The Implicit in Attention
Get PDFStarting with the active character of attention, claimed by Merleau-Ponty as a bridging element between intellectualism and empiricism, the essay delves into the Husserlian roots of the dynamic and structuring concept of attention, emphasising the importance of affectivity on the one hand and the concept of the ‘implicit’ on the other. It is precisely the category of the implicit that will guide us in the analysis of corporeality, of the unconscious understood as the deep body (Thomas Fuchs). State action and the movements of finance during the Spanish housing crisis: Alleviating or amplifying the social impacts of financialization?
Get PDFThis paper addresses the entanglements, complicities and collisions between financialization processes and state action during the current housing crisis in Spain, with a focus on Catalonia and the Barcelona area in the last decade. Departing from the assumption that housing financialization has been a major driver of the crisis, state interventions, including housing policies and legal regulations imposed on financial and real estate markets and on landlord-tenant relations, will be interpreted as modulators that may either alleviate or amplify the impacts of financial dynamics on people’s access to adequate housing. Drawing on the cases of several legal reforms, we will illustrate variegated attitudes towards financial extraction adopted by different state agencies. It will be thus shown how, in the rare cases where the state has tried to alleviate the social harms derived from financial extraction, reforms have been superficial, have arrived late, and have failed to reverse the structural drivers of the crisis. We will thus try to shed some light into the nature of state action in the face of housing financialization, contending that states should not be understood as outsides with respect to finance, as, to the contrary, they are part of finance’s very conditions of possibility.Questo articolo esplora le interconnessioni, le complicità e le collisioni tra i processi di finanziarizzazione e l’intervento dello stato durante l’attuale crisi abitativa in Spagna, con particolare attenzione all’ultimo decennio in Catalogna e nell’area di Barcellona. Partendo dall’assunto che la finanziarizzazione dell’edilizia sia stata un fattore chiave della crisi, le azioni dello stato, comprese le politiche abitative e le norme giuridiche imposte sui mercati finanziario e immobiliare e sulle relazioni tra proprietari e inquilini, saranno interpretate come elementi di modulazione in grado di attenuare o amplificare gli impatti delle dinamiche finanziarie all’accesso delle persone a un alloggio adeguato. Analizzando diversi casi di riforme legislative, illustreremo le varie posizioni adottate da differenti enti statali nei confronti dell’estrazione finanziaria. Si mostrerà, quindi, come, nei rari casi in cui lo stato ha cercato di alleviare i danni sociali derivanti dall’estrazione finanziaria, le riforme siano state superficiali, siano arrivate tardivamente e non siano riuscite a invertire i fattori strutturali della crisi. In tal modo, cercheremo di approfondire la natura dell’azione statale di fronte alla finanziarizzazione dell’edilizia, sostenendo che gli stati non dovrebbero essere visti come entità esterne ma, piuttosto, come parte integrante delle condizioni stesse di possibilità della finanza

Get PDFBeyond the distinction between speech acts and acts of conscience (intentionale Erlebnisse) – certainly correct, but proposed with some oversimplification by certain handbooks –, the paper reflects on the logic of testimony and presence in the religious language. The point of convergence between analytical (in its pragmatic point of view) and continental philosophy (especially in the phenomenological-hermeneutic approach) is the first-person experience of reality: a peculiar bond of realism, consciousness and language, which I propose to call the intentional-performative. Through the intersection of hermeneutics, phenomenology and philosophy of language, the link between logos and action is understood as personalistic one, together with the experience of truth in the word
Our Common Extended Consciousness and the Readability of Things
Get PDFThe article consists of a general introduction and two main parts, the first relating to sensory, qualitative consciousness and the second to discursive, intentional consciousness. The general thesis of the first part can be formulated like this: Humans literally overlap in their infinite spatiotemporal field of consciousness, which is one and the same for all and is only oriented differently by each individual, namely egocentrically in each case. On the basis of this common extended consciousness we can talk to each other about things. In the second part, the thesis – inspired by the divergent picture theories of elementary sentences developed by the early Wittgenstein and then by Wilfrid Sellars – is argued that when we talk about things, we read them and translate them into verbal language. We read them as world-sided primordial tokens (1) of their names, (2) of phenomenal “this-such” representations of them, and (3) of various elementary sentences about them, thus treating them as objects, as Kantian intuitions and as token facts respectively. Incidentally, this result can serve to illuminate Heidegger’s thesis in his 1950 lecture on language that it is originally language that speaks – as the “ringing of silence” or “chiming of stillness” (“Geläut der Stille”) – and that humans have the call to speak back to language in talking to each other, i.e. to respond to the chiming of stillness
