Exploring language development of multilingual learners through parents’ and teachers’ accounts in an international school
This study focuses on the perspectives of parents and teachers on mainly the challenges multilingual learners encounter, the opportunities available to the latter and the crucial roles of these stakeholders (parents and teachers), in their interactions with the language development trajectories of the learners. The increasing prevalence of international schools have led to a growing population of students who, due to geographical mobility, must adapt to new educational environments, which include learning and development of skills in additional languages. While many of these learners speak multiple languages, they are still often required to acquire the dominant language of their host community, navigating complex sociolinguistic, linguistic, educational, cultural, physical, emotional, and metalinguistic challenges. Grounded in Lev Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory (SCT) and Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and other frameworks linked to the former theory, these concepts underscore the significance of social interactions and cultural integration in learning and language development. This research employs a generative qualitative approach. Through semi-structured interviews, parents and teachers provide valuable insights and accounts into the experiences of multilingual learners, highlighting the necessity of collaboration between educators and families. The findings underpin the significance of the need for continuous professional development for educators and affirm the widespread recognition of multilingualism as an asset that should be actively preserved and nurtured
Application of hydrogen peroxide photolysis for reduction of cariogenic biofilm activity
Dental caries is a multifactorial disease, and cariogenic biofilms play a crucial role in lesion development. Therefore, managing cariogenic biofilms is essential, and the development of novel and effective antimicrobial methods to reduce biofilm activity is desirable for caries management. Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) photolysis generates hydroxyl radicals, which kill bacteria through oxidative activity. Since previous studies have suggested the potential application of H₂O₂ photolysis in caries management, this series of studies aimed to broaden knowledge about its effectiveness as a new caries management method.
In Studies I, II, and III (in vitro experiments), H₂O₂ photolysis demonstrated strong antimicrobial effect against S. mutans biofilms and an inhibitory effect on tooth demineralization, using various samples, including hydroxyapatite discs, extracted rat teeth, and bovine dentin. Moreover, the antimicrobial activity of H₂O₂ photolysis was found to be greater than that of conventional antiseptics and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy. Study IV (an ex vivo experiment) revealed that H₂O₂ photolysis exerted antimicrobial effects against in vivo dental biofilms collected from volunteers identified as at increasing risk of dental caries. In addition, the technique did not affect the level of biofilm regrowth or its bacterial composition after treatment. These findings across all four studies suggest that this technique reduces biofilm activity regardless of its composition.
In conclusion, this series of studies expands understanding of the potential of H₂O₂ photolysis as a new caries management strategy, highlighting its antimicrobial properties
Delta 3D-Printer
This thesis shows step by step the building process of a delta 3D
printer. The main parts covered are the frame, stepper motors, a
printing platform (heat bed), a hot end, moving sleds (carriages), extruder,
power source, electronics and printing material. It also covers
what kind of timing belt is the best choice and why the tightness of
the belt is important. The project has been divided into three parts;
modeling, controlling the printer and a mechanical section. The build
phase was planned in advance but observations was made during the
building of the printer that resulted in new ideas, new parts and improvements
Between prevention and repression. The construction of preventive work in Swedish Social Policy discourse – a discourse analysis
The following study examines how preventive work is constructed within contemporary Swedish social policy discourse, focusing on the underlying ideologies affecting the construction. The study explores how preventive measures are represented in relation to youth criminality and stricter sanctions through a discourse analysis of the three government policy documents: Ju förr desto bättre- vägar till en förebyggande socialtjänst (2018), Proposition-Säkerhetszoner(2023) and Särpta regler om ungdomsövervakning och starffreduktion för unga (2024). The analysis is guided by Bacchi’s What’s the problem represented to be? (WPR) approach and Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse analysis. The findings reveal significant variation in how preventive work is constructed depending on which document is explored. One of the documents frames preventive work within a Swedish welfare-based, social democratic perspective, emphasizing long-term and structural measures. While the two others associate prevention with repressive, controlling security measures with a punitive populistic and neoliberal focus. Additionally, preventive work is in the study identified as an empty signifier, making it a powerful political tool for legitimizing different policy agendas. The analysis furthermore highlights the increasing influence of punitive populism in Swedish penal and social policy, especially when it comes to responding to the described increase in youth criminality. The study concludes with the point that although preventive work is framed as a progressive concept and the answer to social problems such as youth criminality, there is a clear increase in the use of the term to justify repressive and control-oriented measures. This raises concern regarding the balance between social protection, individual rights and public security
Space Entropy: Emergent narrative through systemic game design
This thesis explored emergent narrative techniques in game design and attempted to explain what is needed to create the potential for emergence in a game. Emergent narrative refers to stories that arise organically from player interaction with the game’s systems rather than being pre-scripted. Literature review and research showed many different ways in which unique narrative can emerge from systems in all kinds of games and research prototypes. Based on collected information from previous work on the topic, we developed our own prototype game, named Space Entropy, to test narrative emergence through systemic design with users in a first-person, sandbox game in a Sci-Fi setting. In this prototype, we utilized some of the techniques that we found most appropriate for our case. From the quantitative and qualitative data gathered from the playtests, we were able to establish the validity of the prototype as well as identify its weaknesses. Finally, our findings led us to formulate a set of guidelines aimed at other developers or teams that want to achieve unexpected, emergent narrative without explicitly designing for it
ENDOMETRIOS.
Resultat: Resultatet presenteras i tre huvudkategorier
följt av subkategorier. 1) Att känna sig ifrågasatt och misstrodd. Subkategorier: att få sina
symptom trivialiserade och att mötas med oförståelse. 2) Att sakna inflytande. Subkategorier:
Navigating Child Marriage in Vietnam; An Ethnographic Case Study on Social Expectations, Cultural Norms, and Local Adaptations of Child Marriage in Ban Luoc, Ha Giang
In the remote highlands of northern Vietnam, child marriage remains culturally embedded
among ethnic minority communities, despite legal reforms and awareness campaigns. This
ethnographic case study explores how child marriage is justified, perceived, and navigated in
Ban Luoc commune, through three questions:
1. 2. 3. How is child marriage justified or normalised despite efforts to reduce it?
How do community members navigate social, legal, and cultural expectations?
How is child marriage perceived and distinguished from legal marriage or
cohabitation?
Drawing on social norms theory, cultural relativism, and symbolic interactionism, the analysis
reveals that child marriage is seen not as a legal violation but as a culturally rooted practice
shaped by love, social expectation, and family duty. Practices like cohabitation, delayed
registration, and engagement are used to balance local norms with legal constraints.
Gendered expectations also place a significant burden on girls, who often face disrupted
education, teenage pregnancies, and limited autonomy. While state policies define child
marriage through age and consent, local communities interpret it through terms like qua lại
(side-to-side visiting) and engagement, which reflect different symbolic meanings.
The findings highlight the gap between global human rights standards and local realities. This
study argues for culturally sensitive approaches to addressing child marriage, rooted in an
understanding of how international norms are interpreted and adapted in specific cultural
settings. It contributes to the broader discussion on how global norms are negotiated in local
contexts
The Benevolent Border - Humanitarianism and Absurdity in European Migration Law
In recent years, a number of humanitarian measures have been implemented within European migration law. Under the prevailing securitizing discourse surrounding migrants, they are often portrayed as young, healthy men seeking to dominate the ‘weak’ within their own communities (e.g., women, children, LGBT individuals, and the elderly). This dissertation examines how European states treat those depicted as victimized or vulnerable in such narratives. It analyzes three case studies in which humanitarian concern for these groups has influenced migration management. The first case explores the categorization of ‘vulnerable’ asylum seekers at EU hotspots, which creates certain exceptions to the externalized border regime. The second investigates the credibility assessment of sexual orientation in LGB asylum cases, focusing on the DSSH model and the increasing emphasis on shame and internalized homophobia. The third examines the situation of undocumented domestic workers and how their exploitation is systematically overlooked by state authorities. In all three case studies, efforts to humanize migration procedures are ultimately cancelled or distorted. This dissertation applies absurdity as a theoretical lens to analyze the tensions that emerge and to show how humanitarian measures become incompatible with the underlying border rationality that defines this area of law. It further explores how the practices described reflect both postcolonial and conservative understandings of care. As demonstrated, attempts to implement humanitarian care in European migration law often end up privileging the 'exceptional' migrant at the expense of others. Moreover, power and accountability are rendered invisible, as European states are cast in the role of benevolent helpers under this narrative
