Pragmatism, Realism and Hermeneutics
This paper aims to analyse the notion of familiarity in Dewey’s pragmatism in order to show its important role as a tool for human beings to interpret the reality, manage it, and act within it. Starting from an examination of Deweyan transactional realism, the discourse focuses on familiarity and its related terms (such as “familiar,” “to familiarize,” but also opposite such as “unknown” or “strange”) in Dewey’s thought, to finally come to highlight its fundamental hermeneutic role. This might be useful to account for a subject of Deweyan thought not so deeply highlighted by scholarship and, at the same time, to show pragmatism’s closeness to hermeneutics about the relation between human being and the real. This paper aims to analyse the notion of familiarity in Dewey’s pragmatism in order to show its important role as a tool for human beings to interpret the reality, manage it, and act within it. Editors' Introduction
Hermeneutics has a long tradition in the history of philosophy. It carries the task of Hermes to bring God’s message to humans and translate it without betraying it. This special issue of the journal Critical Hermeneutics proposes a double research track: veritative hermeneutics and hermeneutic realism. This double track testifies to the original purpose of hermeneutics to formulate fundamental philosophical questions in light of human historical experience. Opposed to relativism, veritative hermeneutics and hermeneutic realism focus on truth, objectivity, the structure of reality, normativity, and meaning. The issue publishes contributions of this track’s pioneers (Gaspare Mura – veritative hermeneutics, Günter Figal, and Anton Friedrich Koch – hermeneutic realism) as well as authors that explore this track from various perspectives: ethics, personalism, normativity, testimony, Biblical hermeneutics and Jewish thought, religious language, meaning. In this introduction, we will first present the authors working on veritative hermeneutics, then those working on hermeneutic realism...
Ruled Imagination
This paper aims to show how Paul Ricoeur’s inquiry on memory, trace, and testimony contributes to rebalancing a framework that, at the dialectical level between imagination and representation, would essentially present historians’ work as hermeneutical. In Ricoeur’s later writings, we find a differently balanced perspective by focusing the (neurobiological and psychological) substrate of representation behind trace and memory. Representation precedes interpretation. And neither memory’s fidelity nor history’s epistemic truth belong to a game that would be solely played within the communicative space of a plurality of cognitive agents who are exchanging, controlling and sharing their experiences. Consequently, the reality of the past itself emerges in the practice of memory’s background
Regina José Galindo. Guatemala, violencias desbordadas
The work aims to analyze some of the performative works included in the bodista proposal of the Guatemalan artist Regina José Galindo. Starting from the expression "violencias desbordadas", used by Casaús Arzú, an attempt will be made to embed performative actions in the detailed forms of respectively gender, symbolic and systemic violence, to understand how the logic of violence permeates the Guatemalan context and produces subordinate subjectivity.
This paper aims to analyze some deep-sea contexts recently identified in the maritime area between the southern coast of Sardinia and present-day Tunisia. This area was also highly frequented by boats sailing between the western and eastern Mediterranean basins. In the cases examined, the amphorae recovered in these high depths can reveal precious data regarding possibly still intact contexts for the middle and late-imperial and medieval ages.
Harbour sites as a support to the reconstruction of networks and influences: the case of the Mistras Lagoon (Sardinia, Italy)
Ancient harbours and anchorages are valuable contexts to investigate the different material culture that could reach a region, and to reconstruct ancient commerce and connections between different areas. Moreover, as they usually present waterlogged and anoxic sedimentation conditions, organic materials are preserved in addition to ceramics and other inorganic objects, giving more elements to the archaeological reconstruction. This is the case of the Mistras lagoon in Central-West Sardinia. The lagoon has been identified as the harbour of the city of Tharros, active during the Punic period, from the 7th to the 3rd century BC. It is characterised by an interior sandy barrier, recognised as a palaeobeach; here the University of Cagliari held two archaeological excavations during the years 2014 and 2015, revealing a natural stratigraphy rich in archaeological materials, typical of a waterlogged site. The analysis of the carpological remains, seeds, and fruits, recovered by sampling 29 different stratigraphic units, reveals the presence of a great number of cultivated species. Some of the species identified were possibly introduced during that period to the island, together with agricultural practices and technologies that improved local cultivations. Concerning the xylological remains found in the excavations, some fragments of manufactured wood provide important information about objects of common use, while other fragments are attributable to remains of ships.
This paper highlights how the life paths of problematic minors can evolve positively, even after engaging in deviant behaviours. One such outcome is achievable through careful educational support, focusing on the acquisition of learnings and skills that can be used in the social context while having significance for the life project of the minor.
This interview with Alberto Prunetti focuses on his work both as a writer (Amianto, 108 metri, Nel girone dei bestemmiatori), and as the editor of Alegre’s “Working-class” series and one of the organisers of the Working-Class Literature Festival (Campi Bisenzio, March 31st — April 2nd 2023). One of the most relevant voice’s in Italy today on the topic of working-class literature, Prunetti explores here some questions on literature, class struggle, and trying to find one’s own voice.
