The Boundaries of the Unconscious
Get PDFThe psyché-soma difference (Bartoš 2006) is one of the structuring themes not only of Western thought but also of modern psychology, which inherits this debate from the philosophical tradition and the religious tradition. Through a journey with early texts by Henri Bergson, including the psychology and metaphysics classes he taught at the Lycée de Clermont-Ferrand in 1887-1888, as well as the psychophysical parallelism of 1901, we address the difficulties pointed out in the monist position and its reverberations in contemporary psychology, which are commanded by neuroscience and cognitive psychology. We intend to highlight the impasses of the monist position that continue to be re-edited. In fact, despite countless technological advances concerning the issue of the nature of this duality, the debates seem to have stopped at the assertions that Bergson already denounced at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, which denotes the strong presence of ontological options that largely overlap with the empirical inspiration of modern science. What are the determining lines in the resistance to this debate? Why do advances in research technologies not correspond to advances in the argument about this duality? Are there practical consequences for the reading of reality when adopting the monist principle, which remains sovereign in Western thought albeit unproven? These questions will guide the reflection we begin in this work
On Schopenhauer’s Theory of the Unconscious Choice of Fate
Get PDFWe propose to investigate Schopenhauer’s hypothesis of transcendent fatalism, namely, his conjecture that there seems to be a secret force that guides us better than ourselves, as he explains in Transcendent Speculation on the Apparent Deliberateness in the Fate of the Individual (1851). In this investigation, we will highlight his interpretation that this invisible force, called by the ancients Destiny (ειμαρμεχη), Demon (δαιμόν), or Providence (προνοια), symbolizes nothing other than our own nature or unconscious Will. Finally, we will also seek to contextualize that this interpretation of Schopenhauer, according to Marcel Zentner and Stephen Atzert, gives reason for Freud to cite that essay, in Beyond the Pleasure Principle, in connection with the psychoanalytic thesis of the unconscious choice of fate (unbewußten Schicksalswahl)
Frammenti erratici e spazio sacro: dentro e intorno la cattedrale di Matera
Get PDFThe talk opens with the presentation of some erratic sculptural fragments dated to the 13th century and currently preserved in the Stone Materials Depot of the National Archaeological Museum in Matera. Through stylistical analysis and through archival documentation, the pieces are contextualized within the medieval artistic setting of Matera. Among the materials taken into consideration, a homogeneous group of fragments likely pertaining to a lost liturgical furniture, of which the paper offers a hypothetical and preliminary visual restitution, appears particularly noteworthy. On the other hand, the second part of the paper focuses on several zoomorphic sculptures of thirteenth-century workmanship reused within one of the chapels of the Cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria della Bruna and Sant'Eustachio. For all these materials, finally, the hypothesis of their original provenance from the Mother Church of the city is proposed and differently argued.L’intervento si apre con la presentazione di alcuni frammenti scultorei erratici databili al XIII secolo e attualmente conservati presso il Deposito di materiali lapidei del Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Matera. Attraverso l’analisi stilistico-formale e tramite la documentazione d’archivio i pezzi vengono contestualizzati all’interno del panorama artistico medievale materano. Tra i materiali presi in considerazione, appare particolarmente degno di nota un gruppo omogeneo di frammenti verosimilmente pertinenti ad un perduto arredo liturgico, di cui l’elaborato offre un’ipotetica e preliminare restituzione visiva. Oggetto della seconda parte del contributo, invece, sono diverse sculture zoomorfe di fattura duecentesca reimpiegate all’interno di una delle cappelle della Cattedrale dedicata a Santa Maria della Bruna e di Sant’Eustachio. Per tutti questi materiali, infine, viene proposta e diversamente argomentata l’ipotesi dell’originaria provenienza proprio dalla Chiesa Madre della Città dei Sassi, monumento che, a seguito di recenti restauri, è oggi tornato all’attenzione della critica

Una testimonianza tra l’età altomedievale e giudicale. Status quaestionis e nuove proposte per i frammenti scultorei di Nuraminis
Get PDFThe peculiarity of the ciborium of Nuraminis (SU), now in a fragmentary state, is the presence of dedicatory epigraphs in Greek, one of which, written in the Latin alphabet, mentions Constantine I. Through the studies carried out on the fragments, it is proposed to investigate the various aspects of the monument inherent to the decorative motifs and its function, especially in relation to the epigraphs. These not only allow us to hypothesise that the monument was commissioned by a high-ranking personage with a political role in the territory of Cagliari, but also represent an important clue to the mention of the first Christian emperor. The development of his cult in the East, and the importance of his figure in the West as well, made it possible to provide additional data for the dating of the ciborium and to speculate on the reasons for the choice of mentioning Constantine I on the monument.La peculiarità del ciborio di Nuraminis (SU), giunto sino a noi in stato frammentario, consiste nella presenza di epigrafi dedicatorie in lingua greca, di cui una, scolpita in alfabeto latino, menziona Costantino I. Attraverso gli studi condotti sui frammenti si propone di indagare i vari aspetti del monumento inerenti all’apparato decorativo e alla sua funzione, soprattutto in relazione alle epigrafi. Queste ultime, infatti, oltre che permette di ipotizzare una commissione da parte di una figura certamente d’alto rango, con un ruolo politico nel territorio cagliaritano, rappresentano un dato importante per la menzione del primo imperatore cristiano. In considerazione dello sviluppo del suo culto in oriente e dell’importanza rivestita dalla sua figura anche in ambito occidentale si è cercato dunque di desumere ulteriori dati inerenti alla collocazione cronologica del ciborio e la scelta di citare Costantino I sul monumento
The human body in two Egyptian dystopias: al-̣Tabūr (2013, The Queue) and Hunā badan (2017, Here Is a Body) by Basma ‘Abd al-‘Azīz
Get PDFAgainst the backdrop of the recent resurfacing of the dystopian genre in the Arabic literary field, the Egyptian psychiatrist, essayist, and novelist Basma ‘Abd al-‘Azīz stands out for her political dystopias, which can be read as lucid projections of the ‘real malfunctioning’ of the Egyptian political system. In this essay, building on a close-reading analysis and on two interviews given to me by the author between 2018 and 2023, I dissect the novel al-Ṭabūr (2012, The Queue 2016) and its prequel Hunā badan (2017, Here Is a Body 2021). In particular, I will focus on the trope of the human body as a ‘transformative space’ in which the oppressive authority can exert its control, its persuasion, and its strength to the point of creating bodies that lack minds
Multiverse Fiction: A narratological approach to infinite worlds narratives
Get PDFIn recent years, movies and tv shows have increasingly adopted the notion and the structure of the multiverse from superhero comics, resulting in a great popularity of the concept across a wider audience. The article aims to define the basic features of contemporary multiverse narratives, and to explore some of their textual applications. The first part will deal with the narratological theory of parallel worlds in fiction, following Marie-Laure Ryan’s and Karin Kukkonen’s analyses, to outline five key features shared by each multiverse narrative. The second part will be devoted to three significant case studies, that show three different applications of the multiverse as a textual device: Everything Everywhere All at Once as an example of intertextual narrative; Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, that relies on a cultural dominant; and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a transmedial storyworld expanded through the characteristics of the multiverse
La prospettiva straniante della scienza in un’utopia di Eduardo Holmberg: Olimpio Pitango de Monalia (1915)
Get PDFIt is customary to think of utopia as a genre that deals mostly with socio-political issues and that takes a revolutionary approach to a status quo. This paper reflects on the impossibility of identifying a common and original aim behind the utopian genre, especially that of cognitive estrangement, if understood as a critical-dialectical, liberating and dubitative epistemological approach. The analysis of a utopian novel by Argentinian writer Eduardo Holmberg shows that the presence of estranging procedures does not necessarily lead to scepticism about the ‘normality’ of social facts. On the contrary, it can serve the purpose of persuading about the existence of a more valid and normal social order compared to the existing one. The paper proposes then a key to interpret utopian texts in relation to the problem of evil and suggests expanding the meaning of the word ‘estrangement’ to take into account the different aims which can coexist within the same literary procedure.Si è soliti pensare all’utopia come un genere con un interesse prevalentemente socio-politico e un’attitudine rivoluzionaria rispetto a uno status quo. Questo articolo riflette sull’impossibilità di individuare un intento comune e originario alla base del genere utopico, in particolare quello di uno straniamento cognitivo inteso come approccio epistemologico critico-dialettico, liberatorio, e dubitativo. L’analisi di un romanzo utopico dello scrittore argentino Eduardo Holmberg mostra come la presenza di un procedimento straniante non conduca necessariamente a problematizzare fatti sociali ritenuti ‘naturali’, ma possa al contrario servire per persuadere della maggiore validità e naturalità di un altro ordine sociale rispetto a quello vigente. L’articolo propone quindi una chiave di lettura dei testi utopici in relazione al problema del male, e suggerisce di ampliare il significato del termine ‘straniamento’ in relazione ai diversi scopi che possono soggiacere a uno stesso procedimento letterario
