Disruption, interrupted: Startups and social challenges in a government accelerator
Get PDFThis article investigates how the dual demands of finance and social impact affect the relationships of founders to disruption, as a rhetorical function, material goal and relational context. Building on recent studies of innovation and entrepreneurship such as Bardinelli (2019), Irani (2019) and Lindtner (2020), the article offers a nuanced view of disruption that complicates unidimensional narratives of financialization as a singular force and accounts for the complexity of reconciling financial and social interests. Based on data gathered at a startup participating in a government-funded accelerator program in Melbourne, Australia, we analyse how the logics of finance impact entrepreneurial experience in an early-stage social enterprise startup. Our data suggests that, in their attempts to attract the attention and funding of financial investors, founders of early-stage startups focus more on proving the value of their disruption in a rhetorical sense than on refining the materially disruptive potential of their products to ensure real world social impact. By analysing disruption through a relational lens, we identify four layers of disruption (product innovation; social value; financial return; and labour relations) to which early-stage startups are aligned, and through which their products and personal lives are transformed.Questo articolo esamina come le richieste della finanza e dell'impatto sociale influenzino il rapporto dei finanziatori con il concetto di disgregazione, sia a livello retorico che nell'ambito degli obiettivi materiali e nel contesto relazionale. A partire da studi recenti sull'innovazione e l'imprenditorialità (ad esempio quelli di Bardinelli 2019, Irani 2019 e Lindtner 2020), l’articolo offre una visione sfumata della disgregazione che complica le narrazioni unidimensionali della finanziarizzazione intesa come forza singolare, tenendo conto, inoltre, della complessità di conciliare interessi finanziari e sociali. Utilizzando dati raccolti presso una startup che partecipa a un programma di accelerazione finanziato dal governo a Melbourne, Australia, analizziamo come le logiche finanziarie influenzino l’esperienza imprenditoriale in una startup di impresa sociale in fase iniziale. I nostri dati suggeriscono che, nel tentativo di attirare l’attenzione e i finanziamenti degli investitori finanziari, i fondatori delle startup in fase iniziale si concentrano maggiormente nel dimostrare il valore della loro innovazione in senso retorico piuttosto che nel perfezionare il potenziale effettivamente innovativo dei loro prodotti per garantire un impatto sociale tangibile nel mondo reale. Analizzando la disgregazione attraverso una prospettiva relazionale, identifichiamo quattro livelli di disgregazione (innovazione del prodotto; valore sociale; ritorno finanziario; relazioni lavorative) a cui le startup in fase iniziale sono allineate e attraverso i quali i loro prodotti e le loro vite personali vengono trasformati

Más allá de la mesa: la cerámica medieval como objeto ornamental
Get PDFIn this paper we present a review through the main examples of a cultural practice that used ceramics as its preferred medium of expression. A large number of productions from the late Middle Ages preserve a small hole in the base, indicating that their intended destination might have been the wall rather than the table. The conversion of this utensil into a popular artistic object brings with it important semantic nuances that are analysed in this text. The ornamental character of the green and black production, widely spread throughout the western Mediterranean, reveals that its introduction into the home not only served practical purposes but also facilitated and energized the adherence of the lower classes to a trend for the sophistication of everyday life.En este artículo se presenta un recorrido por las principales muestras de una práctica cultural que se sirvió de la cerámica como medio de expresión predilecto. Un gran número de producciones de la baja edad media conservan una pequeña perforación en la base indicativa de que su destino podría haber sido la pared y no la mesa. La conversión de este utensilio en un objeto artístico popular acarrea importantes matices semánticos que se analizan en este texto. El carácter ornamental de la producción en verde y negro, ampliamente difusa en todo el Mediterráneo occidental, revela que su introducción en el hogar no sirvió únicamente a fines prácticos, sino que facilitó y dinamizó la adherencia de las clases populares a una moda por la sofisticación de lo cotidiano
Mobilità e ritmo: la raffigurazione del lavoro e del paesaggio in Strada Provinciale Tre di Vinci
Get PDFThis article analyses the representation of labour in Simona Vinci’ Strada Provinciale Tre (2007), considering its deep relationship with environmental issues and ecological awareness. Thanks to an ecopoetic analysis of this novel, my research aims to contribute to the literary-critical debate around labour by focusing on different aspects which aren’t usually considered; on the one hand, I will look at the interrelation between the act of working and the environmental transformations, on the other, I will explore the expressive possibilities of ecological images that are linked with labour. The former will be shown by observing the different effects which Capitalism has on the working-body and on the Earth-body. The latter will be examined through three different narrative processes that distinguish Vinci’s novel: immersive walking, natural and anthropic rhythms, social and spatial aspects of mobile practices. The theoretical framework will combine the thematic analysis of labour with Mobilities studies and Ecopoetic.Questo articolo analizza la rappresentazione del lavoro considerando la sua profonda relazione con le questioni ambientali e il pensiero ecologico. Grazie a un'analisi ecopoetica di Strada Provinciale Tre di Vinci (2007), questa ricerca si propone di contribuire al dibattito critico-letterario intorno al lavoro mettendo a fuoco diversi aspetti solitamente non considerati: da un lato, l'interrelazione tra l'atto del lavorare e i cambiamenti ambientali, dall'altro, il potenziale potere delle immagini ecologiche legate al lavoro. Il primo aspetto sarà mostrato osservando gli effetti che la produzione capitalista ha sul corpo-lavoro e sul corpo-terra. Il secondo sarà esaminato attraverso tre diversi processi narrativi che contraddistinguono il romanzo di Vinci: la camminata immersiva, i ritmi naturali e antropici, gli aspetti sociali e spaziali delle pratiche mobili. Il quadro teorico combinerà la critica tematica del lavoro con gli studi sulle Mobilità e l'Ecopoetica

Get PDFThe text restores as far as possible the experience of the Venetian walk in the footsteps of Gaspara Stampa. In the course of which an attempt has been made to recompose the life of the poetess by visiting the salient places (or what remains of them) of her biography, and understanding the spaces she inhabited and travelled as forms of her feeling, capable of preserving and restoring her memory. By linking each stage to some of her texts, a parallel reading path was also created, so that the poet herself could give voice, step by step, to her relationship with the city, with the men she loved, with her friends and family affections: lending herself to a sort of auto/biographical experiment illustrated, in real time, by the buildings, landscape and atmospheres.Il testo restituisce per quanto possibile l’esperienza della passeggiata veneziana sulle tracce di Gaspara Stampa. Nel corso della quale si è tentato di ricomporre la vita della poetessa visitando i luoghi salienti (o quel che ne resta) della sua biografia, e intendendo gli spazi da lei abitati e percorsi come forme del suo sentire, in grado di custodire e restituire la sua memoria. Vincolando ogni tappa ad alcuni dei suoi testi, si è peraltro realizzato un parallelo percorso di lettura, atto a far sì che la poetessa stessa desse voce, via via, al suo rapporto con la città, con gli uomini amati, con le amiche, gli amici e gli affetti familiari: prestandosi a una sorta di esperimento auto/biografico illustrato, in tempo reale, dagli edifici, i paesaggi e le atmosfere della città
Bringing dissent to shareholders’ meetings: An investigation into critical shareholding
Get PDFThis article deals with critical shareholding, that is, the action of non-profit organizations that resorts to involvement in corporate ownership as shareholders to promote socially responsible corporate behaviours. Based on the combined use of sociological and anthropological tools, I focus on the attendance of annual general meetings (AGMs) as a gateway to understand the potential and the limits of the transformative power of marginal actors in investment capitalism. My findings suggest that confrontation through share ownership exerts transformative pressures not only on companies but also on activist organizations, which over time are called to redefine their skills, actions and intervention logic to pursue their goals more effectively and report them to their stakeholders. Thus, the analysis of the phenomenon reveals the dialectical nature of the processes that take place in and around the AGM, giving them a place in the complex dynamics of movements and countermovements of finance and their mutual relationship.Questo articolo si occupa della partecipazione critica alla proprietà azionaria, intesa come l’azione di organizzazioni non profit che ricorrono al coinvolgimento nella proprietà aziendale per promuovere comportamenti socialmente responsabili. Utilizzando strumenti sociologici e antropologici, l’analisi si concentra sulla partecipazione alle assemblee generali annuali (AGM) quale chiave di lettura per comprendere il potenziale e i limiti del potere trasformativo degli attori marginali nell’ambito del capitalismo d’investimento. I risultati suggeriscono che il confronto attraverso la proprietà azionaria eserciti pressioni trasformative non solo sulle aziende, ma anche sulle organizzazioni attiviste, che nel tempo sono chiamate a ridefinire le proprie competenze, azioni e logiche di intervento per perseguire i propri obiettivi in modo più efficace e renderli noti ai propri portatori di interesse. Pertanto, l’analisi del fenomeno rivela la natura dialettica dei processi che si verificano all’interno e intorno alle AGM, conferendo loro un ruolo nelle complesse dinamiche dei movimenti e dei contro-movimenti della finanza e delle loro reciproche relazioni
