    Get PDF
Forest harvesting still encounters many problems especially concerning impact to the residual stand  and environmental damage. Implementing the reduced impact monocable winch and planning of good skid trails should have a positive impact on work efficiency as well as, reducing damage to the residual stand and soil during felling and skidding activities. Reduced impact logging (RIL) with a monocable winch (Pancang Tarik) system has been tried in several IUPHHKs and it can be concluded that RIL monocable winch system could be applied practically and reduce impact on residual stand and soil damage. Using this technology has many advantages, among others: cost efficiency, locally made, environmental friendly, and high local community participation. Application of  the monocable winch  system in reduced impact logging is an effort to reduce economical and environment  damages when compared to conventional system of ground based skidding with bulldozer system. The aim of this research is to verify the efficiency (operational cost), effectiveness (productivity) and  time consumption of monocable winch system. The results  indicate that the implementation monocable winch system, has reduced the soil damage as much as 8% ha-1.  The skidding cost  with monocable system is Rp95.000 m-3. This figure is significantly cheaper if compare with ground base skidding with bulldozer system in which the skidding cost around Rp165.000 m-3

    Get PDF
This study aimed to find out the lead tolerance of sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria) seedling based on growth performance, tolerance index, and ecretion and accumulation of organic acids content. Seedlings were exposed to lead (Pb) with the concentration of 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 5, and 10 mM in liquid nutrient culture for 4 days in order to investigate secretion and accumulation  of  oxalic, malic, and citric content, and for 15 days to examine growth performance and olerance index. The result showed that tolerance index and growth performance of engon seedling were insignificant (p > 0.05) to the rising of Pb concentration up to 1.5 mM with tolerance index at least 95%, and even caused an increase of fresh weight.  However, the tolerance index and growth of sengon  decreased significantly due to Pb exposure of 5 and 10 mM.  Among the three organic acids, citrate was most dominant as compared to malate and oxalate. Secretion of citrate increased significantly (p < 0.05) with the rising concentration of Pb 0.5, 1 and 1.5 mM,  reaching to 0.464, 0.540, and 0.587 µg mℓ-1, respectively, or rising according linear line (r = 0.9, p < 0.5).  Citrate accumulation showed inconsistent pattern with the rising Pb exposure.  The result suggested that sengon seedling have a slightly tolerance to lead by secretion of organic acid especially citric acid

Forest exploitation and conversion to other landuse may cause lost of biodiversity, including most important dipterocarp trees species, i.e. Shorea leprosula and Shorea laevis. The objective of this study was to determine the rarity status of the two important shorea species, i.e. S. laevis and S. leprosula, based on IUCN criteria, their habitat characteristics, and their association with other species, as one of the basis for determining their conservation strategy as a part of forest management. This study was conducted in three types of ecosystem (virgin forest, secondary forest, and fragmented forest) in Muara Teweh, Central Kalimantan.  Methodology used in this research includes vegetation and tree diversity analysis. Study results showed that both S. laevis and S. leprosula were included within category of “low risk” in the 3 types of ecosystem in the forest area being studied.  Habitat characteristics which determined the absence of S. laevis in the virgin forest habitat was the soil permeability which was too low, whereas other soil chemical and physical properties in the three types of ecosystems were relatively similar.  Presence of S. laevis were positively associated with species of S. uliginosa, Dialium platysepalum, Dipterocarpus ibmalatus, Palaquium rostatum, Vatica rasak, Adinandra sp., and Memecyclon steenis.  On the other hand,  S. leprosula were positively correlated with S. kunstleri, Castanopsis sp., Shorea sp., Quercus bennettii, Castanopsis argentea, and D. hasseltii

Determining the stem volume of a tree

    Get PDF
Determining the stem volume of a tree has long been a problem for foresters, whereas, the need for an accurate estimate of wood volume is becoming more important. six volume equations were used and compared, for both constructing and validating models using data collected from Gmelina arborea Roxb. in the area P.T. Wanaksita Nusantara, Province of Jambi, Indonesia. The best equation obtained from model construction (fitting) step for a data may not necessarily be the best performance (shown from bias, precision and accuracy) for another data set though collected from the same population. For testing the occuracy of model, model validation is an important step in model construction process in order to get the best tree volume equation

Segmentasi citra mengklasifikasi citra kedalam beberapa segmentasi berdasarkan determinasi jumlah total piksel setiap kelas, sedangkan filter rata-rata mengelompokkan citra berdasarkan rata-rata nilai angka dijital dalam ukuranwindow tertentu.

This research aim to establish a land use change model purposed to figure a spatial ecological equilibrium out from the land used activities. The analyzing of these land use change impacts were adopted from modeling methods, based from system thinking approach. Although the analytical constructions dominated by social sciences, all methodologies were drawn from more than one field of discipline to analyze the nature-society-economy relationships. These interdisciplinary orientation combining concepts has some advantages in recognizing most complex variables in the real world than another functional approaches. The model has verified to validate in villages around the HTI concession area of Jambi Province which is managed by PT Wirakarya Sakti (WKS), and resulted some behavior patterns of land use changed that showed in descriptions as a whole. At last, sensitivity analysis of this model - like a game - has developed the “what if” input variables to predict situation of the future, and has resulted some options of scenario as decision support to the policy system framework. Keywords: Ecologycal equilibrium, HTI pulp concession area, land use change, modeling, system thinking approach, decision support system, Jambi
