    The Critic and the Cure

This article aims to analyze Hannah Arendt's critique of psychoanalysis in her short essay published in 1943, We refugees, in which, in the midst of her reflections on the changing social situations of Jewish refugees from the Second World War. Arendt describes psychoanalysis as an outmoded practice of a tedious elite who tell “ghost stories” based on minor events from their childhoods, which, in her perception, becomes unnecessary after the frightening events witnessed during the war. This critique in itself could already serve as an object of detailed analysis, nevertheless it becomes particularly interesting when, in the following paragraphs, Arendt proceeds to examine the suicides committed by Jewish refugees, who are supposed to be safe from the dangers of war in the countries where they are welcomed, basing her investigations on possible internal factors. This approach is very similar to Sigmund Freud's so-called social theory, describing a series of symptoms which, although they only affect individuals, have a social origin, that is, they are due to historical moments or events that individuals all together experience. Arendt discusses her suspicion of the optimism with which many Jews faced the loss of their mother tongue, the sense of feeling like victims who had to be saved and the necessity of adapting to the new habits of their new countries' cultures – whereas all of these themes are the subject of psychoanalytic studies. Lastly, the author describes an individual who would illustrate her concerns about Jewish optimism and the constant pursuit of being part of the national culture and identity: Mr. Cohn, who would become one of the most famous characters in Arendtian thought, which, in this sense, can also be compared to a clinical case, presented in psychoanalytic writing to illustrate the development of symptoms and the analysis. Despite ironizing psychoanalytic practice, the following pages will analyse whether it is possible to relate Arendt's investigation into the suicides of Jewish refugees and the fragile state in which refugees find themselves in the countries that receive them to the psychoanalytic methods criticized by the author in the same essay

    Intercorporeality and the Transference Phenomenon

    Get PDF
This article aims to propose elements to understand the role of corporeality in the transference phenomenon based on the articulation between psychoanalytic listening and two ideas from Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy: the concepts of body schema and intercorporeality. The transference relationship is revisited through the lens of Merleau-Ponty’s thesis that our relationships with others are based on a corporeal, unconscious, and libidinal infrastructure. We hope to present a possible reading and complementation tool to elucidate the intercorporeal substrate present in the transference neurosis revealed by Freud

In 1899, Hans Graeven published an article in which he analyzed two ivory reliefs that were part of a 10th-century Byzantine diptych: the left panel, depicting the Crucifixion and the Deposition, is currently exhibited in the Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum in Hanover, while the right panel, with the Meeting in the Garden and the Anastasis, is kept in the Grünes Gewölbe in Dresden. Subsequent studies in the 20th century have confirmed the validity of Graeven's thesis, although the lack of more recent monographic contributions leaves some questions unanswered. This article revisits the proposals regarding the arrival of the two panels in the West, provides an analysis of the iconographies and identifies a group of specimens that can be considered forgeries and/or copies of the diptych.

Counselling as a Procedural Safeguard for Brain-Machine Interfaces

The rapid development of Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMIs) presents unprecedented opportunities to enhance cognitive and physical capabilities. However, their transformative potential raises significant ethical challenges regarding autonomy, identity, and agency. In this article, I argue for the implementation of a model of enhanced informed consent, requiring individuals to participate in counselling before gaining access to BMIs. Such a requirement respects individual freedom while addressing the risks BMIs pose to fundamental human values. Drawing on Robert Nozick’s libertarian framework, I highlight how counselling aligns with the moral basis of rights by ensuring individuals have the capacity to structure their lives in meaningful ways while respecting individual rights and autonomy. In fact, I argue that introducing counselling as a conditional procedural safeguard to have access to BMI technology is the better strategy vis-à-vis resorting to substantive prohibitions or paternalistic policies. Enhanced informed consent enables individuals to make deeply informed decisions while preserving their ability to lead meaningful lives.

The necropolis of Jebel Zebouzi (El Kef): integrated and multiscale archaeological analysis of protohistoric megalithic structures from Northern Tunisia

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the integrated and multiscale archaeological analysis of the necropolis of Jebel Zebouzi in El Kef, Northern Tunisia, shedding light on the complex and diverse megalithic structures that characterize the region. North Africa features a vast array of pre-Roman funerary monuments, ranging from monumental tombs influenced by Punic and Roman-Hellenistic examples to autochthonous rock-cut chamber tombs known as haouanet. The landscape is further enriched with bazinas, chouchet, tumuli, and dolmens, in some cases forming extensive necropolises. Despite their visibility, the understanding of these structures remains limited. Early assumptions regarding their dating were challenged, suggesting a Late Bronze Age origin. After two centuries of research, there remains a significant hiatus in knowledge regarding the spatial arrangement, funerary traditions, and chronology of these megalithic necropolises. To bridge this gap, the research project described in this paper has employed cutting-edge techniques such as drone imagery, photogrammetry for documentation during remote and on-foot surveys. Together with selected excavations and bioarchaeological analysis, the goal is to reconstruct some of the necropolis’ stratigraphical and spatial configuration, offering insights into horizontal and vertical social complexity and the utilization of space. The study addresses hence the phenomenon of reuse and modification of these ancient monuments over time, raising questions about cultural appropriation, memory, history, and the negotiation of cultural identity. This comprehensive approach aims to contribute to the understanding of North African pre-Roman funerary practices and the cultural dynamics that shaped these megalithic landscapes

This paper illustrates the results achieved and the methodology adopted during the research project Digital Anastylosis and Interactive Spatial Interpretation: the church of Saint Augustine in Padua as an exemplary case study, which took the Dominican church of Padua in its fourteenth-century phase as an important case study. The building, demolished in 1819, housed a vast fresco cycle by Guariento, of which some fragments survive, and the funerary tombs of the Da Carrara family. The study was conducted through a constant dialogue between ancient sources (archival documents, descriptions and old illustrations of the church) and the surveys on the area under investigation, which allowed the reasoned 3D restitution of the monument.

Emanazioni, spettralizzazioni, ossessioni Fra reale e virtuale

The relationship between the real and the virtual is increasingly central in defining narrative worlds in contemporary culture. On one hand, the rise of digital and immersive technologies seems to reignite easy apocalyptic temptations in critical thought; on the other, it offers new modes of writing and techniques for the materialization and dissemination of narrative worlds. In this interview, Mirko Lino, Associate Professor of Cinema, Television, and Photography at the University of L'Aquila, provides an overview and brief assessment of the dialectic between the real and the virtual. Ranging across various fields of artistic and media production (cinema, serials, literature, video games, comics), he describes some transmedia strategies for constructing storyworlds, while also exploring contemporary imagination's obsessions, such as illusion, dreams, and spectrality.  The relationship between the real and the virtual is increasingly central in defining narrative worlds in contemporary culture.

    Get PDF
The preference for content rather than form has earned Alberto Mostajo’s poetic work the neglect of studies on the avant-garde, since these prioritize the analysis of the expressive aspect. For this reason, the purpose of this article is to offer a new reading of the heteroclite character of Canción infinita (1928) in the light of the category of the avant-garde of the aphepts. To this end, we propose that the collection proposes a shamanic metaphysics as an alternative means of understanding the cosmos. Such vital sapience grants the speaker the perception of the infinite and, therefore, the understanding of the nothingness of the human being. In this sense, the poetry book exposes the cosmic journey as a dissident and critical epistemological option against the world fossilized by modernity and anthropocentrism. The methodology of analysis will be based on General Textual Rhetoric, specifically Stefano Arduini’s figurative fields.
