The Alpine vegetation of the Pyrenees, a contrasting assemblage of plant communities, life strategies, and biogeographic sources
The alpine vegetation is frequently characterized as landscape mosaics where contrasting plant communities in terms of species composition and functional structure are set responding to abrupt changes through rough physiography. In this paper, we analyse the vegetation of the alpine belt of the Catalan and Andorran Pyrenees combining its phytosociological description with the assessment of functional plant traits. Our aim is to build a comprehensive framework for analysing the relationship between plant cover and environment, and thus for understanding plant diversity through the varying alpine landscapes. For this purpose we used 800 releves gathered in a vegetation databank which have been classified into 46 community-types (associations). Then we have characterized the associations assessing the most frequent plant species by means of a wide scope of traits, summarized at the releve level, and then at the association level. Most of the community-types assessed reflect the distinct stressing conditions found in alpine environments. In dense grassland types, however, better ecological conditions (fair soils, gentle reliefs) are evidenced by higher competitive ability and above-ground turnover of the dominant species. These community-types show moderate diversity in terms of plant functional types and particular species. More stressing conditions give way to poorer community-types, because only a few specialized plants can thrive in one or another distinct habitat. However, this vegetation includes more singular species in the biogeographic aspect (i.e., endemics) and also as plant functional types (e.g., succulents, small cushions, semelparous). A particular vegetation group, the alpine heaths, reflect the local fitness of a few woody species able to drive the rest of plant community and the ecosystem functioning. There is still a lack of knowledge on the actual effect of grazing on the relative role played in contemporary landscapes by alpine heaths and grasslands
Readings in the Philosophy of Language, 1964), J. R. Searle (The philosophy of language, 1971) y G. Grewendorf y G. Meggle (Linguistik und Philosophie, 1974). Abstract This paper describes the relationship between Linguistics and Philosophy of language, and it interprets the choice made by axiomatic Linguistics of Analytic Philosophy of the ideal language, from a variety of options. The paper reviews the major contributions of the past fifty years of Philosophy of language. They are compilations edited by KA Fodor and JJ Katz (The Structure of Language. Readings in the Philosophy of Language, 1964), Searle JR (The philosophy of language, 1971) and G. and G. Grewendorf Meggle (Linguistik und Philosophie, 1974) . It also takes into account the works of M. Bunge (Linguistics and Philosophy, 1983), J. Ferrater Mora (Inquiries about language, 1970) and E. Lledó (Philosophy and Language, 1970). The opening the election of Linguistics to Analytic Philosophy of the ideal language has led to the rejection of disciplines such as Analytic Philosophy of ordinary language, Hermeneutics and Pragmatism. The Philosophy of ordinary language theorizes about speech acts, Hermeneutics deals with the historical consciousness and Pragmatism is the application of philosophy to social life. The thesis of this study is that Lingusitics can grow with a inclusive Philosophy of language, open to multiple flows, to the historicity, to diversity of canon and to critical praxis
Twenty years, eight legs, one concept: describing spider biodiversity in Zootaxa (Arachnida: Araneae)
Zootaxa published more than a thousand papers on Araneae from 2002 to the present, including descriptions of 3,833 new spider species and 177 new genera. Here we summarise the key contributions of Zootaxa to our current knowledge of global spider diversity. We provide a historical account of the researchers that have actively participated as editors, and recognize the more than 1,000 reviewers without whom none of this would have been possible. We conduct a simple analysis of the contributions by authors and geographic region, which allows us to uncover some of the underlying trends in current spider taxonomy. In addition, we examine some of the milestones in twenty years of spider systematic research in Zootaxa. Finally, we discuss future prospects of spider taxonomy and the role that Zootaxa and its younger sister journal Megataxa will play in it. We would like to dedicate this contribution to the memory of Norman I. Platnick, a crucial figure in the advancement of spider systematics
organizaciones locales y movimientos urbanos
Lanthanide molecules for spin-based quantum technologies
Since the molecular electronic spin emerged as one of the promising technologies to implement the quantum processing of information, coordination complexes of lanthanides and actinides have become protagonists as suitable molecular realizations of qubits and qugates. In this chapter, we revise the most recent developments on the production of rare earth (RE) based qubits, qugates and most recently qudits, which also make use of the nuclear spin degrees of freedom to encode and process quantum information. Essential concepts such as the spin relaxation and the phase memory times in these systems are described, as well as the development of multiqubit molecular systems for the realization of basic quantum gate operations. The most advanced achievements consisting on the realization of the Grover algorithm or the demonstration of a quantum error correction protocol constitute the culmination of this chapter, which concludes with the challenges yet lying ahead for implementing the molecular spin as an essential component of quantum computin
In its configuration, the autonomic model protects the existence of structural differences among communities. These differences are due to structural factors (history, language, symbols, territory organization) which, at the same time, cause unevenness between autonomous communities. These aren’t only peculiarities or distinguishing features in the general autonomic system, because some of them are decisive to explain the existence of that automy. All these identifying and distinguishing elements are gathered in the preliminary title of the new Catalonia’s Statute of Autonomy (2006) and also, in other institutional and competence provisions that are a consequence of the first. These provisions concern in the one hand, certain specialities in the internal organizational and institutional catalan system, but also in the system of provisions distribution. But according to the Constitutional Court, this doesn’t imply any type of inequality among communities. This allows to represent Catalonia through some specific national symbols (flag, national day and hymn) which might have the same juridical protection as the spanish symbols. Or through historical catalan rights which are the bases of the catalan self government and from which the recognition of a singular position of the La Generalitat in concret areas derives, as the civil code, language, culture and the institutional system. Also, it implies the establishment of a singular linguistic system
Emerging functions of myelin associated proteins during development neuronal plasticity and and neurpdegeneration.
Adult mammalian central nervous system (CNS) axons have a limited regrowth capacity following injury. Myelin-associated inhibitors (MAIs) limit axonal outgrowth and their blockage improves the regeneration of damaged fiber tracts. Three of these proteins, Nogo-A, MAG and OMgp, share two common neuronal receptors: NgR1, together with its co-receptors (p75(NTR), TROY and Lingo-1), and the recently described paired immunoglobulin-like receptor B (PirB). These proteins impair neuronal regeneration by limiting axonal sprouting. Some of the elements involved in the myelin inhibitory pathways may still be unknown, but the discovery that blocking both PirB and NgR1 activities leads to near-complete release from myelin inhibition, sheds light on one of the most competitive and intense fields of neuroregeneration study during in recent decades. In parallel with the identification and characterization of the roles and functions of these inhibitory molecules in axonal regeneration, data gathered in the field strongly suggest that most of these proteins have roles other than axonal growth inhibition. The discovery of a new group of interacting partners for myelin-associated receptors and ligands, as well as functional studies within or outside the CNS environment, highlights the potential new physiological roles for these proteins in processes such as development, neuronal homeostasis, plasticity and neurodegeneration
