    No full text
The rabies outbreaks of Indonesia in these two decades tends to spread faster to other islands/regions. Trade trafficking and people's habits of carrying dogs between islands are contributing factor that triggers rabies cases in Provinces previously free of rabies. This study aims to qualitative risk assessment entry and spread of rabies in dogs into Sorong City of West Papua Province. Methods of collecting primary data obtained from expert opinions, questionnaires, interviews, and direct observation in the field. Secondary data is taken through search of scientific publications, surveillance results, unpublished data in the form of reports, and documents from authorized agencies. The results of study showed that release assessment was high, the incidence of rabies in dogs was 52%, and 180 cases of rabies in humans (lyssa) in Sulawesi, Maluku and North Maluku. The exposure assessment was high based on the presence of rabies transmite animal (RTA) traffic from endemic areas, 58% dogs, 38% cats, and 4% apes from Java 68% (Surabaya 50%, Jakarta 18%), Sulawesi 10% (Manado and Bitung), Maluku 14% (Ambon) and North Maluku 8% (Ternate). The consequence assessment is high because there is a single impact that is categorized as nationally significant. The estimated risk of getting into rabies is high. The potential pathways used in RTA traffic to Sorong City is by sea at 89.3% and air at 10.7%. The results of the study concluded that the qualitative risk assessment of entry and spread of rabies in dogs to the Sorong City of West Papua Province was high. All risk assessments have low uncertainty

Decreasing egg production is an initial symptom of various diseases that infect commercial layer chickens. Diagnosis of diseases causing the decrease in egg production without high mortality rate is often thought to be caused by other poultry diseases because of the many similarities in manifestation between one disease and another. Avian influenza is a zoonotic infectious disease in poultry that can lead to high economic losses. This study aims to determine the contribution of avian influenza virus (AIV) infection to commercial laying hens showing symptoms of decreased production. The samples were oropharyngeal swabs of commercial laying hens which had symptoms of decreased production at productive age. Laboratory tests were carried out by histopathological examination, detection and identification of AIV with real time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and isolation with the viral culture technique on fertile chicken eggs. The results showed that there was type A AIV infection based on the qRT-PCR (matrix) test, but the subtypes were not identified (H5, H7, H9). The results of the isolation of the virus in the fertile chicken eggs showed embryonic death in which all embryonic organs show hemorrhages. Allantoic fluid does not agglutinate chicken red blood cells. Histopathological features of the pathognomonic lesions in lungs infected with AIV were severe congestion and hemorrhages. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that there was a contribution of type A AIV infection. Early diagnosis of AIV could determine more appropriate actions, including control, prevention and eradication

Diabetes Melitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia due to lack of insulin secretion or insulin activity resistance. Chronic hyperglycemia in diabetes is associated with long-term damage, dysfunction, and failure of various organs, especially the kidneys, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels. The purpose of this study was to analyze the activity of Adiponektin, superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde, and glucose level in Streptozotocin-induced diabetic wistar rats. All wistar rats were divided into 4 groups, control (D0), induction group (D1), thitonia extract dose 100 mg / kg bw (D2) and catechin dose 10 mg/kg bw (D3) for 7 days. Model diabetes were used by induction of streptozotocin (Stz) at dosage 60 mg / kg bw intraperitoneally (ip) for 7 days. On the 8th day after the treatment, all groups of rats were sacrificed for blood samples for measured levels of superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde and Adiponektine protein using Elisa technique, and measure of glucose level with calorimetry technique. Statistical analysis of data to examine differences in treatment and control was conducted by one way Anova test with a 95% confidence level (α=0.05). The results showed that there were differences in glucose levels (p = 0.020) and Adiponektin (p = 0.001) between the control and treatment groups, but there were no differences in level of MDA (p = 0.103) and SOD (p = 0.207 ) between groups. Base on the results of the study concluded that the administration of Tithonia Diversifolia leaf extract could reduce blood sugar and Adiponectin concentrations significantly (p≤0.05) in streptozotocin-induced diabetic on rats

    Get PDF
With the prohibition of the use of Antibiotic growth promotors (AGP) used in animal feed, especially in broilers, the use of feed additives such as herbs, probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics or mixtures of some of these ingredients is currently widely used as feed replacements for AGP substitutes. One of the commercial feed additives that contain combinations herbal and probiotics is Promix®. In broiler maintenance, one vaccine that must be given is Newcastle Disease (ND) vaccine. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of supplementation of commercial feed combination of herbs and probiotics in broilers given ND vaccines. A total of 42 broilers were divided into two, group A (vaccinated with ND) and B (not vaccinated ND), each with 21 heads. Group A is divided into groups A1, A2 and A3 each with 7 heads. The A1 group is given only basal feed; A2 basal feed and AGP; A3 basal feed and Promix®. Group B is divided by B1, B2 and B3 same as group A before. Broilers are maintained for 5 weeks and weighing each week. All data obtained were statistically analyzed using One Way ANOVA and continued with Duncan's post hoc test. The results of this study were that the group of chickens given the ND vaccine and given supplements of Promix® had greater weight gain (P˂0.05) compared to the AGP and basal groups in the fifth week while in the group of chickens that were not given the ND vaccine but given supplement Promix® feed had greater weight gain (P˂0.05) compared to the AGP and basal groups in the fourth week. In the fifth week there was no significant difference (P˂0.05) between all feed groups in the group not given the ND vaccine. The conclusion of this study that feed additives contain combinations herbal and probiotics can replace AGP as feed additive in broiler. By giving ND vaccine the weight gain of the feed group plus Promix® showed a significant increase in weight gain

Recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) is one of the biotechnology-based drugs that are needed by the human medicine and has also been used in the veterinary medicine. Currently RhEPO has been widely used in the world of human medicine for the treatment of anaemia caused by renal failure, cancer, chronic inflammation and AIDS. In veterinary medicine, although there is still not much data on its achievements, rhEPO has also been used for cases of chronic renal failure in dogs and cats. However, since rhEPO is not identical to feline EPO and canine EPO, some patients eventually produce antibodies against the drug. The antibodies not only prevent EPO therapy from being effective, but also may lead to severe and life-threatening anemia. This paper provides a review of the use of RhEPO, rfEPO and rcEPO in veterinary medicine, especially for the purpose of non-regenerative anemia therapy in cases of chronic renal failure in dogs and cats.

Digestive dysfunction is a common symptom of diabetes. Diabetes can lead to the loss of enteric neurons as well as nerve dysfunction and gastrointestinal complications. There has been no complete report of mienteric nitrergic of small intestines on hyperglycaemia condition, so the purpose of this study was to assess changes of nitrergic neural profile of small intestines on hyperglycemic Wistar strain rats (Rattus norvegicus). Twelve rats were adapted for 3 days, then they were randomly divided into 3 groups namely group I (K-1, as control), group II (K-2), and group III (K-3). Before treatment all rats were fasted for 12 hours, rats K-1 were induced with 1.0 ml of buffer citrate single peritoneal dose; rats K-2 were induced with 40 mg streptozotocin (STZ)/ kg body weight of single peritoneal dose; and rats K-3 were induced with 45 mg STZ /kg body weight of single peritoneal dose. On the 1st and 5th days after STZ induction, blood was collected through the coccigea vein to measure blood glucose levels and weigh the weight. On the day 5th the rats were uthanated with a high dose of ketamine, dissected and taken small intestines (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum) for staining with Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d). Morphometric changes of nitrergic neurons of the small intestine segments were observed. The results showed that on the 5th day increased blood glucose levels of the K-2 and K-3 groups were significantly higher than K-1 (P 0.05). The number of neurons in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum of K-2 group increased higher than that of K-1 and K-3 groups. These results indicate that in hyperglycaemic states, the number of nitrergic neurons increases (K-2 group), and there is a significant decrease in the number of neurons (group K-3) compared with K-1 and K-2 groups (P <0.01). The results of this study concluded, that the STZ induction treatment causes hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia does not affect to the body weight and the number of  nitrergic neurons of small intestines in Wistar strain rats (Rattus norvegicus)

The recent method of treatment for trematodiasis in cattle (age 1-10 years) using albendazol (10% of orally suspension) has deducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this anthelmintic to eradicate the trematoda infection especially Fasciola sp. and Paramphistomum sp. in Pakem subdistrict, Sleman district, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta Provence. These two species of trematodes were the mostly found in Yogyakarta area according to the annualy reports of Idul Qurban slaughter day. The cows used in this study were determined from three groups of farmers society at Pakem area. The physical examination and feces samplings for worm egg identification by Parfitt and Banks method were done as early examination to all populations. The positive results of Fasciola sp. and Paramphistomum sp. eggs of cows then grouped  (Group A,B, and C) and treated with albendazole at dose of 10 mg/kg of body weight. All groups treated countinously for one year with albendazole; Group A  repeated every two months, group B every four months, and group C every six months, respectively. Before administered the next dosing, the feces samplings and worm eggs identification were conducted to measure the effectiveness of albendazole that had applied. The results of treatments were the finding of trematoda eggs in feces then calculated descriptively. The effectiveness of albendazol of two months repetition was 31,25-100%, every four months was 38,47-46,15% and  six months repeatly was 42,86%. It concluded that the highest effectiveness of albendazol to trematodiasis in cattle was two months repetition of treatment. The evaluation of albendazole treatments of cattle infected by Fasciola sp. and Paramphistomum sp. during 12 months resulted the low effectiveness because of only 30% of population that cured from infections.

Infectious coryza (snot) is one of acute respiratory disease in breeders, layers, and broilers caused by Avibacterium paragallinarum (Av. paragallinarum). This disease is very harmful because of its cause decrease in egg production and high morbidity. Snot incident in Indonesia still is reported. Vaccination is one of the best preventive measures, but reports about Av. paragallinarum serotype at the field so lack so that the correspondence between serotype Av. paragallinarum in the field to those used for vaccination is unknown. Av. paragallinarum has strains with different antigenicity and until now known three serotypes there are serotypes A, B and C. Serotypes A and C are pathogenic then serotypes B. The purpose of this study was to isolate, identify and to determine the serotype of Av. paragallinarum from the commercial layer that showing symptoms of snot. Samples were taken from layer which showed symptoms of snot (nasal foul smelling exudate, infra-orbital and wattle swelling, conjunctivitis, and snoring) from some layer farms. Samples were cultured on chocolate agar and then incubated in a candle jar at 37 ᴼC for 18-24 hours. Bacteria colony and cell morphology were observed and performed biochemical tests (catalase, oxidase, urease, indole, and fermentation of carbohydrates) in suspected colonies. Serotypes test was conducted using plate agglutination test (PAT). This study revealed 4 isolates Av. paragallinarum with 2 isolates are serotype B and 2 other are serotype C
