Calvino, Macedonio and Piglia. Tabucchi, Beckett and Drummond: resonances and hypotheses

    No full text
The first part of this brief contribution aims to establish connections between Macedonio Fernández, Ricardo Piglia and Italo Calvino, even if it begins with a memory of Carlos Fuentes. The second is devoted to a hypothetical triangulation between Samuel Beckett, Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Antonio Tabucchi. Ricardo Piglia, with Cesare Pavese as his main Italian reference, wanted to follow in the footsteps of Italo Calvino and, inspired by Lezioni americane. Sei Proposte per il prossimo millennio, went so far as to write and publish his sixth proposal, the one Calvino did not have time to write: the one devoted to «Consistency». Of this we have only the title in his portfolio. When Piglia wrote his proposal, he did so by formulating his own theory on the future of literature from a Latin American perspective. Both were regular readers of Macedonio Fernández. Regarding the second triad of authors (Beckett, De Andrade and Tabucchi), we will sketch a possible network of cables linking them in different ways. In particular, a verse by Drummond de Andrade, which resonates again in the work of Beckett and Tabucchi and, in the case of the Italian author, will accompany him throughout his career as a writer

    No full text
Linguistic research requires comprehensive and representative resources to accurately reflect the phenomena under analysis. This study explores the synonyms and phraseological variants of the Spanish expression ganarse la vida (make a living). In a first phase, the synonymic content of ganarse la vida is examined through a selection of 17 dictionaries of various types, including synonym dictionaries, thesauri, and both monolingual and bilingual dictionaries. In a second phase, after outlining the concept of phraseological variation, the phenomenon is illustrated using the Sketch Engine tool and the esTenTen18 corpus. The results point to a broad set of synonymous and variant expressions whose frequency and distribution support their inclusion in the development of linguistic and lexicographic resources.

New Imaginaries of Rural Life based on Documentary ‘El pueblo’: An Experience from Audiovisual Sociology

    No full text
This paper analyzes the imaginaries associated with Spanish rurality through the media response generated after the screening of the documentary “El Pueblo” (1983) in Villaluenga del Rosario in 2019 and the re-reading projected by the essay “El Pueblo y yo” (2020), identifying and classifying their explanatory components. From a methodological point of view, an analytical strategy based on a mixed methodology was used, addressing a case study focused on the documentary's re-reading and the qualitative analysis of the essay's media impact. 43 units of analysis (communicative impacts) and 96 quotes obtained from various media sources (documentary chapters, newspaper articles, blogs, social networks, and presentations) covering the period 2020–2023 were analyzed. Information was processed through content analysis and classical discourse analysis, identifying and classifying the associated social imaginaries, as well as their temporal direction. The results reveal a complex constellation of imaginaries associated with rurality, highlighting the “España vaciada” (depopulated Spain) narrative, the “slow rural,” the “rural franquista” (Francoist rural), and the tension between an immutable rurality and material change. Other identified imaginaries include the exogenous gaze, material progress, “lost Spain,” “cultural wars,” the “literary and mysterious rural,” the urban desire to “have a village,” “the exotic,” and the emergence of landscape and rural cultural heritage. The main conclusions suggest an urban bias in the media gaze with a focus on the past, certain saturation of the depopulation narrative, political underrepresentation, and urban resistance to rural modernization, favoring a “musealization” imaginary. Rural cultural heritage emerges as a new and significant imaginary

The halotolerant white sea anemone Anthothoe chilensis, highly abundant in brine discharges zones, as a promising biomonitoring species for evaluating the impacts of desalination plants

Seawater desalination raises concerns about its environmental repercussions, particularly the impact of brine discharge on benthic communities. In this study, we evaluated the effects of desalination and artificial brines on the sea anemone Anthothoe chilensis, following its observed proliferation near a brine outfall from a Chilean desalination plant. We measured biomarkers for oxidative stress (ROS content, lipid peroxidation, and protein carbonylation), antioxidant response (thiols), and osmotic stress (free amino acids and proline) in individuals collected from a brine discharge pipe (∼56 psu) and compared them to a population living in natural seawater salinity. Additionally, we conducted controlled laboratory experiments where A. chilensis specimens were exposed to a control salinity of 33 psu and to elevated salinities of 37 and 42 psu for 24 and 48 h. Results revealed a significant decrease in oxidative damage biomarkers, such as protein carbonylation and ROS content, along with an increase in free amino acids, proline, and thiols content at higher salinity levels, particularly under controlled conditions. These findings demonstrate the remarkable efficient cellular stress responses of this highly halotolerant species, which could potentially promote risky A. chilensis blooms in brine discharges areas. Additionally, this study provides valuable biomarker information for assessing the short-term impacts of brine discharges, which can be used in biomonitoring programs within the desalination sector.FRR was financed by Fondecyt #11220425 grant from ANID, Chile. Reception of an Early Commedia in Sicily

    No full text
This article examines an early manuscript of the Commedia, belonging to the group known as the Danti del Cento (1325–1350). Insofar as possible, I seek to trace the manuscript’s history from Florence to the Biblioteca Nacional de España (BNE), where it is currently preserved under the shelf-mark Vitr. 23.3. Produced in Florence by the principal scribe responsible for the Cento group, the codex was completed in Sicily, where its illumination was executed in the mid-fourteenth century. In the fifteenth century, a hand imitating the Florentine script transcribed a Sicilian poem by the Messina notary Andrìa di Anfusu, concerning the eruption of Mount Etna in 1408. The poem, composed in terza rima in imitation of Dante, is dedicated to Queen Blanca of Sicily. The codex was transferred to the library of the Viceroyal Palace in 1679, together with other materials confiscated following the uprising in the city of Messina. Although it has long been assumed that the manuscript came from the holdings of the Cathedral of Messina, a note of ownership suggests the alternative possibility that it may have belonged to Carlo Ventimiglia. The Viceroy of Sicily and bibliophile Juan Francisco Pacheco Téllez Girón, 4th Duke of Uceda, took hold of this collection and moved it with him to Madrid in 1696 upon his return. There, it was again confiscated —this time by King Philip V of Spain— and subsequently incorporated into the Royal Library. Psychometric properties of the curiosity and exploration inventory (CEI-II) and its relationship with the attitudes of Spanish future teachers toward plastic arts education

    No full text
Curiosity is an important personality trait with regard to human motivation to perform tasks. For this reason, it has been widely studied by academic researchers. This study examines the psychometric properties of all of the validations of the Curiosity and Exploration Inventory (CEI-II) to observe which version best adapts to the evaluation of the construct in future teachers from Spain, using a sample of 815 university students (Mage = 20.64; SD = 1.76). Likewise, the profiles of distinct intensities of curiosity were created, in order to observe if statistically significant differences exist in terms of attitude toward the Didactics of Plastic Expression in 328 university students (Mage = 21.56; SD = 2.01). The analyses revealed that a two-factor structure with two correlated items was the version displaying the best psychometric properties. In addition, three curiosity profiles were observed having high, moderate, and low intensities. The High Curiosity profile was found to receive the highest score on positive attitude toward the Didactics of Plastic Expression. To conclude, this study offers novel information regarding curiosity and the attitude of future teachers toward artistic subjects, suggesting the need to continue with this research line. This research was funded by grant number CIGE/2023/184

An approach to the epistolary archive of Tomás Segovia and his connections with mainland Spain

    No full text
The aim of this article is to offer a brief approach to the letters of Tomás Segovia, unpublished until now. To that end, his personal archive deposited in Mexico has been consulted. In this way, a general overview of the documentation is presented, and an initial proposal for the classification of the letters is offered, according to their recipients and periods. The analysis of the letters further confirms the author’s central presence in the Latin American literary field and his ties of friendship with authors such as Ángel Rama, Ida Vitale, Antonio Alatorre, and Carlos Fuentes, as well as his involvement with the Mexican «medio siglo» group, and reveals relevant information about editorial projects they developed together. Furthermore, this collection of letters shows the relationship Segovia maintained with some writers of the 1939 Spanish Republican exile. Finally, the article pays special attention to the correspondence Segovia kept from the 1960s onwards with the cultural sphere of the Spanish mainland. This correspondence makes it possible to describe, on the one hand, the networks of connection that were woven, and on the other, explains how the process of the author’s incorporation into Spanish literature took place
