Pemilihan Acacia mangium untuk Sumber Benih dengan Teknik Analisis Bip dan Korespondensi di Parungpanjang, Bogor, Jawa Barat Selection of Acacia mangium Willd. Provenances for Seed Source by Technique of Bi-plot and Correspondence Analysis at Parungpanjang, Bogor, West Java
Provenance trials is one of planting test activities aimed at finding the best provenance in a certain area of forest plantations. The best provenances can be used for establishing the seed sources in the location. The objective of this research was to identify the character or trait performed in every provenance of A. mangium to the observed variable and to see the relation between variables in order to find the potential provenances that can be developed as seed sources. Provenance trials stand as an object for this research was planted in 1995 in Parung Panjang Forest Research Area with Completely Random Block Design. The spacing in planting between trees was 3 metres located at 3 blocks. Number of provenances to be observed were 15 provenance. In every provenance was taken 5 trees sample randomly that equal to 75 trees in each block as representave of every provenance. Totally the sample trees was 225 trees from the 3 blocks. The variables to be observed in this research were tree height (X1), clear bole (X2), tree diameter (X3), tree volume (X4), stem form (X5), branching system (X6), dan bentuk tajuk (X7). Analisis yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah analisis biplot dan korespondensi.
Five Year Growth and Survival of Eucalyptus Hybrid Clones in Coastal Kenya
Twelve eucalyptus hybrid clones (6 grandis-camaldulensis i.e. GC and 3 grandis-urophylla i.e. GU hybrids) and 3 local landraces (E. camaldulensis, E. tereticornis, and E. urophylla) were established in Gede, Sokoke, and Msambweni in the Coast Province of Kenya in 2002, to compare growth, survival, and adaptability in the 3 sites. By the end of the 1st year, trees in Sokoke were more than 3 times the mean height of those in Gede and Msambweni. However, these growth advantages during the 1st year in Sokoke were not maintained and by year 2 Gede had caught up, although Msambweni still lagged behind. By age 5 there were significant growth differences between clones. Of the tree sites, Msambweni had the lowest tree growth. GC167, GC14, GC581, and GC584 proved themselves as the better clones, while E. camaldulensis and E. urophylla were the better local land races. Overall, the “local land races” performed poorly in all sites. Survivals were over 80% in all sites for the best performing clones. However, in Sokoke, 1 clone died (GU7) while another (GU8) had a survival of less than 20%, while EC and ET had survivals less than 35%. GC796 died in Msambweni and had 8% survival at Gede. The poor survivals in Sokoke may have been due to a severe drought in the 3rd year. The initial outstanding growth performance in Sokoke may have been due to the fact that Sokoke was a ‘virgin’ forest site and presumably more fertile than the other two sites. These results show that recommendations on outstanding clones or new germplasm for planting or sale to farmers are best done at the end of the rotation for a particular intended product or use
Dampak Kebijakan Nonkehutanan pada Deforestasi dan Kemiskinan di Kalimantan Timur: Sebuah Analisis Berbasis Agen
This paper aims to analyze the impact of non-forestry policy, especially energy related macro policy decisions, on poverty and use levels of natural resources. As core indicators, this analysis employs ‘number of households below the poverty line’ and ‘area of deforestation’. Impacts are analyzed in an agent-based simulation model for 6 districts of East Kalimantan, one of the Indonesian natural-resource rich provinces on the Island of Borneo. Simulation results partly suggest that the policy decision of June 2008-politically known as decreasing fuel price-had nearly no impact on deforestation amplifying that the dominating driver of deforestation is large scale logging and mining operations, as well as potentially illegal activities. While, it reduced the number of poor people-those mostly living within and around forest area-by about 5.4%. Due to seasonal income, this policy-related impact is likely to be periodically lower. During the harvest related period, many households are able to lift their income above the poverty line. This seasonal fluctuation in poverty could help optimize public funding by spreading it over longer periods and by pausing direct transfers during such natural periods of poverty reduction. There is no significant implication for forestry or forest management since the model could only deal with small scale forestry
Erosi Tanah Akibat Operasi Pemanenan Hutan (Soil Erosion Caused by Forest Harvesting Operations)
Forest harvesting operation has been known as an activity that should be considered as the main cause of soil erosion. Indonesia, the second largest owner of tropical forest, should have a serious consideration to the operation. Therefore, the study was conducted in logged over area of a natural production forest. The objectives of the study was to examine level of soil erosion caused by forest harvesting operations and to analyze a strategy to control level of the erosion based on its influencing factors. The study showed that forest harvesting operations caused soil erosion. Factors that influenced the high level of the erosion were high level of precipitation, lack on planning of forest harvesting operations, no applying treatment of cross drain and cover crop in the new skidding roads, no culture of carefulness in the operations, and low human resource capacity in applying environmentally friendly forest harvesting techniques. Keywords: soil erosion, forest harvesting, logged over area, skidding roa
Studi Penyusunan Tabel Volume Lokal Jenis-Jenis Komersial Ekspor di Hutan Mangrove HPH PT. Bina Lestari, Propinsi Dati I Riau
Rhizophora apiculata (bakau) and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (tumu) in are commercial export species of mangrove forest. Both species are the dominant species in mangrove forest at HPH PT. Bina Lestari I (Gaung and Mandah River Forest Complexs), Riau Province. To ensure a continuous production of wood, detailed knowledge about standing stock obtained through inventories is needed. To facilitate and improve the reliability of inventories, volume table is indispensable. The results represent mensurational study on 100 purposive selected sample trees, 50 samples for each species. Two models are developed, in which, bakau used a volume/diameter function (tariffs),while the other (tumu) used volume/diameter/height function to estimate the volume of individual trees. The dveloped tariffs of bakau is : V = 0.000107152 D 2.4; while the tariffs of tumu is : V = 0.000134896 D1.61 T, where V is volume from the base of tree up to diameter limit 7 cm outside bark and without root/shrunk; D is Diameter outside bark at 20 cm over the root/shrunk; and H is Total tree height
Pemilihan Jenis Tanaman Kebun-Talun: Suatu Kajian Pengambilan Keputusan oleh Petani
A study of peasant\u27s choices to agriculture crops is important to understand what is its preferencies, consideration, and constraints. This knowledge of peasant\u27 choices could help the scientists and extensionists for sharing their knowledges with the peasant communities to improve agriculture productivity, product optimalization, and products prices. The objective of the research is to explain what reasons/ consideration is taken into account by peasants when he choose a kind ofplant species. The research found that peasant choose kebuntalun crops with some reasons i.e. (1) to get numerous products; (2) to get various products (daily and continuously, for household subsistence and for income); (3) to be easy maintenance; (4) to be easy to sell products; (5) its price is stable or increase; (6) heritage from our parent; (7) small plot of land; (8) to be suitable with land condition. This finding show that the peasant has productive, efficient, and commercial orientation as well as prefer to diversity of products. Based upon this finding the author suggest that the role of extensionist is to provide basket ofplant choices which can be productive, efficient, easy to maintain, easy to sell, stable or increase price, and diversity ofplants

Effect of Blue Stain on the Toughness of Benguet Pine (Pinus Kesiya Royle Ex. Gordon) Wood
Keywords: Pinus kesiya Royle ex.
