SPEAKING ANXIETY EXPERIENCE OF INDONESIAN ENGLISH FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNERS AT THE ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF UIN RADEN INTAN LAMPUNG
This study investigated the multifaceted nature of speaking anxiety among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners and sought to extract valuable insights from a student\u27s experiences in overcoming this challenge. Speaking anxiety is a pervasive issue, frequently rooted in a lack of confidence, which often manifests as embarrassment, fear, and a reluctance to demonstrate speaking proficiency, leading many students to remain silent in classroom settings. Employing a qualitative narrative inquiry approach, this research utilized personal stories as the primary data source. The participant was a single female student, identified as DK, enrolled in the 6th semester of the English Education Department at UIN Raden Intan Lampung. Data were meticulously collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and document analysis. The analytical process involved constructing the participant\u27s life narrative and interpreting the transcribed data using Clandinin and Caine\u27s three-dimensional narrative inquiry framework, encompassing the dimensions of time, social-personal interaction, and place. The findings revealed three distinct categories of anxiety experienced by the student: trait anxiety, situational-specific anxiety, and state anxiety. Additionally, past trauma was identified as a significant antecedent triggering speaking anxiety. A notable finding was the participant\u27s remarkable persistence and resilience in managing her anxiety, enabling her to maintain active engagement within both classroom and broader campus environments. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of speaking anxiety and offers valuable perspectives on coping mechanisms within the Indonesian EFL context.The objective of this research is to identify the types of anxiety experienced by students and to understand what others can learn from students\u27 experiences in overcoming speaking anxiety. Distinguishing Facts and Opinions: Enhancing Students’ Critical Reading Skills Using Pair Checks Method
This study investigates the effectiveness of the Pair Checks method in improving eleventh-grade students’ ability to distinguish between facts and opinions in discourse texts. Conducted through two cycles of Classroom Action Research (CAR), the study shows significant improvements in student performance, engagement, and collaboration. In Cycle I, students demonstrated moderate improvement in their ability to identify facts and opinions, with an average score increase from 63 to 74.44. However, challenges such as limited student engagement were addressed in Cycle II, leading to further enhancements, with the average score rising to 81.33 and 83.33% of students achieving the minimum competency level. Observational data revealed improved classroom behavior, increased participation, and reduced disruptions, demonstrating the positive impact of the method. The findings support the application of cooperative learning strategies in fostering critical thinking, analytical skills, and media literacy. This study highlights the value of iterative refinements in instructional methods and suggests that the Pair Checks method can be an effective tool for enhancing students’ reading comprehension and critical engagement with texts. Peran Literasi Budaya dalam Pembentukan Karakter Mahasiswa Calon Pendidik
This study examines the role of cultural literacy in character building among students of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Lakidende University, specifically within the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program. Cultural literacy, encompassing the understanding, appreciation, and application of local and national cultural values, is considered a crucial factor in shaping students’ character, particularly in the context of Indonesia’s cultural diversity. Employing a qualitative approach, this research integrates in-depth interviews, participant observations, and questionnaire distribution among students and lecturers to gain comprehensive insights. The findings reveal that cultural literacy significantly contributes to the development of integrity, ethical awareness, and tolerance among students in the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program. Students who are consistently exposed to cultural literacy demonstrate a deeper understanding of social and moral values and exhibit more positive behaviors in their daily interactions. Moreover, the integration of cultural literacy within the Educational Literacy course and the Tolaki Language and Culture course in the fifth semester reinforces students’ cultural identity and enhances their engagement in the learning process. This study underscores the necessity for higher education institutions in Indonesia to further integrate cultural literacy into the academic framework. Such an initiative not only fosters students\u27 cultural awareness and character development but also serves as a strategic effort to preserve cultural heritage in the face of globalization.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis peran literasi budaya dalam pembentukan karakter mahasiswa Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Lakidende, khususnya pada Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia. Literasi budaya, yang mencakup pemahaman, penghargaan, dan penerapan nilai-nilai budaya lokal serta nasional, dipandang sebagai faktor krusial dalam membentuk karakter mahasiswa, terutama dalam menghadapi keberagaman budaya di Indonesia. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, penelitian ini mengombinasikan wawancara mendalam, observasi partisipatif, serta penyebaran angket kepada mahasiswa dan dosen untuk memperoleh pemahaman yang komprehensif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa literasi budaya berkontribusi secara signifikan terhadap pembentukan karakter mahasiswa yang berintegritas, beretika, dan memiliki sikap toleran terhadap keberagaman budaya. Mahasiswa yang secara konsisten terpapar pada literasi budaya menunjukkan pemahaman yang lebih mendalam terhadap nilai-nilai sosial dan moral serta perilaku yang lebih positif dalam interaksi sehari-hari. Selain itu, integrasi literasi budaya dalam kurikulum, khususnya melalui mata kuliah Literasi Pendidikan dan Bahasa serta Kebudayaan Tolaki pada semester lima, tidak hanya memperkuat identitas budaya mahasiswa tetapi juga meningkatkan keterlibatan mereka dalam proses pembelajaran. Penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa perguruan tinggi di Indonesia perlu lebih mengintegrasikan literasi budaya dalam sistem pendidikan sebagai strategi untuk membentuk karakter mahasiswa yang kuat dan berwawasan budaya. Selain itu, upaya ini juga berperan dalam pelestarian budaya di tengah derasnya arus globalisasi
Kebiasaan Membaca Novel Bahasa Inggris dan Kemampuan Mahasiswa Menerjemahkan Teks Inggris-Indonesian: Studi korelasi
This research investigates the correlation between students’ habits of reading English novels and their ability to translate from English to Indonesian. A preliminary study involving 61 students revealed that 33 of them encountered difficulties in English-Indonesian translation, particularly in selecting appropriate vocabulary and constructing sentences that accurately convey the meaning of the original text. The study aims to determine whether a consistent habit of reading English novels influences translation proficiency among students. The research employed a correlational design and focused on fifth-semester students from the English Education Department at UIN Raden Intan Lampung. A sample of 61 students was selected randomly. Data collection involved a questionnaire with 20 items assessing students’ reading habits in English novels and a translation test to evaluate their proficiency in English-Indonesian translation. Statistical analysis using SPSS and the Pearson Product Moment formula indicated a significant positive correlation (rcount = 0.619, rtable = 0.248, N = 61, p < 0.05) between students’ reading habits and their translation abilities. This finding supports the hypothesis (Ha) that there exists a meaningful relationship between regular English novel reading habits and proficiency in English-Indonesian translation.Penelitian ini mengkaji korelasi antara kebiasaan membaca novel berbahasa Inggris dengan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menerjemahkan dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia. Studi pendahuluan yang melibatkan 61 mahasiswa menunjukkan bahwa 33 di antaranya mengalami kesulitan dalam menerjemahkan dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia, khususnya dalam memilih kosakata yang tepat dan menyusun kalimat yang mampu menyampaikan makna teks asli secara akurat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan apakah kebiasaan membaca novel berbahasa Inggris secara konsisten memengaruhi kemampuan penerjemahan mahasiswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain korelasional dan difokuskan pada mahasiswa semester lima di Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UIN Raden Intan Lampung. Sampel sebanyak 61 mahasiswa dipilih secara acak. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui kuesioner dengan 20 item yang mengukur kebiasaan membaca novel berbahasa Inggris serta tes penerjemahan untuk mengevaluasi kemampuan penerjemahan dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia. Analisis statistik menggunakan SPSS dan rumus Pearson Product Moment menunjukkan adanya korelasi positif yang signifikan (r_hitung = 0,619, r_tabel = 0,248, N = 61, p < 0,05) antara kebiasaan membaca mahasiswa dengan kemampuan penerjemahan mereka. Temuan ini mendukung hipotesis (Ha) bahwa terdapat hubungan yang bermakna antara kebiasaan membaca novel berbahasa Inggris secara teratur dengan kemampuan penerjemahan dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia
Conversational Implicatures in Bekisar Merah by Ahmad Tohari
This study examines conversational implicatures arising from violations of the cooperative principle in the novel Bekisar Merah by Ahmad Tohari. It analyzes and describes the types of conversational implicatures that emerge due to violations of Grice\u27s maxims within the cooperative principle. Theoretically, the findings of this study are expected to contribute to the development of pragmatic studies, particularly in understanding conversational implicatures in modern contexts. Practically, this research aims to provide insights into the use of conversational implicatures in verbal interactions. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The research data consist of character dialogues in the novel, collected through reading and note-taking techniques. The analysis results indicate that Bekisar Merah contains various forms of conversational implicatures resulting from violations of the four cooperative maxims: the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relevance, and the maxim of manner. From the analysis of 21 conversational data samples, it was found that violations of these maxims generate various implicatures that enrich the meaning of interactions between characters. This study is expected to serve as a reference for future research and inspire further studies on conversational implicatures, particularly those related to violations of the cooperative principle in literary works.Penelitian ini mengkaji implikatur percakapan yang muncul akibat pelanggaran prinsip kerja sama dalam novel Bekisar Merah karya Ahmad Tohari. Penelitian ini mengkaji dan mendeskripsikan jenis-jenis implikatur percakapan yang terjadi akibat pelanggaran terhadap maksim-maksim dalam prinsip kerja sama Grice. Secara teoritis, temuan penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi terhadap perkembangan kajian pragmatik, khususnya dalam memahami implikatur percakapan dalam konteks modern. Secara praktis, penelitian ini juga diharapkan dapat memberikan wawasan mengenai penggunaan implikatur percakapan dalam interaksi verbal. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Data penelitian berupa percakapan tokoh dalam novel yang dikumpulkan melalui teknik baca dan catat. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa dalam Bekisar Merah terdapat berbagai bentuk implikatur percakapan yang muncul akibat pelanggaran terhadap empat maksim kerja sama, yaitu maksim kuantitas, maksim kualitas, maksim relevansi, dan maksim cara. Dari analisis terhadap 21 data percakapan, ditemukan bahwa pelanggaran terhadap maksim-maksim tersebut menghasilkan berbagai implikatur yang memperkaya makna dalam interaksi antar tokoh. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menjadi referensi bagi penelitian selanjutnya serta menginspirasi kajian lebih lanjut mengenai implikatur percakapan, khususnya yang berkaitan dengan pelanggaran prinsip kerja sama dalam karya sastra
APLIKASI BOOK CREATOR: PENGARUHNYA TERHADAP KEMAMPUAN MAHASISWA MENULIS TEKS PROSEDUR
This study investigates the influence of employing the Book Creator application on the development of students\u27 writing abilities in composing procedural texts. Mastering the construction of procedural texts is a crucial skill for students, and Book Creator offers a potentially valuable tool to facilitate the clear and creative expression of their ideas. Employing a quasi-experimental design, this research examines the effect of Book Creator on the writing skills of eleventh-grade students at SMA N 1 Pasir Sakti. The target population comprised 302 students, from which two classes were selected through cluster random sampling: XI IPA 3 as the experimental group and XI IPS 3 as the control group, each consisting of 30 students. Pre-tests and post-tests served as the primary data collection instruments. Subsequent to normality and homogeneity testing of the data through SPSS v.24, an independent samples t-test was conducted. The results, with a significance level (p) of 0.003 (falling below the 0.05 alpha level), indicate that the utilization of the Book Creator application exerted a statistically significant influence on the enhancement of students\u27 writing ability in procedural texts within SMAN 1 Pasir Sakti during the 2021/2022 academic year.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki pengaruh potensial penggunaan aplikasi Book Creator terhadap perkembangan kemampuan menulis siswa dalam menyusun teks prosedur. Penguasaan dalam menyusun teks prosedur merupakan keterampilan penting bagi siswa, dan Book Creator menawarkan alat yang berpotensi berharga untuk memfasilitasi ekspresi ide mereka secara jelas dan kreatif. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain quasi-eksperimentaluntuk menganalisis pengaruh Book Creator terhadap keterampilan menulis siswa kelas XI SMA N 1 Pasir Sakti. Populasi target terdiri dari 302 siswa, dari mana dua kelas dipilih melalui teknik cluster random sampling: XI IPA 3 sebagai kelompok eksperimen dan XI IPS 3 sebagai kelompok kontrol, masing-masing terdiri dari 30 siswa. Tes awal dan tes akhir berfungsi sebagai instrumen pengumpulan data utama. Setelah pengujian normalitas dan homogenitas data melalui SPSS v.24, dilakukan uji t sampel independen. Hasilnya, dengan tingkat signifikansi (p) sebesar 0,003 (lebih rendah dari level alpha 0,05), menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan aplikasi Book Creator memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan secara statistik terhadap peningkatan kemampuan menulis siswa dalam teks prosedur di SMAN 1 Pasir Sakti pada tahun akademik 2021/2022
Gangguan Emosi Tokoh Sheila dalam Novel The Tiger’s Child Karya Torey Hayden
The objective of this study was to identify and understand comprehensively the emotional disorder happened to Sheila as the main character in The Tiger’s Child novel by Torey Heyden. This qualitative study used psychoanalysis method carried out in May – July 2022. The data were collected from the novel as a source of data. The data of emotional disorder were identified by reading the novel repeatedly and thoroughly. The research found 6 types of emotional disorder: anger was 23 (35,94%), Sadness was 14 (21.88%), loneliness was 9 (14.06%), apathy was 8 (12.50%), labil was 7 (10.94%), and anhedonia was 3 (4.69%). And the dominant emotional disorder experienced by Sheila was Anger. In addition, all emotional disorders were caused environmental and family factors.Penelitian bertujuan untuk memahami secara mendalam tentang gangguan emosi tokoh utama Sheila dalam novel The Tiger’s Child. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis isi. Penelitian ini dilakukan sejak Mei sampai Juli 2022. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui membaca novel, mengidentifikasi dan menandai teks yang menandakan terjadinya gangguan emosi dan menabulasikannya. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa ada 6 jenis gangguan emosi yang dialami oleh Sheila, yaitu: amarah 23 (34,85%), kesedihan 14 (21,88%), kesepian 9 (14,06%), apati 8 (12,50%), labil 7 (10,94%), dan anhedonia 3 (4,69%). Menulis Permulaan dan Media Reglet: Penelitian Tindakan pada Siswa Tunanetra
The current paper investigates the application of Reglet media in early writing for 7th graders of SLB Adiguna. It examines the writing performance improvement using Reglet Media for 7th graders at one of an exceptional school. This classroom action research was carried out at SLB Adiguna. The data of this study were the teaching-learning process and the students’ writing performance which were collected using teacher-student activity observation sheets and writing test instruments. The students’ performance in writing was improved using Reglet media. The pre-test and cycle I scores which were 62 had improved to 80 in cycle II. On the other hand, the teacher activities showed improvement by using reglet media in the teaching of writing letters, words, and simple sentences. It was 62.53% in first cycle then was increased to 88.45% at cycle II. In addition, the results of student activities also improved from 71.42% in first cycle to 92.85% in cycle II. In conclusion, the use of reglet media can improve the students’ performance in beginning writing especially SLB Adiguna 7th Graders.Penelitian ini mendeskripsikan tentang meningkatkan kemampuan menulis permulaan melalui Media Reglet Pada Siswa Tuna Netra Kelas VII Di SLB Adiguna Kabupaten Konawe.
Permasalahan dalam penelitian ini adalah Apakah penggunaan media reglet dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa kelas VII di SLB Adiguna. Penelitian ini bertujuan Untuk mendeskripsikan pelaksanaan pembelajaran menulis dengan media reglet siswa kelas VII SLB Adiguna.
Jenis penelitan yang digunakan adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas/ PTK (Clasroom action research). Penelitian dilakukan pada SLB Adiguna Kabupaten Konawe. Data dalam penelitian ini yaitu aspek aktivitas dan hasil belajar siswa selama mengikuti kegiatan pembelajaran menulis permulaan dengan media reglet dan aktivitas guru dalam menerapkan pembelajaran menulis permulaan dengan media reglet melalui lembar observasi aktivitas guru dan siswa.
Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah siswa dapat mencapai ketuntasan belajar baik individual maupun secara klasikal. Ketuntasan minimal 85 % dari seluruh siswa memperoleh nilai ≥ 61 ( tuntas). Hasil belajar siswa dapat ditingkatkan melalui penggunaan media reglet pada materi menulis permulaan siswa kelas VII SLB Adiguna yaitu pada pre test 62 pada siklus I hasil belajar mencapai 62 dan pada siklus II hasil belajar meningkat menjadi 80. Hasil aktifitas guru dapat ditingkatkan melalui penggunaan media reglet materi menulis permulaan pada penulisan huruf, kata-kata, dan kalimat sederhana siswa kelas VII SLB Adiguna yaitu pelaksanaan pembelajaran pada siklus I mencapai 62,53% dan siklus II meningkat menjadi 88,45%. Hasil aktifitas siswa dapat ditingkatkan melalui penggunaan media reglet materi menulis permulaan siswa kelas VII SLB Adiguna yaitu pelaksanaan pembelajaran pada siklus I mencapai 71,42% dan siklus II meningkat menjadi 92,85%
Increasing Students\u27 Vocabulary Mastery by Using Mind Mapping
This research aimed to increase students’ vocabulary mastery by using mind mapping. The researcher gave material about vocabulary by using mind mapping via WhatsApp group (online learning). The subject of this research was class VII C which consists of 25 students at SMP Tut Wuri Handayani Makassar, the academic year 2020/2021. The researcher used the classroom action research method in two cycles; each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The instrument used interview, field note, vocabulary test, and documentation. The result of this research showed the increase of the student\u27s vocabulary mastery by using the mind mapping technique from cycle 1 to cycle 2. It can be seen from the average test calculating in cycle I was 70.48 (11 students or 44% got completeness) and cycle II was 80.6 (18 students or 72% got completeness). This indicates that by using mind mapping, students’ vocabulary mastery can be increase significantly
Pembelajaran Model Think Pair and Share: Pengaruhnya terhadap Kemampuan Komunikasi Matematis Siswa pada Materi Himpunan
This study aims to examine the effect of think pair and share cooperative learning model on the mathematical communication skills of the 7th graders of SMPN 1 Puriala on the Set topic. This type of research is quantitative research that is a quasi-experimental (quasi-experimental). The design of this research is The Nonequivalent Posttest-Only Control Group Design. The population of this study was the 7th graders of SMPN 1 Puriala. The Class C (experimental group) and Class B (control group) were then selected as the samples of the study using purposive sampling technique. Paper test and documentation as the instruments were administered in collecting the data. The descriptive and inferential techniques were used in analyzing the data. The descriptive analysis found that the mean score of mathematical communication skill of the experimental class was 52.408 which was higher than mean scored by the control class, 36.400. In addition, the inferential analysis obtained the value of tcount = 6.815 > ttable = 1.671. As a result, H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. Descriptively, it shows that the mathematical communication skill of the experimental group is higher than the control group after being treated with a think pair and share cooperative learning model. It was concluded that the think pair model has a positively significant effect on the mathematical communication skills in the 7th graders of SMPN 1 Puriala on the topic of set
