Pharma fusion? Don’t buy your alliances partners if the goal is breakthrough innovation

324994.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)This paper examines the innovation impact of acquiring alliance partners. We argue that although pre-acquisition alliances might aid post-acquisition integration efforts, by offering insights into targets’ proprietary technologies, the familiarity that they foster will also significantly influence the firms post-acquisition innovation outcomes. We tested this using a dataset involving 252 firms, 2398 acquisitions, and 125,440 patents. We found that acquisitions involving former alliance partners increased innovation output. We also found that they fostered the development of more exploitative innovation. However, we found that these transitions inhibit the development of breakthrough innovation by limiting the firm’s exposure to novel insights. We conclude, therefore, that alliance partner acquisitions are far from an innovation panacea for the pharm industry.6 p

322498.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)PURPOSE: There may be sex-based disparities in intensive care unit (ICU) management and outcomes. We compared baseline variables, interventions, and outcomes of immunocompromised critically ill men and women. METHODS: We performed a post hoc analysis of the Efraim study, a prospective multinational cohort study of immunocompromised adults with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure admitted to one of 68 ICU in 16 countries between November 2015 and July 2016. We compared in unadjusted and adjusted analyses baseline variables, ICU interventions, and outcomes between men and women. RESULTS: We included 1536 immunocompromised adults (922 men, 614 women) in this study. Women and men had similar age, BMI, and diagnoses leading to immunosuppression; hematopoietic cell transplant was more common in men. On the first ICU day, SOFA score was higher in men vs. women (7 [IQR 4-10] vs 6 [4-10]), p = 0.0005). The use of ICU supportive interventions, including mechanical ventilation, vasopressors, renal replacement, bronchoalveolar lavage, and ARDS adjuncts, were similar between men and women; as were mortality in ICU, in hospital, and at 90 days. After adjustment, female sex (sub-hazard ratio 1.19, 95 % CI 1.05-1.36, p = 0.007), SOFA score on ICU day 1 (sHR 1.16, 95 % CI 1.12-1.19, p < 0.001) and chronic kidney disease (sHR 0.74, 95 % CI 0.59-0.93, p = 0.009) were associated with mechanical ventilation. Age, performance status and SOFA score on ICU day 1 were associated with hospital mortality. CONCLUSIONS: In this post hoc analysis of immunocompromised adult ICU patients with hypoxemic respiratory failure, women and men received similar ICU interventions, and had similar outcomes
The timing of an avatar's beat gestures biases lexical stress perception in vocoded speech
Item does not contain fulltextThis repository contains experimental data and scripts for the study "The timing of an avatar’s beat gestures biases lexical stress perception in vocoded speech" (Maran et al., 2025). For the stimuli, see the associated repository di.dcc.DSC_2023.00140_719 (https://doi.org/10.34973/b8k1-q907). Cochlear implants (CIs) are neural prostheses that restore some level of hearing capacity, albeit conveying a less fine-grained speech signal than normal hearing conditions. For example, CIs convey altered fundamental frequency (F0) information, resulting in atypical lexical stress perception (e.g., distinguishing between the noun CONtent and the adjective conTENT) in languages in which this feature rests on F0 modulations. CI users can compensate for the degraded nature of the acoustic input by exploiting the audiovisual affordances of human communication, weighing more heavily the visual information provided by speakers (e.g., lip movements and gestures). Recent studies showed that, in individuals with normal hearing, the timing of simple up-and-down movements of the hand (i.e., beat gestures) biases lexical stress perception. The present study tested if the timing of beat gestures produced by an avatar can bias Dutch lexical stress perception in vocoded speech, which limits the reliability of F0 information in a way that mimics CI-hearing conditions. The effect of gestures in vocoded speech was particularly pronounced when hearing an ambiguous or the least frequent stress pattern in Dutch. These results suggest that (even artificially generated) beat gestures can support the perception of vocoded speech, especially when processing less frequent prosodic features. The effects of (dis)similarities between the creator and the assessor on assessing creativity: A comparison of humans and LLMs

321754.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)Current research predominantly involves human subjects to evaluate AI creativity. In this explorative study, we questioned the validity of this practice and examined how creator–assessor (dis)similarity - namely to what extent the creator and the assessor were alike - along two dimensions of culture (Western and English-speaking vs. Eastern and Chinese-speaking) and agency (human vs. AI) influences the assessment of creativity. We first asked four types of subjects to create stories, including Eastern participants (university students from China), Eastern AI (Kimi from China), Western participants (university students from The Netherlands), and Western AI (ChatGPT 3.5 from the US). Both Eastern participants and AI created stories in Chinese, which were then translated into English, while both Western participants and AI created stories in English, which were then translated into Chinese. A subset of these stories (2 creative and 2 uncreative per creator type, in total 16 stories) was then randomly selected as assessment materials. Adopting a within-subject design, we then asked new subjects from the same four types (n = 120, 30 per type) to assess these stories on creativity, originality, and appropriateness. The results confirmed that similarities in both dimensions of culture and agency influence the assessment of originality and appropriateness. As for the agency dimension, human assessors preferred human-created stories for originality, while AI assessors showed no preference. Conversely, AI assessors rated AI-generated stories higher in appropriateness, whereas human assessors showed no preference. Culturally, both Eastern and Western assessors favored Eastern-created stories in originality. And as for appropriateness, the assessors always preferred stories from the creators with the same cultural backgrounds. The present study is significant in attempting to ask an often-overlooked question and provides the first empirical evidence to underscore the need for more discussion on using humans to judge AI agents’ creativity or the other way around.22 p

The Solve-RD Solvathons as a pan-European interdisciplinary collaboration to diagnose patients with rare disease.
Contains fulltext :
324477.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access)Despite advances in genomic diagnostics, the majority of individuals with rare diseases remain without a confirmed genetic diagnosis. The rapid emergence of advanced omics technologies, such as long-read genome sequencing, optical genome mapping and multiomic profiling, has improved diagnostic yield but also substantially increased analytical and interpretational complexity. Addressing this complexity requires systematic multidisciplinary collaboration, as recently demonstrated by targeted diagnostic workshops. Here, we highlight the experience of the Solve-RD consortium, a pan-European initiative, in implementing four structured workshops, termed 'Solvathons', as a regular and effective component of its operational workflow. We provide actionable insights, best practices and lessons learned for successful data integration, expert training and scalable collaborative diagnostics within large research consortia

The stability of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 in children aged 14-36 months with elevated likelihood for autism
Contains fulltext :
325748.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access)Background: This study investigated the stability of Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) classifications in a cohort of 304 siblings at elevated likelihood for autism (EL-siblings). Methods: ADOS-2 assessments were conducted at 14, 24 and 36 months, with Clinical Best Estimate (CBE) autism diagnoses determined at 36 months. Results: Our findings indicate that while some children have stable ADOS-2 classifications from early on, a significant proportion of the children show inconsistent classifications over time. The overall stability of ADOS-2 autism spectrum classifications increased from 14 to 36 months and agreement with CBE autism clinical diagnosis was moderate and increased with age. Conclusions: Caution is warranted when interpreting individual ADOS-2 results, as they should always complement, and can never replace, a comprehensive clinical evaluation. These findings highlight the importance of continued follow-up beyond 14 months in young EL-children, a group for whom early assessment may be both feasible and beneficial and emphasises the need to integrate multiple assessment measures and multiple informants for accurate early autism identification.16 november 202512 p
