Exploring the Link Between Climate Variability and Conflict in Mali: The Moderating Role of Household Food Insecurity
MSc in EconomicsAs global climate change intensifies, extreme weather events pose a growing challenge to social stability. Focusing on Mali, a highly agriculture-dependent and ecologically fragile African country, this paper explores whether and how climate variability raises the risk of conflict by exacerbating household food insecurity. A multi-source microdata set is constructed, combining high-resolution climate grid data, conflict event data and household questionnaires, and structural equation modelling (SEM) is used to empirically test the causal pathways of ‘climate-food insecurity-conflict’.
The results show that moderate precipitation anomalies significantly mitigate food insecurity and indirectly reduce the risk of conflict, while high temperature anomalies increase the medium-term probability of conflict by exacerbating food insecurity (3-9 months lag). In contrast, the direct effect of climate variables on conflict is insignificant, suggesting a central mediating role for the food system in this mechanism. Robustness tests using maize price as a proxy variable and verifying the statistical significance of the mediating effect through the Bootstrap method further support the robustness of the study's findings.
This study contributes to the identification of theoretical mechanisms, methodological model innovations, and regional empirical analyses, highlighting the importance of conflict prevention in fragile ecological regions from the perspective of the agricultural system, and providing useful references for policymakers on food security, climate adaptation, and peacebuilding
Navigating Talent Management - Exploring Attraction and Retention Among Recent Graduates in Swedish Management Consulting Firms Master
This study explores how leadership styles and motivational factors influence talent attraction and retention among recent graduates in Swedish management consulting firms. In the context of dynamic labor markets with constant transformation and changing preferences among generations, the study investigates the roles of Transformational and Transactional Leadership, combined with intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, with Self-Determination Theory and Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory as theoretical framework. This is done with a qualitative method, using semi-structured interviews with recent graduates employed in consulting firms of various sizes. The study revealed that meaningful work, flexible conditions, and supportive leadership are central components to retaining talent. The findings also show that transformational leadership and intrinsic motivation foster an environment of long-term engagement, while transactional approaches may lead to short-term performance, not suitable for effective talent attraction and retention. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of generational expectations and offers practical insights for firms aiming to adapt their talent management strategies to changing demands
Överflödskvinnor: Identitet, ideal och kvinnlig imperialism i viktorianska kvinnoemigrationssällskap 1862-1919
This thesis examines the systematic mass-emigration of unmarried British women through what was known as women’s emigration societies in Great Britain between the years 1862-1919. These organizations were active for a number of decades under the supervision of a number of educated women, who came to be well regarded for their work. My aim is to analyze the ideological motivations that allowed for these women’s emigration societies to maintain their relevance and activities throughout the decades, as well as the manner in which these societies interacted with and strategically made use of existing Victorian discourses regarding gender, class and separate spheres for feminine and masculine work in order to maintain their reputations as respectable philanthropic women’s organizations. Applying the lens of postcolonial and feminist theories, such as Homi Bhabha’s theory of cultural mimicry and Trinh T. Minh-ha’s analyses of power regarding migration, this thesis will present the similarities between historically discursive representations of the so-called ‘superfluous women’ and the colonies they were exported to. I will also argue for a connection between the increasingly popular conception of separate sex spheres as a sign of the progress of civilization and the discourse surrounding women’s superfluity
Sustainability Signals and Market Reactions: ESG and IPO Underpricing Across Legal Jurisdictions
MSc in FinanceThe relationship between Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments and IPO underpricing across legal jurisdictions was investigated. Using a cross-sectional dataset of 692 IPOs between 2015 and 2025, the study examined whether firms with stronger ESG profiles experienced lower underpricing and whether this effect varied between Common Law and Civil Law countries. Based in theories of asymmetric information and signaling, the analysis employed multiple OLS regression models with robustness checks for multicollinearity and nonlinearity. The findings showed a statistically significant inverted U-shaped relationship between ESG scores and IPO underpricing. This might imply that while low ESG engagement may coincide with higher underpricing, firms with high ESG commitments were associated with reduced first-day returns. The effect of legal jurisdiction was significant, with common law systems associated with higher levels of underpricing. Furthermore, the interaction terms with ESG and Legal jurisdiction provided additional support for the inverted U-shaped relationship. The results contribute to the literature on sustainable finance and market signaling, offering new insights for policymakers, issuers and investors regarding the valuation of ESG commitments in global capital markets
The Desire for a Bridge - The Transition Process from Child to Adult Psychiatry, a Systematic Literature Review
Background: The amount of young people treated for mental illness in Sweden has doubled from 2010 to 2023. Child and adolescent psychiatry and adult psychiatry differ in terms of services and organization. There are no national guidelines for the remittance process, but there are at regional level. There are few studies about this transition in the Swedish context. Meleis transition theory states several aspects that are relevant in transition. The nurse can provide support and help patients prepare for the transition.
Aim: The aim is to explore patients’ experiences of the transition from child and adolescent psychiatry to adult psychiatry.
Method: Systematic Literature Review of 10 Qualitative Studies. Data analysis was performed according to the nine steps of data analysis described by Bettany-Saltikov and McSherry (2016)
Results: Main themes and several sub-themes were identified. The main theme Growing up includes the subthemes Identity and Independence and support. The main theme Guided by care includes the subthemes Treatment and caring relationship, Good transition and Patients' vision. The main theme Left to their fate includes the subthemes Unprepared and Barriers and obstacles. Conclusion: A transition program with the aim of creating a gradual transition between child and youth psychiatry to adult psychiatry would contribute to increased feeling of safety. The authors see both opportunities and obstacles with such a transition program. Regardless, increased collaboration between child and youth psychiatry and adult psychiatry is needed. The need for future research is follow-up on how the outcome was after the transition, the experience of the transition in Sweden and designing and testing a transfer program.
Sexual health in the shadow of gynecological cancer – factors shaping nurses communication
Background: For women with gynecological cancer, sexual health is often affected. Nurses should promote the patient's health through a holistic approach, where sexual health is included. Person-centered care is an approach that encourages the patient's involvement and partnership, including matters related to sexual health. Despite this, conversations about sexual health are often lacking in healthcare, which can negatively impact women's quality of life and sexual well-being.
Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the factors that shapes nurses' conversations about sexual health with patients diagnosed with gynecological cancer.
Method: Systematic litterature review according to Bettany-Saltikov & McSherry (2016).
Results: The results show that a trusting and person-centered relationship between nurses and patient is essential for discussing sexual health in a respectful manner. These conversations are influenced by cultural norms, preconceived notions and organizational barriers, such as time constraints, lack of private spaces for disscusion and unclear role distributions. The study highlights a clear need for improved education and support for nurses to ensure that sexual health is adressed and that patients receive the information and support they need.
Conclusion: Nurses working in gynecological cancer care need better education and support to initiate conversations about sexual health. Person-centered care is essential for creating a safe and supportive environment for patients. Additionally, effective implementation of these conversations requires improved organizational conditions, sufficient time and a clear role distribution within the healthcare team.
WHAT ART CAN DO - LEARNING WITH ART AS A PROCESS OF COLLECTIVE REPAIR AND FUTURE MAKING IN TIMES OF CONFLICT AND RECONSTRUCTION
Aim:
To investigate how Syrian artistic practices (SAP), developed during and after
the conflict, afford resilience and contribute to informal sustainability education
in transitional contexts.
Theory:
Affordance Theory and Resilience Theory are used to illuminate how AP enable
learning, adaptation, and collective repair. AT is used to analyze the action
possibilities embedded in AP; RT frames these practices as cultural
infrastructures that sustain communities through disruption. Together, they offer
an understanding of art as a site of meaning-making, resistance, and future oriented sustainability learning.
Method:
A qualitative, case study methodology informed by arts-based inquiry was
employed to analyze seven Syrian artistic initiatives. The research drew on
visual and textual data from digital archives, artist media, and public
documentation. A tripartite analytical framework, Artistic Affordances →
Resilience Pathways → ESD Learning Potentials, guided the analysis. The study
integrates reflexivity and ethical sensitivity throughout, recognizing the
political, affective, and representational dimensions of research in post-conflict
settings.
Results:
The analysis reveals that SAP afford multiple, overlapping modes of
transformation. Materially, they repurpose scarcity into symbolic acts of
reclamation. Socially, they create communal spaces for storytelling, care, and
intergenerational learning. Epistemically, they sustain alternative, culturally
rooted ways of knowing. Pedagogically, these practices align with ESD by
fostering experiential, affective, and critically engaged learning. Collectively,
they function as infrastructures of resilience and informal education in times of
rupture and reconstruction
THE EFFECTS OF REINDEER GRAZING ON MYCELIAL BIOMASS IN THE OROARCTIC
Climate warming is driving increased vegetation growth and shifts in species composition in tundra regions, which may also lead to changes in mycorrhizal communities. An increase in deciduous shrubs has been observed, however, several studies suggest that herbivores can limit this expansion. This study investigates how reindeer grazing affects mycelial biomass using an exclosure experiment at two Oroarctic sites: Kilpisjärvi (Finland) and Ritsem (Sweden). Ingrowth mesh bags filled with sand have been incubated into the soil at the sites with various incubation times, spanning from one growing season length to two years plus growing season length. The dominant vegetation at these sites includes deciduous shrubs, evergreen ericaceous shrubs, and graminoids. And the main mycorrhizal types, analysed from soil samples, are ectomycorrhiza (ECM), arbuscular mycorrhiza AM and a small proportion of ericoid mycorrhiza (ERM).
Mycelial biomass was estimated using two methods: ergosterol extraction (a fungal-specific biomarker) and loss on ignition (LOI). Results show higher mycelial biomass in exclosure plots compared to grazed (ambient) plots at both Kilpisjärvi and Ritsem, with a statistically significant treatment effect at Ritsem. These findings suggest that reindeer grazing can suppress mycorrhizal growth.
Changes in mycorrhizal composition may also affect soil carbon dynamics. While the expansion of deciduous shrubs could increase above ground carbon storage due to enhanced plant productivity, their associated ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi are suggested to have a faster turnover rate than the ericoid mycorrhizal (ERM) fungi that dominate evergreen shrub systems. A shift from evergreen to deciduous vegetation may lead to increased soil carbon respiration and decreasing soil C storage
Digitaliseringens påverkan på retentionsstrategier inom M&A
This study examines how digitalization affects retention strategies for key personnel in the
context of mergers and acquisitions (M&A). In light of digitalization’s growing importance
in working life, a qualitative and exploratory study was conducted based on interviews with
eleven individuals with extensive experience in transactions, integration, and serial acquisitions
in a Swedish setting. The study shows that digitalization is changing the conditions
for retaining key personnel, partly through new ways of working and increased demands for
technical competence. Remote and hybrid work can contribute to key personnel staying by
offering greater flexibility, but may also make it more difficult to foster a sense of community
and shared culture. Financial incentives remain an important strategy for retaining key
personnel post M&A. Furthermore, key personnel increasingly demand leadership that fosters
security and trust in a digital work environment. The study also reveals that technical
systems enable faster integration and more efficient information flows in connection with
M&A, but key personnel simultaneously place new demands on both the organization’s and
the individual’s digital competence. This is something that needs to be adapted to in order
to retain key personnel in an increasingly digitalized world.
Keywords: Mergers and Acquisitions, M&A, Digitalization, Retention Strategies, Key Personnel,
Remote Work, Integration, Corporate TransactionsDenna studie undersöker hur digitalisering påverkar retentionsstrategier för nyckelpersoner i
Exploring the genetics of hereditary cancer, with a focus on colorectal cancer
Hereditary cancer syndromes are characterized by an inherited genetic predisposition that increases an individual's risk of developing specific types of cancer. Hereditary cancer accounts for about 5-10 % of all cancer cases, and most hereditary cancer syndromes follow an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern. The genetic mecha-nisms underlying predisposition to hereditary cancer syndromes include errors in tu-mor suppressor genes, DNA repair genes, oncogenes and other genes involved in cellu-lar processes.
This thesis aimed to enhance diagnostic yield and advance understanding of the ge-netics underlying hereditary cancer syndromes, with a specific focus on hereditary colorectal cancer, through the application of novel technologies and AI-integrated analysis.
Applying next-generation sequencing and broad gene panels led to the identification of pathogenic variants in novel genes, POLE and GREM1, which now are established as high risk genes for hereditary colorectal cancer. We also found that bi-allelic non-sense variants in MLH3 give rise to colorectal cancer. The investigation of genotype-phenotype relationships across different types of hereditary cancer syndromes re-vealed overlapping manifestations between syndromes, suggesting broader gene pan-els in clinical diagnostics. Families with a pattern of hereditary colorectal cancer sur-prisingly harbored pathogenic variants in genes BRCA1 and RAD51C, primarily asso-ciated with hereditary breast- and ovarian cancer. Additionally, we quantified the transcript level from promoter 1B of the APC gene. Significantly lower expression levels were observed in patients with sporadic colorectal cancer compared to healthy individuals.
In conclusion, combining advanced sequencing with AI-driven analysis improves the handling of large genomic datasets, enhancing detection, classification, and interpre-tation of variants in hereditary cancer syndromes. In addition, the transcript level generated from promoter 1B of the APC gene is proposed as a biomarker for early detection of colorectal cancer
