Mitigating Digital Debt in Packaged Enterprise System Customization
Packaged enterprise systems (PESs) are built with an assumption that they support best processes. Nevertheless, PESs often require some modifications (i.e., customizations or configurations) to ensure they fit an organization’s needs, data structures, information infrastructure, and related processes. These modifications are resource-consuming and may generate significant costs over a system’s lifetime, eventually generating digital debt that leads to a high risk of system failure. As such, organizations aim to modify systems as little as possible as the first measure to mitigate such risk. In this paper, we study how organizations minimize PES customization. We conducted a case study on the customization of a commercial PES in the Nordic region. We interviewed 16 business representatives and consultants involved in implementing and operating the enterprise asset management (EAM) system in their respective organizations. They all stated that modification or "customization is not good in long term" and presented their practices to keep customization low. Although these are not necessarily "best practices," they nevertheless provide insight into these professionals’ approaches to minimize lifetime costs. To minimize PES customization, attention should be devoted to new product evaluation, project planning, and project execution. Different factors, such as business process actors’ resistance to change, ineffective change management, and the missing engagement of all business units, increase the amount of customization.peerReviewe
The facilitators and constraints of simulated racing professionalization: a cross cultural analysis between Europe and Asia Pacific
Recently, research on simulated racing (sim racing) emerged to define the rationale behind its development but its professionalization remains an uncharted territory. This study aims to fill the gap by embracing Abbott’s framework to examine the professionalization of sim racing in Europe and Asia-Pacific. Data were analyzed using an inductive-deductive codebook approach. The results show how different facilitators and constraints can either foster or prevent sim racing professionalization in Europe and Asia-Pacific. In particular, Europe was depicted as a favourable territory for sim racers professionalization marked by wider synergies between virtual/real racing and bigger opportunities to establish profitable businesses. On the contrary, our findings portrayed Asia-Pacific as a challenging territory where sim racers encounter more difficulties to professionalize themselves because constraints are restraining more their professionalization than facilitators are enabling it. This research provides both theoretical and practical contributions for sim racers professionalization embedded in Abbott’s framework.peerReviewe
Quantifying feedback among traits in coevolutionary models
Phenotypic traits rarely evolve in isolation. Instead, multiple traits typically interact to influence fitness, resulting in complex coevolutionary dynamics. Such dynamics can be predicted using mathematical frameworks such as adaptive dynamics and quantitative genetics. Selection gradients play a crucial role in these frameworks, describing the direction and strength of selection and thus predicting evolutionary trajectories and potential endpoints. Current theory focuses mainly on analysing how traits change in response to selection, which changes over time as traits evolve. However, the extent to which changes in each trait contribute to changes in the selection environment remains unquantified, leaving much of our understanding of trait coevolution reliant on verbal reasoning. To advance a more comprehensive and quantitative understanding of coevolutionary dynamics, we develop a general framework that examines how trait changes feed back to influence the selection environment. This framework enables a fine-grained and systematic investigation of coevolutionary feedback between traits and selection gradients by quantifying the pathways through which they influence one another. Our framework can be applied both to adaptive-dynamic models and to quantitative-genetic models under the weak selection limit. We illustrate our approach with three examples that showcase its potential to deepen our understanding of established models.peerReviewe
Impact of non-financial parameters of strategic investment decision-making on corporate financial performance
Purpose
This study aims to explore the non-financial parameters (NFPs) of strategic investment decision-making (SIDM) and their impacts on corporate financial performance (CFP).
Design/methodology/approach
In this quantitative study, first, primary data were collected through a survey questionnaire from the managers of listed Pakistani manufacturing firms during 2018 via personal visits to companies, and 142 valid responses were received. The secondary data included annual reports and stock market data, which were used to measure CFP with indicators such as profitability growth and Tobin’s q. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to identify the NFP focus in SIDM, such as top management or firm strategy emphasis. Various regression models were used to thoroughly consider the impact of the NFPs on financial performance.
Findings
The study shows that the different emphases of SIDM cannot explain financial performance very well. However, there is an indication that the firm strategy component (emphasis) is positively linked to the profitability growth and share price growth. Moreover, top-level management emphasis seems to influence Tobin q.
Research limitations/implications
This study highlights how, for example, the management may contribute to operational performance. Understanding these dynamics provides insights into how businesses create value for shareholders and for the society.
Practical implications
For example, top-level management can impact SIDMs and CFPs, but managers also need to consider company-specific aspects of the decisions and performance.
Originality/value
The study enriches the academic and managerial literature by explicitly analyzing the impact of SIDM in a developing country context.peerReviewe

Probing QCD via dijet invariant mass in pp and p--Pb collisions and performance of forward jets with ALICE FoCal
Jetit, eli kollimoituneet hiukkassuihkut, syntyvät kovista partoniprosesseista. Jetit
LHCssa. Tässä työssä esitän kaksi jettitutkimusta CERNin ALICEkokeessa.
Ensimmäinen tutkimus tuottaa päivitetyn mittauksen varattujen dijettien
invarianttimassasta käyttäen protoni-protoni ja protoni-lyijytörmäysdataa joka
on mitattu massakeskipiste-energialla
√
sNN = 5.02 TeV ALICEn Run 2 aikana.
Määritän dijettimassaspektrin ja ydinmuutostekijän RpA massa-alueella 75 −
150 GeV/c2.
POWHEG + PYTHIA Monte Carlo -simulaatioiden ennustuksiin. Vaikka mitattu
RpA on mittausepävarmuuksien rajoissa yhteensopiva RpA = 1 kanssa, sijaitsevat
mittauspisteet systemaattisesti RpA = 1 yläpuolella. Simulaatiot viittaavat
anti-varjostusalueelle. Vaikka nykyiset mittausepävarmuudet
ovat liian suuria varmoja johtopäätöksiä varten, tulevaisuuden tutkimukset uudella
ALICEn Run 3-datalla voivat parantaa tulosten tarkkuutta. Tämä mittaus
toimii myös vertailupohjana vastaaville tutkimuksille lyijy-lyijytörmäyksissä.
Työn toinen tutkimus käsittelee ALICEn tulevan Forward Calorimeter (FoCal)
-ilmaisimen suorituskykyä etusuuntaisissa jettimittauksissa. Käyttämällä datan
ja ilmaisimen simulaatioita määritän saavutettavissa olevan poikittaisliikemääräalueen
sekä jettien energiaskaalan ja -resoluution. Osoitan, että etusuuntaisten
jettien, dijettien ja fotoni-jettikorrelaatioiden mittaukset ovat toteutettavissa
FoCal:lla. Nämä mittaukset mahdollistavat QCD-aineen gluonisaturaation tutkimuksen
matalilla Bjorken-x:n arvoilla x ∼ 10−6 asti.
ALICEn Run 4-ajossa.Jets, collimated sprays of particles emerging from hard parton processes, are
powerful probes of the strong interaction and of nuclear matter under extreme
conditions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In this thesis, I present
two studies of jets in the ALICE experiment at the LHC.
The first analysis reports an updated measurement of the invariant mass of
charged dijets in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon
center-of-mass energy of
√
sNN = 5.02 TeV, using Run 2 data. I determine the
dijet mass spectra and the nuclear modification factor RpA in the mass range of
75 − 150 GeV/c2. The results, extending the earlier work presented in Ref. [1],
are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo simulations of PYTHIA and
POWHEG+PYTHIA. While the measured RpA is found to be consistent with
unity within experimental uncertainties, it lies systematically slightly above unity.
Simulations suggest that this enhancement may result from dijets probing the
anti-shadowing region of the nuclear PDFs of lead. While the current measurement
uncertainties are too large for a definite conclusion, future studies with
Run 3 data can provide greater sensitivity. This measurement also establishes
a baseline for corresponding future analyses in Pb–Pb collisions.
The second analysis is the study of jet performance in the upcoming ALICE
Forward Calorimeter (FoCal) upgrade. Using data and detector simulations, the
achievable transverse momentum range as well as the jet energy scale and resolution
are quantified. The feasibility of forward jet, dijet and photon-jet measurements
is demonstrated. Such measurements will enable FoCal to probe the gluon
saturation regime of QCD matter at low Bjorken-x down to x ∼ 10−6. In addition,
results from test beam campaigns for the FoCal prototype are presented, validating
the detector concept and performance in preparation for the construction and
installation of FoCal for data taking in Run 4.navigointi mahdollistastructural navigationLaTexilla tuotettu pdf.Pdf created with LaTex
