The impact of generative AI on academic reading and writing: a synthesis of recent evidence (2023–2025)

    No full text
Introduction: The aim of this systematic review is to examine the scientific literature published on digital reading and writing in higher education within the field of social sciences, assisted by generative artificial intelligence. Methods: The PRISMA methodology and the SALSA Framework were applied, based on a bibliographic search conducted in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Journal articles that explicitly addressed the established topic, published between 1 January 2023 and 7 March 2025, in open access, in Spanish or English, and within the field of Social Sciences, were included. After a rigorous screening and selection process, a final sample of 136 articles was compiled and used as the basis for the study. Results: The findings indicate that the reviewed research employs a range of methodologies, encompassing quantitative (surveys, experimental studies, psychometric evaluations), qualitative (case studies, semi-structured interviews, thematic analysis), and mixed-method approaches. The results also reveal a clear trend toward the integration of artificial intelligence tools –particularly ChatGPT– into academic writing processes. A significant improvement is observed in the quality of students’ texts, especially regarding coherence, discursive organization, lexical richness, and argumentation. Furthermore, the role of AI in formative feedback, idea generation, paraphrasing, and fostering student autonomy in self-editing their texts is highlighted. The research also identifies key challenges, such as students’ overreliance on AI, diminished metacognitive engagement, and ethical dilemmas related to plagiarism and authorship. Discussion: The emergence of AI in higher education is transforming teaching and learning processes, creating opportunities for personalization and enhanced support in academic writing. However, the scientific literature also exposes tensions between its potential benefits and associated risks, such as student dependency, loss of critical thinking, and ethical concerns regarding authorship and plagiarism. These findings call for a rethinking of pedagogical, assessment, and institutional practices, as well as the development of critical and digital literacy skills among both teachers and students. This research has been derived from the R+D+I Project entitled “Educational transformation: Exploring the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the reading and writing skills of university students” (ref. The functionality of the Comarcal Space and the Impact of Sectoral Training and Employment Planning Instruments: Application to the Marina Baixa (Valencian Community)

    No full text
This paper focuses on the analysis of territorial reorganization processes in a coastal “comarca” (subregional district) of the Region of Valencia, the Marina Baixa, understood as functional, institutional, and socioeconomic transformations that affect the articulation of comarcal spaces. It also assesses the territorial functionality of two recently implemented sectoral planning instruments related to employment and training. From the perspective of territorial development, the study examines these processes of change and the capacity of such instruments to articulate supra-municipal public policies and respond to the challenges of territorial cohesion and spatial planning on an intermediate scale. The research adopts a qualitative methodology that combines documentary and regulatory analysis, the treatment of socio-demographic and territorial indicators, and the production of thematic cartography using GIS tools. The case study focuses on the Marina Baixa, due to its representativeness of the tensions between administrative fragmentation, coastal concentration, and territorial imbalance in contexts of tourism-led specialization. The results highlight the potential of the comarcal scale as an operational framework for designing adapted territorial strategies, as well as the relevance of the sectoral instruments analyzed—the Territorial Pacts for Employment and the Territorial Councils for Vocational Training—as mechanisms of coordination and shared planning. These instruments foster more integrated and coherent territorial governance, although their organizational and institutional limitations reveal the need to consolidate more stable, coordinated frameworks with stronger political backing and resource allocation

    No full text
This article presents a comprehensive theoretical synthesis that critically examines and reframes two distinct facets of autism spectrum condition (ASC). First, it deconstructs the broad "extreme male brain" theory linking fetal testosterone to autistic traits, arguing against its reductive determinism. It proposes a more nuanced and constrained model wherein androgen-driven neural development may predispose a subset of individuals towards a specific cognitive phenotype characterized by systemizing strengths and savant abilities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. Second, it advances a novel ethological framework, translating Konrad Lorenz's principles of learning and feedback to reinterpret restricted and repetitive behaviours (RRBs) not as pathological stereotypes but as purposeful, self-regulatory actions maintained by an internal positive feedback loop. The overarching argument champions a person-centric science of autism that integrates neurobiological insights with a functional, phenomenological understanding of behaviour, emphasizing profound individual heterogeneity and the critical need for hypotheses that respect this diversity. This work establishes a structured theoretical foundation for future empirical research into cognitive subtypes and the homeostatic functions of RRBs.Este artículo presenta una síntesis teórica integral que examina críticamente y replantea dos facetas distintas de la condición del espectro autista (CEA).

    No full text
This paper analyses the evolution of the intellectual property offense defined in Article 270 of the Spanish Penal Code, in light of successive legislative reforms and technological changes that have transformed the ways in which protected works and performances are exploited. It examines the scope of the offense's material object –the work and performance– and the introduction of the open-ended clause "exploitation in any other way" as a response to new forms of digital economic exploitation. In particular, it analyses the punishment of unauthorized transformation, as well as the challenges posed by generative artificial intelligence and the use of protected works in algorithmic training processes.Investigación realizada en el Proyecto PID2022-138770OB-I00 “DERECHO PENAL Y DISTRIBUCIÓN DE LA RIQUEZA EN LA SOCIEDAD TECNOLÓGICA (II)”, financiado/a por MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 y por FEDER, UE

Uncovering the time-depth of rock art: seriation and agency in the case of Levantine rock art of eastern Iberia

    No full text
Eastern Iberia is home to one of the largest concentrations of rock art sites in Europe. Most of them have been attributed to post-glacial graphic traditions created in open-air shelters, often with a considerable number of superimpositions. One such tradition is Levantine art, whose iconography is of great significance for understanding Holocene social practices on a continental scale. In this article, we approach the relative temporality of this rock art style through examination of sites with a multitude of superimpositions. These palimpsests allow us to gain insight into the time-depth of these rock art traditions and the agency exercised by their authors with respect to the past and alterity. The article presents a novel and cutting-edge microarchaeological methodology and its applications to approach the sequence of Levantine art and its temporal and spatial relationships with other rock art, that could be useful for examining similar issues at a global scale. The work was supported by the Agency of Research and Innovation of the regional government of Castilla – La Mancha and European Union Funds for the Regional Development [SBPLY/21/180501/000073]

An overview of Latin America in Italy: Germán Arciniegas and the counter-history

    No full text
This article offers an overview of the reflections of Germán Arciniegas on Italy and their relation to Latin American identity through a new interpretation of the history of both cultures. Arciniegas served as his country’s ambassador to Italy and the Holy See. He was also a historian, essayist, journalist, and novelist, although he resisted being pigeonholed into these labels. His intellectual and diplomatic work sought to contribute to the democratization of Latin America, highlighting its historical struggles for democracy and presenting it as a model for postwar Europe. Based on a broad study of his writings, this article presents a selection of his texts related to Italy, particularly those set in the Renaissance. It then explores key elements of his personal reading and interpretation of history—what he called «the reverse side of history» or «vulgar history»—in relation to Europe and Spain. Finally, it examines how these ideas were concretely applied in his work and writings during his time in Italy. Special attention is paid to his lecture L’America in Italia, later published in Spanish in Colombia and Mexico. The article concludes with a review of his polemic with the renowned Italian philosopher Giovanni Papini on the question of what America has contributed (or not) to the world, including as appendices a letter from Papini to Arciniegas and the response that the Colombian author himself wrote several years later regarding Papini’s position on Latin America.
