an outstanding diplomat and politician. She was entrusted with the regency of the Netherlands, first on behalf of her father and later of her nephew Charles. She became one of the most powerful women of her time. She was a very erudite person and a great patron of the arts who transformed Mechelen into an important cultural centre. One of the poets who came under her protection was Jean Lemaire de Belges, one of the first humanist writers in the French language. This study analyses how Margaret of Austria is represented in two works written by Jean Lemaire de Belges in 1505, La couronne margaritique and his Épître de l’Amant vert. These two texts are closely related to the cultural context of the time and to the two literary debates of the period, the querelle des femmes and the querelle de «La belle dame sans mercy». We will see how women characters are praised in these works and how the writer defends his patron’s ability to occupy positions of power.

Hydrochar supported Mg–Fe layered double hydroxide hybrid for efficient and reusable removal of tetracyclines from water

    No full text
A hybrid photocatalyst, Mg–Fe-LDH@HC (layered double hydroxide supported on corn-stalk hydrochar), was synthesized via coprecipitation and evaluated for the removal and photodegradation of tetracyclines in water. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the formation of a hydrotalcite-like phase with partial amorphous carbon contribution, while SEM–EDS mapping evidenced a uniform dispersion of Mg–Fe-LDH over the hydrochar surface. The hybrid exhibited an apparent optical bandgap of 1.81 eV, favoring visible-light absorption. Under ultraviolet irradiation and optimized operational conditions (H2O2 = 5.4 μM, pH = 6.0, 25 °C), Mg–Fe-LDH@HC achieved 99.09 % total tetracycline degradation after 120 min. Kinetic fitting followed a pseudo-second-order model (R2 > 0.94), indicating a chemisorption-dominated mechanism coupled with reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Radical scavenging and EDTA inhibition tests demonstrated that photogenerated electrons and •OH radicals were the main oxidative agents, with additional contributions from a heterogeneous Fenton pathway with no evidence of a homogeneous Fenton mechanism. The catalyst retained 91.3 % of its initial efficiency after five reuse cycles, with partial recovery after mild regeneration. Acute toxicity assays using Artemia salina, Daphnia magna, and Raphidocelis subcapitata revealed a 65–80 % reduction in post-treatment toxicity compared to the untreated effluent. These results demonstrate that Mg–Fe-LDH@HC is an efficient, recyclable, and eco-compatible photocatalyst for the degradation of antibiotic contaminants in water systems. The authors acknowledge the financial support provided by the Universidad Técnica de Manabí through the research project “Synthesis of new hybrid nanomaterials for the removal of emerging contaminants present in water” (PYT3670-CONV2024-FCMFQ0022).
