Differential effects of polyphenols and alcohol of red wine on the expression of adhesion molecules and inflammatory cytokines related to atherosclerosis: a randomized clinical trial
Background: Few clinical studies have focused on the alcoholindependent cardiovascular effects of the phenolic compounds of red wine (RW). Objective: We aimed to evaluate the effects of ethanol and phenolic compounds of RW on the expression of inflammatory biomarkers related to atherosclerosis in subjects at high risk of cardiovascular disease. Design: Sixty-seven high-risk, male volunteers were included in a randomized, crossover consumption trial. After a washout period, all subjects received RW (30 g alcohol/d), the equivalent amount of dealcoholized red wine (DRW), or gin (30 g alcohol/d) for 4 wk. Before and after each intervention period, 7 cellular and 18 serum inflammatory biomarkers were evaluated. Results: Alcohol increased IL-10 and decreased macrophage-derived chemokine concentrations, whereas the phenolic compounds of RW decreased serum concentrations of intercellular adhesion molecule- 1, E-selectin, and IL-6 and inhibited the expression of lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1 in T lymphocytes and macrophage-1 receptor, Sialil-Lewis X, and C-C chemokine receptor type 2 expression in monocytes. Both ethanol and phenolic compounds of RW downregulated serum concentrations of CD40 antigen, CD40 ligand, IL-16, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1. Conclusion: The results suggest that the phenolic content of RW may modulate leukocyte adhesion molecules, whereas both ethanol and polyphenols of RW may modulate soluble inflammatory mediators in high-risk patients. The trial was registered in the International Standard Randomized Controlled Trial Number Register at http://www. isrctn.org/ as ISRCTN8872013
The High Court once again facing the interpretation of article 13 d) RD 1006/1985 of 26 June regulates the special employment relationship of professional sportsman. In this case is whether, despite the declaration of permanent incapacity of the professional athlete is given outside the contract of work, operates or not the special allowance under that provision for the case of disabling injury occurred during the exercise of professional sports where such failure operate to cause termination of employment
Multimodal input and L2 pragmatics: An eye-tracking study
Analyzing the effects of multimodal input in the acquisition of second/foreign language (L2) pragmatics is a recent area in research. In this line, the use of eye-tracking to investigate L2 pragmatics remains limited ( Godfroid, 2019 ). This study aimed to explore the effects of multimodal input on L2 requests among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, while monitoring them with a webcam eye-tracker. The study used a multiple-choice discourse completion test at pre and posttest to evaluate the effects of viewing audio-visual material with or without captions. Additionally, a subset of participants was interviewed regarding pragmatic perception. Findings indicate that participants exposed to captioned videos performed better in the posttest and relied on captions when viewing, a result corroborated by retrospective interviews
The Contest of Beauty and Sainthood: The Empress Bride as the Mirror of Perfection
This article deals with the accounts of the imperial bride-show on Byzantine hagiographical sources from the ninth and the tenth centuries. Putting aside the discussion on the historicity of such a ceremony, which is dubious, it identifies as its literary origin the account of the Book of Esther about the search of a new wife for King Artaxerxes and as its purpose the justification of the marriage of a saint empress to a heretical husband. It proposes to read as an actualisation of the so-called ‘novel of Esther’ the
narratives on the marriage of Theodosius II and Eudocia in Malalas’ Chronography (sixth century) and on the marriage of Theophilos and Theodora in the Life and encomium of Theodora (ninth century). The article also argues that the Life of Theodora could be the model for the other sources on this subject from the ninth century such as the Lives of St Philaretos, St Theophano and St Irene of Chrysobalanton, the Funeral
Oration for Basil I attributed to Leo VI and the accounts on Cassia as a contender in the event for the search of a bride for Theophilos
The spoken word, or the Prestige of Orality, in Lucian
In the bookish world of the Empire, the rules of orality not only remain intact, but oral speech outranks all other forms of self-presentation and affirmation among the elite pepaideumenoi. Lucian of Samosata, despite not being a conventional Sophist, demonstrates in his works that the prestige of orality in all of its forms—incorporation of oral tales, linguistic propriety in speaking, and performance—confers upon public speech the loftiness necessary to be worthy of its tradition.
My purpose in this paper is to demonstrate how all of these forms manifest themselves in Lucian’s work
New Challenges in the Theory of Grammaticalization. Evidence from the Rise of Spanish Counter-Argumentative Markers no obstante, no contrastante and no embargante*
The main aims of this paper are threefold. Firstly, we study the syntactic influence of Latin from a perspective not limited to the analysis of its interference in the Romance languages as a result of a direct linguistic contact. More specif-ically, we demonstrate that the influence of Latin may have occurred indirectly as a result of the contact among vernacular languages. Secondly, we analyze the role of analogy in explaining syntactic change
Unexpected grammaticalizations: The reanalysis of the Spanish verb ir 'to go' as a past marker
From a typological perspective, the evolution of a verb meaning ‘to go’ as a future tense marker is a common grammaticalization chain. The evolution of an allative verb as a past tense is much less expected, though documented. In modern Spanish, for instance, it exists a past marker formed by a coordinating structure: ir ‘to go’ + y ‘and’ + finite verbal group. The aim of this paper is to explore the motivations behind the grammaticalization process experienced by the Spanish structure ir ‘to go’ + y ‘and’ + finite verbal group as a past marker and as a quotative marker. We follow a usage-based approach to language change, combined with Grammaticalization and Diachronic Construction Grammar
