Public investment and tourism development: short-term evidence from French and Spanish regions

    No full text
Tourism constitutes a key driver of regional economic development, integrating diverse industries and fostering socio-economic growth. Acknowledging the strategic importance of public intervention in enhancing tourism development and competitiveness, this paper employs a disaggregated, dynamic panel analysis across two major EU tourism economies to isolate the effects of thematically classified public investments, according to the objectives of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) 2014–2020 programming period, on tourism performance. This study provides evidence on the short-term associations between finalized ERDF investments and regional tourism development, as measured by the Gross Value Added (GVA). The findings reveal that investments in connectivity infrastructure have a significant and positive influence on regional tourism outcomes. In contrast, other ERDF-funded initiatives did not exhibit immediate measurable effects, likely due to their broader or longer-term objectives. The results provide a nuanced understanding of the relationship between specific types of public investment and tourism dynamics, offering actionable insights for policymakers seeking to optimize resource allocation and promote sustainable regional development.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature

Dámelo, Papichulo: A Preliminary Study on the Objectification of Women in Reggaeton and Latin Pop Songs Translation

    No full text
In the last two decades, reggaeton and Latin pop have become popular musical genres amongst mass consumption. The lyrics, which focus on the female gender as the clear protagonist, have often been the subject of criticism for the objectification through which they represent women. In this work we propose to analyze the image of women from a translation point of view, comparing the lyrics of the songs and their translation into English with the aim of determining the role of composers and translators in the creation of songs belonging to musical genres that have made the sexualization of women its distinctive mark. To this end, a parallel corpus consisting of songs in Spanish and their corresponding English versions was compiled. The verses were analyzed and categorized based on their type of objectifying content. Based on Van Dijk’s (2003) thematic discourse analysis approach, which seeks to examine how discourse contributes to the reproduction of sexism in society, we apply a classification of sexist themes developed following a preliminary examination of the corpus texts. At the same time, their translations into English were categorized following Franzon’s proposal for musical translation options and Hurtado Albir’s classification of translation techniques (2001). The results indicate a high content of objectification of women in both Spanish songs and their translation into English, though some differences were found between them, particularly in references to elements like women’s physique or male self-praise. Although the translation technique used for the songwriting process of the English versions (discursive creation) allows composers absolute freedom in terms of themes, recurring patterns about women and sex were found in the corpus. This repetition of certain very specific topics reveals the reification of women as a central element of these musical genres

3D Reconstruction of DART Ejecta at Dimorphos Reveals an Anisotropic, Filamentary Structure

    No full text
We present a 3D reconstruction of the ejecta plume generated by the DART impact on Dimorphos based on LUKE images acquired by LICIACube. Using adaptive histogram equalization and geometric coregistration from multiple vantage points, we identified and tracked extended ejecta features and reconstructed their 3D spatial distribution with a voxel-based method. The reconstructed ejecta field shows strong anisotropy. An azimuth-matched comparison with the published elliptical cone highlights coherent, direction-dependent departures from a simple conic surface, despite broad agreement on the global cone orientation. This quantifies nonaxisymmetric structures that cone models cannot capture. We derived lower limits to ejecta velocities ranging from 20 to 50 m s−1, consistent with numerical simulations of hypervelocity impacts into weak, porous targets. Compared to laboratory experiments, these values correspond to few-meter launch depths, suggesting a significant role of near-surface boulders in the ejecta distribution. Complementing this ejecta filament analysis, we studied 105 isolated comoving diffuse ejecta features, tracked up to 7 km from the impact site. These features followed highly tangential (85∘–92∘ from the impact direction) trajectories relative to Dimorphos’s surface. Their velocity distribution peaks around 50 m s−1, indicating that crater excavation persisted throughout the imaging sequence. Our results challenge and refine previous cone-based ejecta distribution models, offering new insights into the complex nature of impact-induced ejecta and improving constraints relevant for planetary defense strategies. Given these new insights, we urge the designers of future planetary defense missions to take into consideration anisotropic ejecta models for more realistic estimates of the imparted momentum via a kinetic impactor technique.J.D.P.D. thanks the friendly folks of the Hiking Crew in Rome for their kind support in numerous ways. Companion Animals as Active Participants in the Shaping of New Family Forms

    No full text
The present study seeks to approach the social phenomenon that accentuates and promotes the incorporation of domestic animals into the family as another member. This current scenario is framed mainly within the recent amendment of the Mortgage Law and the Civil Procedure Law, by which animals cease to be considered objects and are granted the categorization of sentient beings. The study also draws significant value from the progressive evolution of research related to interspecies relationships. In this regard, the Spanish context is a recurring factor in addressing this phenomenon. It reveals a family structure that shifts toward the emotional dimension, one that is shaped by feelings rather than instrumental purposes. A family with greater affective capacity, within which the animal may find its place. The general objective is to approach this new reality through the observation and description of the perceptions and attitudes of the Valencian population regarding animals. To achieve this, a quantitative investigation was conducted, whose main tool was the collection of primary data through the design of a questionnaire. The survey was carried out both online and in person across the three provinces, reaching 1,718 responses and providing a decisive sample to gain deeper knowledge of the inhabitants of the Valencian Community. The main results are enlightening: there is a strong perception of closeness between humans and animals, and this closeness is the factor that fosters affectivity and the positive appreciation of relationships between them. Finally, the surveyed population is inclined to consider animals as family members

Thermal comfort in school children: Testing the validity of the Fanger method for a Mediterranean climate

    No full text
Thermal comfort is an essential factor when designing or refurbishing schools because it helps to improve wellbeing and academic performance. However, little attention has been paid to assessing the thermal comfort level of children. Previous studies on thermal comfort have mainly focused on adults' perceptions, extrapolating their results to all ages without cross-checking them for relevance. The aim of this research was to determine whether children perceive temperature in a similar way to adults and if their thermal comfort limits are the same. A school in south-eastern Spain was selected as the case study. Thermal comfort surveys of children were conducted and compared with analytical calculations obtained using the Fanger method. The results showed that the Fanger method was not valid for the estimation of children's thermal comfort, especially in girls and younger children. The novelty of this research demonstrates that children have specific thermal comfort requirements that are not covered by current standards and calculation methods, such as the Fanger method. Analysis also determined the correction coefficients necessary for adapting Fanger's analytical method to children according to age and gender in BShs climate

Microplastic in clams: An extensive spatial assessment in south Brazil

    No full text
Microplastic pollution is becoming a continuously growing environmental concern, while bivalve mollusks are particularly vulnerable due to their sessile habits and feeding through water filtration processes. Microplastic incidence in soft tissues of the clam Amarilladesma mactroides was assessed along unconsolidated substrates distributed in extensive coastal regions of southern Brazil. Influence of urbanization levels, distance to rivers and local hydrodynamics on microplastic accumulation by the clam was tested. The average concentration of microplastics was high (3.09 ± 2.11 particles.g−1), considering 16 sampled sites. Particles were mainly composed by polyamide, polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate, while were mainly smaller, fibrous and colorless. High urbanization and closer proximity to rivers insured higher contamination, which is a trend observed globally. No influence of coastal hydrodynamics was seen. Considering obtained findings, A. mactroides presents good potential to be used as a valuable tool to assess microplastic contamination in unconsolidated substrates of beach areas. This research was supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP n. 2022/14011-3). Pyrolysis conversion of multi-layer packaging waste under a CO2 atmosphere: Thermo-kinetic study, evolved products analysis and artificial neural networks modeling

Packaging waste such as beverage carton forms a significant part of municipal solid waste and its pyrolysis behavior, kinetics, and thermodynamics were studied. A four-stage decomposition process was revealed: dehydration below 200 ℃, paperboard degradation at 200–400 ℃, polyethylene devolatilization at 400–550 ℃, and inorganic decomposition at 550–900 ℃. The evolved products included furans and acetic acid during stage II, followed by the presence of 2-butene and 1-pentene in the subsequent stage. Apparent activation energy (Ea) were determined using model-free models, revealing a notable level of comparability among these results. The average Ea was 123.6 kJ/mol within α range of 0.10–0.60, increasing to 233.3 kJ/mol beyond that range. The most probable reaction mechanism was determined, with the one-dimensional model proving more reliable. An artificial neural network model was developed to predict the thermal degradation. The selected topology of 5*15*1 displayed a robust ability to predict the thermal data. This work was financially supported by the Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant no. Multielemental determination in lubricating oil samples by microwave-induced plasma optical emission spectrometry after extraction induced by emulsion breaking

    No full text
Extraction induced by emulsion breaking (EIEB) was studied as a strategy for the determination of Al, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, and Pb in used lubricating oil via microwave-induced plasma optical emission spectrometry (MIP OES). No spectral or nonspectral interferences were observed in the developed method. These were evaluated as a function of the emission intensity of natural molecular species in the N2 plasma and different atomic and ionic emission lines. The time required for extraction was evaluated, and the best sensitivity for all the elements was obtained at 40 min of contact between the sample and the extraction solution in the presence of the surfactant. Doehlert matrix response surface methodology was employed to study the effects and interactions between the nitric acid (extractor) and surfactant (emulsifier) concentrations during sample preparation. The recommended conditions for 3.0 g of sample were as follows: 5.0 mL of extraction mixture consisting of 2.8 mol/L nitric acid and 3.0 % (v v−1) of the surfactant Triton X-114. The limits of quantification obtained were 2.9 (Al), 43 (Cr), 4.0 (Cu), 17 (Fe), 4.0 (Mg), 3.7 (Mn), 7.0 (Mo), 9.2 (Ni) and 45 (Pb) µg kg−1. The method developed was applied in the analyses of lubricating oil samples. The following concentration ranges (mg kg−1) were found: 2.5–106 (Al), 2.8–24.8 (Cr), 3.5–21.4 (Cu), 16.9–199 (Fe), 33.4–64.0 (Mg), 0.57–9.7 (Mn), 4.7–43 (Mo), 1.6–11.1 (Ni) and 2.0–12.6 (Pb).This study was financed in part by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - Brasil (CAPES) - Finance Code 001. Claudiléia Lemes Dias and the Representation of Latin-American Trans People in Italy

    No full text
The intersectional condition of LGBTQIA+ migrants has been the subject of growing interest in recent years, among other things because these subjectivities embody a questioning of Western modernity, which, in its official narratives, is dominated by the sexualisation of migrants from some Latin American countries. The text proposes, as a case study, the narratives by Claudiléia Lemes Dias, a Brazilian author living in Italy, who, in some of her stories, represents the stereotypes found in Italian society with regard to trans women.Proyecto LATILMA financiado por el Programa Add SAPIExcellence de Sapienza, Universidad de Roma
