Alignment of Wood with Rabbets and Winding Sticks: alignment of material based on descriptions by A. J. Roubo
Uppsats för avläggande av filosofie kandidatexamen med huvudområdet kulturvård med inriktning mot bygghantverk, 2025This work aims to reconstruct the main features of a work process, and the knowledge related to
Roubo’s method of aligning wooden surfaces using a rabbet and winding sticks. It examines which
tools were used, the order in which they were used, and their functional context. This study is based on
Roubo’s descriptions and other relevant sources that address this method and similar approaches to
aligning and planing wooden surfaces by hand. The goal is to assess its usability and relevance for
future hand planing. The text explores these aspects by analysing and comparing the writings of A. J.
Roubo and other literature on hand planing methods, as well as through testing the method with
experiments. The findings, presented in a discussion and experimentations, indicate that Roubo's
method serves as a viable alternative to other alignment techniques and may even be preferable in
certain cases
Positional Concerns across Generations
JEL Classifications: C60; C90Socio-economic comparisons (relative or positional concerns) have several implications for
utility, poverty, and economic development. This paper contributes to a small but growing
literature by investigating the intergenerational persistence of positional concerns in urban
Ethiopia, one of the world’s poorest countries. Using a series of survey experiments, we elicit
the degree of positionality for various goods with different characteristics: (i) material versus
non-material and (ii) visible versus non-visible. Our results suggest that the positional
concerns of parents significantly explain children’s level of positionality. The positional concerns
are transmitted to children mainly by the positional preferences of their mothers. Our
results are robust to alternative checks, including estimators and omitted variables. We also
analyze potential transmission channels. We identify gender – stronger between mothers and
daughters – and assortative mating of parents – stronger among parents married through love
marriage – as the primary mechanisms underlying the observed transmission of positional
preferences. We also discuss the implications of our findings on development policy
From signs to meaning: Exploring University Students’ Communication in Collaborative Projects on Social Networking Sites
Purpose: This study aims to explore how university students communicate on social
networking sites (SNS) through visual signs such as emojis, stickers, and GIFs.
By applying socio-semiotic theory (Kress, 2003), it seeks to understand the
meaning-making processes involved in these interactions and address the gap in
knowledge regarding the role of visual signs in collaborative communication
among students.
Theory: The research is grounded in socio-semiotic theory, with a particular emphasis
on the process of visual sign-making. Signs are interpreted through various
modes of expression, including purpose-oriented, causality-conveying,
conceptual-cognitive complexity, and imagination and design-centric modes,
thereby highlighting the concept of multimodality.
Method: This thesis employs qualitative research methods, utilizing semi-structured
interviews within ten master's students to gather in-depth insights. An
abductive analysis is conducted, continuously integrating socio-semiotic theory
with the findings. Thematic analysis, following the framework outlined by
Braun and Clarke (2019; 2021), is used to identify key themes, supported by
systematic coding of the data.
Results: Emojis are used more frequently than stickers and GIFs, serving to enhance the
meaning of written text while also conveying messages independently,
provided they are understood within the context. They effectively express
emotions, such as appreciation or anger, and can also foster creativity,
indicating curiosity. When students use these visual signs in response to peers,
the tone tends to be more straightforward, primarily aimed at ensuring mutual
understanding
assessment of quantification accuracy and precision
This thesis aims to develop, validate, and evaluate methods for accurate and precise image-based kidney dosimetry in patients with neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) treated with [177Lu]Lu-DOTATATE. Special focus is placed on quantifying and reducing uncertainties in kidney dose estimation. In paper I, an automatic segmentation method for the whole kidney parenchyma (WKP) was developed using a convolutional neural network (CNN). The CNN-based segmentation demonstrated performance comparable to manual (CT-based) segmentation, with a strong correlation in activity concentration measurements (r > 0.96, p < 0.01) indicating its suitability as an alternative for clinical dosimetry workflows. In paper II, the small-volume-of-interest (SV) method was optimized by adjusting VOI size and increasing the number of VOIs per kidney. This reduced dose estimation uncertainty from 14% when using a single 4 mL SV to 8.3% when using five 2 mL SVs, compared to the WKP method used as the reference. Papers II & III established a clinically feasible routine for calculating patient-specific recovery coefficients (RCs) using Monte Carlo simulations, reducing RC-related uncertainty by up to 4% compared to the fixed RC of 0.85 recommended by EANM guidelines. Paper III quantified anatomical changes in kidney volume (up to 10.77%) during treatment due to amino acid infusion. These changes were shown to result in absorbed dose overestimation of up to 2.5% when a single-timepoint CT segmentation was propagated across serial SPECT scans. In paper IV, a novel framework was introduced that uses an empirical power-law model to quantify the accuracy of WKP-based kidney dosimetry using SV data. The model demonstrated a relative precision of 7.27% for 2 mL SV and 6.92% for 0.6 mL SVs.
In conclusion, this work presents a systematic evaluation of image-based kidney dosimetry methods, identifying key sources of uncertainty and demonstrating how they can be mitigated through optimized VOI strategies, patient-specific recovery correction, and CNN-based segmentation. A quantitative framework for estimating relative accuracy was also introduced, supporting the development of robust and clinically feasible dosimetry practices for individualized molecular radiotherapy in NET patients
Management of Specialized Packaging Challenges for Lithium-Ion Batteries - A Case Study on Volvo Group Trucks Technology’s Prototype Process
MSc in Logistics and Transport ManagementThe rapid growth of the Electric Vehicle (EV) sector, coupled with ongoing electrification efforts, underscores the critical importance of Lithium-ion Batteries (LIBs) and the necessity for specialized packaging to ensure their effective management. Despite the significance of LIBs, the literature reveals a research gap within the Automotive Development Process (ADP), particularly in managing specialized packaging for LIBs in prototype processes. This thesis addressed this gap by examining the challenges associated with specialized packaging in the automotive prototype context, identified those specifically relevant to LIBs, and explored the integration of 20 Lean Tools to manage these challenges. Using a case study research design, data were collected within Volvo Group Trucks Technology (GTT), through three rounds of expert inputs, comprising individual interviews, a focus group discussion, and a survey. Analysis of the collected interview data revealed 24 challenges related to specialized packaging, which were categorized into four distinct themes: Organizational, Planning, Logistical & Operational, and Safety & Quality. Through analysis of the focus group discussion, 13 challenges were identified within the four themes, as applicable to LIB specialized packaging and subsequently formed the foundation of the survey. Furthermore, the application of the Ordinal Priority Approach (OPA) to the survey data enabled identification of Lean Tools appropriate for addressing the four identified themes of challenges. The results demonstrated that Lean Tools, with particular emphasis on Standardized Work, exhibited broad applicability across all themes and received the highest relative prioritization. Lastly, the analysis contributed to the establishment of a structured method to facilitate the implementation of these tools in the management of specialized packaging within the studied prototype process. Policyarbete i fritidens gränsland: Om förebyggande insatser för barn och unga i den urbana periferin.
Preventive interventions targeting children and young people in marginalised urban neighbourhoods have gained growing political attention in recent decades. This dissertation examines a municipal initiative seeking to improve the living conditions of children in the city’s disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The initiative, Meaningful Leisure, is designed to provide free, organised leisure activities during after-school hours for children aged 10–12. In the neighbourhood of Stensöta, Meaningful Leisure has taken the form of a municipality-led partnership network of local sports clubs, national organisations, and study associations that jointly plan and organise children’s leisure time. The overall aim of this thesis is to explore the policy processes through which leisure is organised within Meaningful Leisure. Drawing on 20 months of ethnographic fieldwork and informed by Policy Enactment Theory, the work of the partnership network is understood through the concept of policy work. In this perspective, organised leisure for Stensöta’s children is shaped through processes of interpretation and translation, where policy is put into action. The findings show that creating organised leisure in Stensöta is a complex and contested process.
The network’s meetings reveal struggles over meaning concerning leisure, the children involved, and practitioners working with them. Stensöta’s position as a disadvantaged neighbourhood shapes what is possible for the network to do, influenced by prevailing ideas of “good” leisure and by politically conditioned funding. Power and resistance become visible in these policy processes, particularly when the children do not participate in the after-school activities as expected. The policy work also reveals what in the dissertation is conceptualised as a profession of leisure. Here, the youth workers involved in Meaningful Leisure are positioned as key actors in shaping and sustaining the organised activities. The dissertation further underscores the importance of allowing children and young people to influence the activities they take part in. It problematises preventive interventions in marginalised urban neighbourhoods, contributes to broader debates on children’s living conditions, and illuminates the significance of professional social and pedagogical work during children’s leisure time
Teachers’ Views of Cultural Factors Impacting Secondary Education for Girls in Punjab, Pakistan.
Education is a key driver of social and economic progress; yet, in rural Punjab, Pakistan, girls' access to education is significantly hindered by cultural, societal, and familial barriers. This study, from teachers’ perspectives, examines teachers’ views on the challenges faced by female students in continuing secondary education, focusing on traditional gender norms, household responsibilities, early marriage expectations, and economic constraints. Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews reveals teachers believe that girls are often prioritized for domestic work and early marriage, which limits their educational opportunities. Additionally teachers reported that societal perceptions devalue girls' education, while economic pressures lead families to prioritize boys' education. The teachers in this study describe employing strategies such as mentorship programs, community engagement, and creating safe spaces within schools to combat these barriers and encourage girls to remain in school. Teachers in this study emphasized the need for professional development in gender-sensitive teaching practices to better support female students. Additionally, they highlighted the importance of receiving more resources and training to effectively address the cultural and economic barriers impacting girls' education
Psychometric Properties of the Swedish Version of the Child-Post-Traumatic Cognitions Inventory

Exploring minority social worker’s interactions with minority families in the Norwegian child welfare system.
This research investigates the experiences of social workers with ethnic minority backgrounds
working within the Norwegian child welfare system (CWS) concerning their interactions with
children and families from ethnic minority backgrounds. The study aims to understand how
these social workers perceive and navigate working within the CWS in relation to certain
values and understanding of minority families.
Qualitative interviews were conducted with social workers from minority backgrounds,
employed in the CWS in Oslo, Norway. The research employed thematic analysis to identify
recurring patterns, sections, and subsections in the data, drawing on theoretical frameworks
considering intersectionality, organizational theory, and finally, professional knowledge and
identity, which are not necessary learned from a person’s culture, but from their experiences.
The findings reveal a diverse range of motivations, suggestions, perspectives, and approaches
among social workers in the CWS. This research sheds light on the complex dynamics
involved in the interactions between social workers from minority backgrounds and minority
families in the Norwegian CWS. It highlights the importance of cultural awareness and
professional identity in terms of the social work professions and identifying as minorities. In
shaping these interactions, it is essential for social workers to navigate and consider the
unique cultural backgrounds of the children and families they serve
