    Strategi Pengembangan Ekowisata di Kabupaten Kepulauan Yapen Provinsi Papua

    Yapen Islands Regency has a very potential and feasible capital to be developed as a tourism attraction object. However, its ecotourism management does not optimal because of several constraints such as lacking institutional capacity of ecotourism management, weak attraction management, less spatial planning of tourism, and ineffective promotion and marketing, as well as problems on regional security. This research was conducted to formulate strategies to develop the islands ecotourism. The results showed that most of the tourism attractions (sea, water, and land ecotourism objects) in Yapen were feasible for further development ecotourism attractions. However, some of the potential tourism objects were not yet possible to be developed due to some barriers and constraints, i.e. unsupportive market potential, bad access due to location of the objects, below-standard management and services, poor accommodation, and high similarity with other objects.  The research, therefore, recommends that pessimistic strategy should be applied in overcoming the problems.  The strategy should be supported by arrangement of the tourism space, development of attractions management, development of promotion and marketing, development of regulations and management in ecotourism organization, and creation of a conducive and secure situation, both within and outside the tourism area

    As the importance and threats of wildlife resources in Melanesia are widely recognized, their appropriate use is critical to achieve sustainable development in the country. An underestimated relationship between the status of the species with forest condition and food security is discussed. Being as nutritious as conventional imported red meats, bandicoots are also considered as the most rapidly breeding marsupial. The taxonomy, morphology, habitat, and reproductive characteristics of the family Peroryctidae (bandicoots) are succinctly described in order to elucidate the species potential in continuous controlled harvests in the wild and its eventual farming, until now successful abroad with one species from a related family. This effort requires the application of proper regulations that guarantee continuous harvests in accordance to the population dynamics

    Effect of Charcoal Earth Kilns Construction and Firing on Soil Chemical Characteristics

    Assessments of localized ecological and environmental impacts of charcoal production including effects on soils at kiln sites is seldom undertaken, with more emphasis being placed on the global effects of the practice such as forest degradation and deforestation. A study was undertaken in Narok, Eldoret, Moiben, and Turbo in Kenya on known charcoaling sites to investigate the impact of charcoal production on the soil chemical characteristics. Composite soil samples from 12 sampling points for all study sites were taken randomly at a depth of 0–15 cm. The samples were conditioned and analyzed for pH, particle size, Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), extractable phosphorus, organic carbon, nitrogen, and exchangeable bases. A comparison of the soil properties between undisturbed sites and charcoaling sites showed significant differences for all chemical properties except CEC, Mg, and K. For the Moiben site, only the pH showed no significant difference (p < 0.05).  The observed high carbon content reduced with time for the one year following charcoaling activity and was attributed to soil erosion since charcoal production activities reduced the sites vegetation cover. Most chemical changes positively enhanced the nutrients content and availability, but were short lived probably due to soil erosion.  These results demonstrate the need to adopt technologies with minimum impact on the soil, or a shift to centralized production sites outside forest ecosystems or farmlands.

    Analisis Pemangku Kepentingan dalam Upaya Pemulihan Ekosistem Daerah Tangkapan Air Danau Toba (Stakeholder Analysis on Ecosystem Restoration of Lake Toba Catchment Area)

    Increasing population and exploitation of Toba Lake catchment area had caused environmental degradation. Various institutions attempt to rehabilitate the area, including Ministry of Forestry through the ITTO project. The project aims to gather all stakeholders of restoration of Toba Lake catchment area ecosystem and facilitate them to exchange knowledge and information, so that they could have same understanding and build a network. This study was conducted in 3 districts, i.e. Samosir, Simalungun, and Karo. The respondents were selected using snowball sampling. The data was analyzed using stakeholder mapping. The study shows that key stakeholders of Lake Toba catchment area ecosystem restoration are government institutions which their role and functions are still limited according their main tasks  which hindered  synergic activities among them. There are potential conflict and collaboration among stakeholders which should be managed for the benefit of the project.

    The objective of this study was to find out the prediction model  for copal production (Y) by  the use of prediction variables. The variables were diameter (X1), bark thicknesses (X2), stand density (X3), slope (X4), and direction of the slope (X5). The study was conducted at Senduro Forest District, Probolinggo Forest Management Unit of Perum Perhutani, Unit II East Java. Data was collected from 80 sample trees of Agathis loranthifolia Salibs which were tapped on August 2006.  The  result of the study showed that there were several  regression prediction models  for  copal production:  doubled linear, multiplicative, exponential and quadratic regression models. Multiplicative regression model with the highest  R2-adj  value was  then chosen  as the best prediction model  for  copal production.  Thereby, production estimation model of copal production of Agathis loranthifolia Salis. was  LogY = 0.397 + 1.54 LogX1 + 0.496 LogX2  -  0.528 LogX3 + 0.201 LogX4  ; or Y = 2.4945X11.54X20.496X3-0.528X40.201; R-Sq =84.7%, R-Sq(Adj) = 83.7%.  Keywords:  multiplicative regression model, copal, diameter, bark thickness, stand density, slop

    Sspatial forestry data are inexorably needed to support the reforestation activities. By using multi-temporal data, reforestation activities can be identified and detected. To accomplish the purpose, this research used Landsat TM data acquired in 1990 and 1995. Remotely sensed data and Geographic Information System (GIS) are methods that can be applied together, to monitor as well as analyze data swiftly and accurately. This research used remotely sensed data to collect land cover features in given area. Geographic Information System is used to capture and to analyse reforestation data.     Main objective of this research was to identify dominant factors, which determined management system of Repong Damar (SPRD). SPRD was strategically complex and dynamic. Through system approach with SWOT analysis, AHP and Liker Scale, this research identified its dominant factors. Dominant factors, which determined SPRD goals, are land suitability, ecosystem functions, biodiversity, household economy insurance, trading practice and investment inputs. Furthermore, SPRD sustainability was supported by inheritance institution, indigenous knowledge’s, and ownership, which constitute social status symbol. Development strategy of SPRD was determined by community organizations strength and self-resilience, availability of road infrastructure, and law enforcement on farmers rights

    The hydrological function of Gunung Halimun National Park (GHNP) has enormous benefit for local people. To predict the monetary benefit of water stemming from the park, the research was conducted by taking 13 representative samples of villages surrounding GHNP. Through the economic valuation, this research found out that the total economic value (TEV) water was Rp 6.64 billion per year, consisting of water value for domestic uses (Rp 5.22 billion), and water value for agriculture uses (Rp 1.42 billion). The TEV of the water equal to Rp 6.64 billion (Rp 173.278,47 per ha) is representing economic benefit value of water stemming from area TNGH for the community of 51 villages which abut on direct by TNGH. The monetary value certainly will be bigger if we look at the area broader as the all area of watershed function. The enormous benefit value of water (domestic and the agriculture) prove that development of conservation area (in this case is GHNP) do not oppose against economic development

    Some Factors Affecting Seed Viability of Leucaena leucocephala (Lmk. de Witt.)

    This study objective to determine (1) when appropriate harvesting peas, (2) methods of seed extraction by drying, (3) fungal pathogen attack young Leucaena leucocephala seed pods. Time proper harvesting is 62 days after flower buds. At this time reached the highest seed germination of 97.25%. Drying by blowing warm air without producing the lowest open pods compared with a gust of air drying with hot air blowing, the number of pods open: 20% of the pods No. 9; 21% of the pods No. 10; and 41% of the pod No .11 with the relative seed germination highest compared with other drying the second consecutive 87.13%, 44.25%, and 19.75%. However, the germination of seeds from the seed extraction method by blowing air without heating is still lower than the control. Pathogen fungus that attacks the seeds were Aspergillus sp. Alternaria sp., Pythium sp., and one unidentified species

    System dynamic is an effort to understand complexity of social and eco-systems of forest. Through this system, a conscious learning on interaction between people and forest will take place in order to manage forest in more sustainable and equitable manners. A system dynamic modeling was carried out in area surrounding Lumut Mountain Forest, District of Pasir, and East Kalimantan. In the area, where legally was allocated to a logging company, live local people who depend on forest and rattan. The policy makers are trying to improve the well-being of local people without sacrifying the logging company. Aim of the study was to give policy options to policy makers and likely impacts of those options. The built model comprises biophysical, social, policy and impact main components. The model shows the change of impact indicators, which are standing stock, community income, and concession revenue and government income, given any selected policy option. &nbsp
