Calypsis. Submerged Worlds and Post-Apocalyptic Subjectivities in Contemporary Comics

    No full text
This paper examines contemporary post-apocalyptic comics centered on the aquatic element. It builds on three Italian graphic novels: La terra dei figli by Gipi (2016), Celestia by Manuele Fior (2019), and Troppo facile amarti in vacanza by Giacomo Bevilacqua (2021). It aims to investigate the theoretical, aesthetic, and symbolic role of water in the narrative articulation of the Anthropocene crisis in recent comic book production, beyond its literal diegetic functions. The analysis takes an interdisciplinary approach combining ecocriticism, visual semiotics, comics studies, and media theory. We introduce the theoretical category of ‘epicalypse’ to describe a mode in which the post-apocalyptic condition is inscribed within the present, haunting its imaginary with the idea that the catastrophic event has already occurred. Within this framework, water becomes a medial metaphor and a cultural grammar through which contemporary comics articulate life after the end – simultaneously evoking destruction and generation, concealment and revelation, the dissolution of entrenched institutions and the potential for posthuman subjectivities

Mettere al mondo, alla fine del mondo. Appunti su eco-ansia e genitorialità nelle narrazioni ipercontemporanee

    Get PDF
The ‘sense of ending’, that every generation has always had to face, has accelerated in recent decades, generating widespread concern for the future of a planet that appears increasingly fragile and vulnerable. Awareness of the short- and long-term consequences of change generates forms of eco-anxiety that are also reflected in individual choices, such as those relating to parenthood. Starting from these premises, the article reflects on the ways in which the issue presents itself in all its complexity and urgency in some hyper-contemporary novels and graphic novels, such as Avant l’oubli (2021) by Lisa Blumen, Beautiful World, Where Are You (2021) by Sally Rooney, and The Bee Sting (2023) by Paul Murray, which question our way of living and surviving together. &nbsp

    Get PDF
Tratalias, a small municipality in the historical region of Sulcis, has experienced a complex history characterized by phases of abandonment and repopulation and, more recently, by the relocation of the population to a new settlement due to structural problems that arose in the years following the construction of the Monte Pranu dam. Today, part of the so-called medieval village has been preserved, constituting a historical heritage that, although physically separated from the community, represents a cultural reference point and a potential attractor for local tourism. This contribution focuses on the analysis of cultural heritage perception by both residents and visitors of the center, through a questionnaire and direct tools for recording the community’s experiences and opinions. The peculiar context of Tratalias, in which the population coexists with a physical separation from its historical heritage, offers a privileged ground for developing citizen science actions, which are still in their early stages. The data collected, however, represent a valuable foundation for future cultural design and participatory management interventions, aiming to promote sustainable initiatives capable of integrating economic, social, and cultural aspects, and of strengthening the community’s connection with its heritage.

    Get PDF
This article will seek to highlight the presence of canids in Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala’s Nueva corónica y buen gobierno. To carry out this analysis, the presence and symbolism of canids in medieval manuscripts will serve as background, given their direct influence on chroniclers’ writings. Secondly, the presence and symbolism of canids in the Andean worldview will be analyzed, given the syncretic nature of the Nueva corónica. Finally, the text will be read through theoretical concepts such as “territory,” “becoming,” and “multiplicity” from the poststructuralist perspective of philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. As an a priori hypothesis of the research, it would be possible to establish canids as entities that transcend the hierarchies imposed in the context of the work. This is achieved by granting new levels of interpretation andliterary value to the colonial chronicle in a process of animal deterritorialization.

Introducing the Digital Platform Sylloge Inscriptionum Religionis Africae Romanae (SIRAR)

    Get PDF
This article presents the aims, structure, and analytical potential of SIRAR (Sylloge Inscriptionum Religionis Africae Romanae), an open-access digital platform designed to catalog and analyze religious inscriptions from Roman Africa. Drawing on a corpus of nearly 5,800 inscriptions, the article explores divine onomastics – both theonyms and epithets – through quantitative, qualitative, and network-based methodologies. Particular attention is given to the interplay between normativity and creativity in the construction of divine names, and to the linguistic and cultural diversity of religious expressions across Neo-Punic, Greek, and Latin contexts. The study reveals polytheistic patterns of divine naming practices, their geographic and ritual distribution, and the socio-religious significance of metahuman agents in the epigraphic landscape of North African Roman provinces
