Una «monomania, inaudita e straordinaria». Le fantastiche illustrazioni di Alberto Martini per i racconti di Edgar Allan Poe
Get PDFThe general aim of this article is to question the opportunities offered by the tools of classical narratology for image analysis, particularly those images that accompany or derive from text. This would probe the legitimacy of parallelism between systems of description and interpretation, which could be used for both media (metarelations, according to Kibédi Varga’s theoretical indication). An attempt has been made to demonstrate the value of this proposal through a case study taken from the cycle of illustrations created by Alberto Martini (1876-1954) for E. A. Poe’s tales: specifically, the work related to his The Tell-Tale Heart. A comparison was made between the narratological categories associated with the fantastic genre by Tzvetan Todorov, and the dynamics of Martini’s visual syntax. A further comparison was made with illustrations inspired by the same text but created by different artists. The result of these correlations highlights a structural correspondence leading to the same reading effect, which is the peculiar feature of fantastic art.L’intervento, partendo da una breve ricognizione teorica e storica volta ad inquadrare l’illustrazione letteraria come un «problema di teoria della letteratura» (Carrara 2021), ha lo scopo di interrogarsi sulle possibilità offerte dagli strumenti della narratologia classica ai fini dell’analisi delle immagini che accompagnano o che derivano dai testi, sondando la legittimità di un parallelismo tra sistemi di descrizione e interpretazione (matarelations) adattabili ai testi letterari quanto alle immagini (Varga 1989). Nello specifico è stata effettuata una comparazione tra i meccanismi propri del genere fantastico (Todorov 1970) e alcune illustrazioni realizzate per i racconti di E. A. Poë da Alberto Martini (1876-1954). 
From Paper to Film: Historical and Cultural Implications of Italian Illustrated Editions of Little Women (1908-1945)
Get PDFThis article analyses Italian illustrated editions of Little Women published between 1908 and 1945. After an overview of the publishing history of the novel in Italy, the paper will examine Italian illustrations as hermeneutic tools in order to examine their ideological function in the representation of gender. The belated reception of Alcott’s novel in Italy, caused by its representation of a nonconformist educational model for girls, is mirrored in the tension between the nationalistic drive and the influence of foreign models that can be pinpointed in the illustrated editions. By analyzing adaptations of American illustrations, original Italian creations, and omissions of iconic illustrations, this paper will unveil how much the visual element is embedded in the Italian historical and cultural context, as the choice (or omission) of particular images impacted the interpretation of the book. By examining the Italian editions of Little Women published in this time frame, we will also be able to retrace the links with the American illustrated history of the book and bear testimony to the powerful impact of the 1934 film version on printed editions

Transumano e antispecista? Umani, non umani ed ecologia culturale nell'utopia transumanista
Get PDFWith a rich corpus of images that influenced cultures all over the world, the idea of human/animal mimicry or even hybridization is neither unfamiliar nor unprecedented. In more recent times, speciesism and the theoretical implications of trans- and posthumanism have drawn from the rich well of mythology that informed literary genres such as fantasy and science fiction, to create new models of interaction between human and non-human animals that attempt to break the mold of nature and culture as opposites. Through the analysis of Motherlines by Suzy McKee Charnas and the MaddAddam Trilogy by Margaret Atwood, this paper aims to argue the hypotheses of anti-speciesism in literary models of transhumanism relying on human/animal hybridization in post-apocalyptic societies, focusing on its underlying anthropocentrism in a perspective deeply rooted in cultural ecology. In the same perspective, we will observe the modes of interaction between human and non-human animals according to what transhumanists define as ‘uplifting’ (Dvorsky, 2008), and we will highlight the ways in which human/animal hybridization can fuel new utopian narratives for the survival and rebirth of collapsed societies, in order to argue how anti-speciesism does not find their proper place in this brave new interspecies and transhumanist world.Con un ricco corpus di immagini che hanno influenzato le culture di tutto il mondo, l’idea dell’ibridazione uomo/animale non è certamente senza precedenti. In tempi molto più recenti, lo specismo e le implicazioni teoriche del trans- e postumanesimo hanno attinto alla ricca fonte tematica che ha dato vita a generi come il fantastico e la fantascienza, per creare nuovi modelli di interazione tra animali umani e non-umani, al fine di mettere in crisi, ancora una volta, l’opposizine tra natura e cultura. Attraverso l’analisi di Motherlines di Suzy McKee Charnas e della trilogia di MaddAddam di Margaret Atwood, questo saggio intende discutere le ipotesi di antispecismo nei modelli letterari del transumanesimo che poggiano sull’ibridazione uomo/animale in un contesto post-apocalittico, concentrandosi in particolare sul mai superato antropocentrismo che resiste persino all’interno di una prospettiva eco-culturale. Nella stessa prospettiva, osserveremo le modalità di interazione tra animali umani e non-umani secondo quello che i transumanisti definiscono ‘uplifting’ (Dvorsky, 2008) ed evidenzieremo i modi in cui l’ibridazione uomo/animale può dare vita a nuove narrazioni utopiche per la sopravvivenza e la rinascita delle società al collasso, per giungere infine a una riflessione sullo spazio che l’antispecismo potrebbe non trovare in questo nuovo mondo interspecie e transumanista

Get PDFIn vista della compilazione della mia tesi di laurea, dedicata al fumettista rivoluzionario Jean Giraud aka Moebius, ho avuto l’opportunità d’intervistare due grandi disegnatori e autori di fumetti, soci fondatori della Scuola Romana dei fumetti e miei maestri: Eugenio Sicomoro e Massimo Rotundo.
Il criterio adottato nella formulazione delle domande ha posto l’attenzione innanzitutto sul percorso professionale dei due autori, inserito in entrambi i casi nel panorama del fumetto europeo fin dagli anni ‘80. Sia Sicomoro che Rotundo, infatti, sono riusciti ad avere voce nell’editoria franco-belga fin da giovane età. Seguono le trascrizioni delle interviste integrali e inedite in cui si approfondiscono diversi aspetti: il percorso artistico e personale; i rapporti e le differenze tra fumetto italiano e fumetto francese; i meccanismi dell’editoria degli anni ’80 e ’90; il ruolo delle riviste; il rapporto tra cinema e fumetto; il ruolo degli storyboard artist; uno sguardo attento sul lavoro del grande fumettista e visionario Jean Giraud, che i due maestri hanno avuto la fortuna di conoscere personalmente.
 
Witnessing, Truth, and Realism
Get PDFDeparting from the opening lines of Aristotle’s Metaphysics, this essay provides a hermeneutic phenomenological contribution to the recent turn to realism. In particular, it offers an account of the notions of truth and reality are thought in hermeneutic phenomenology by exploring the meaning of notions such as res, substance, and causa; it provides a contemporary reinterpretation of theōria that does not fall prey to either the modern version of the scientific-theoretical point of view or the onto-theological fallacies of metaphysics. By developing the model of witnessing as a guideline for a rethinking of theōria, this essay discusses, first, two realist critiques of hermeneutic phenomenology concerning correlationism and relativism; second, two ways of understanding the real and the true in hermeneutic phenomenology; and third, develops how language can be the locus of truth. In the course of these explorations, it is shown how truth, realism, theōria are understood in hermeneutic phenomenology
