The Effect of Sonic Bloom Fertilizing Technology on The Seed Germination and Growth of Acacia mangium Willd Seedling
Acacia mangium Willd is one of the promising wood species, it is a fast growing species and can be used as raw materials for pulp, furniture and wood working. Musi Hutan Persada Company has planted Acacia mangium Willd in large scale for pulp processing raw materials and for wood working industry. The faculty of forestry of the Nusa Bangsa University in collaboration with the Musi Hutan Persada have examined the effect of “Sonic Bloom” to the Acacia mangium Willd germination and seedling growth. The results of the research are the following : (1) The seed germination with “Sonic Bloom” provided percented of germination of 82%, better than those without “Sonic Bloom”, i.e. only 34%; (2) With Sonic Bloom, the height of 80-days old seedling is 129.6 cm higher than those without “Sonic Bloom”of only 90.7 cm; (3) the diameter of 80-days old seedling with “Sonic Bloom” is 0,24 cm higher than those without “Sonic Bloom” harving diameters of only 0.19 cm. The study concludes that sonic bloom treatment is very useful for the seed germination and the growth of Acacia mangium Willd seedling
Carbon Emission Reduction Potential through Sustainable Forest Management in Forest Concession of PT Salaki Summa Sejahtera, Province of West Sumatera
A management unit (MU) of a forest concession holder implementing the sustainable forest management (SFM) principles, could be involved in reducing Emmission from Reforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) and carbon trading project. The fact the strategic in implementing the REDD+ and carbon trading in MU level is still lack of pilot project and methodology. Therefore, some scenarios must be developed and tested to find out the best potential of carbon credit in MU level. The objectives of the research were: to calculate carbon credit in some SFM scenarios, to analyze of carbon trading project feasibility, and to determine carbon stock recovery period of logged over area (LOA). The result revealed that carbon stock and carbon credit of LOA was affected by timber cutting intensity. The 6th scenario with lowest annual allowable cutting (AAC) obtained greater carbon credit and profit coming from timber harvesting income and carbon trading. In other hand, this scenario has shortest duration of carbon stock recovery period (27 years) and shorter than its cutting cycle. In this case, the MU has to recalculate and to decrease its AAC to have highest benefits from carbon trading in the same cutting cycle period. It will provide double benefits from carbon trading, those are contribution in achieving the SFM purposes (production, ecology, social) and climate change mitigation
Application of Tank Model for Predicting Water Balance and Flow Discharge Components of Cisadane Upper Catchment
The concept of hydrological tank model was well described into four compartments (tanks). The first tank (tank A) comprised of one vertical (qA0) and two lateral (qA1 and qA2) water flow components and tank B comprised of one vertical (qB0) and one lateral (qB1) water flow components. Tank C comprised of one vertical (qC0) and one lateral (qC1) water flow components, whereas tank D comprised of one lateral water flow component (qD1). These vertical water flows would also contribute to the depletion of water flow in the related tanks but would replenish tanks in the deeper layers. It was assumed that at all lateral water flow components would finally accumulate in one stream, summing-up of the lateral water flow, much or less, should be equal to the water discharge (Qo) at specified time concerns. Tank A received precipitation (R) and evapo-transpiration (ET) which was its gradient of (R-ET) over time would become the driving force for the changes of water stored in the soil profiles and those water flows leaving the soil layer. Thus tank model could describe th vertical and horizontal water flow within the watershed. The research site was Cisadane Upper Catchment, located at Pasir Buncir Village of Caringin Sub-District within the Regency of Bogor in West Java Province. The elevations ranged 512 –2,235 m above sea level, with a total drainage area of 1,811.5 ha and total length of main stream of 14,340.7 m. The land cover was dominated by forest with a total of 1,044.6 ha (57.67%), upland agriculture with a total of 477.96 ha (26.38%), mixed garden with a total of 92.85 ha(5.13%) and semitechnical irigated rice field with a total of 196.09 ha (10,8%). The soil was classified as hydraquent (96.6%) and distropept (3.4%). Based on the calibration of tank model application in the study area, the resulting coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.72 with model efficiency (NSE)of= 0.75, thus tank model could well illustrate the water flow distribution of Cisadane Upper Catchment. The total water yield was 2.789 mm year-1 from 3,624 mm year-1 of total annual precipitation. The total water yield comprised of a total runoff of 47.39% and 49.23% of sub surface flow and base flow
Institutional Development to Build a Succesfull Local Collective Action in Forest Management from Arau Watershed Unit
The study was aimed to build institution model of sustainable forest management, through analysis of action arena, community attributes and forest management rules in Arau Watershed Unit Management Area. To achieve sustainable forest management, recognition and incorporation of local institutions in forest policy formulation is very important because it had great potential for collective action and had characteristics of common pools resources sustainable management needed. To achieve a successful local collective action, the institution must be had: the rules in use suitable with local community norms; the organization has power to give reward and punishment as well as recognized and respected by society; specific management according location; rules of the game was made participatory; there are economic incentives for owners and users; there is an instrument for controlling sustainable use; and conflict resolution through negotiations to reach an concencus agreement. The finding of institutional models analysis show that co-management model between government and local communities, called Nagari Forest Management Model is more suitable, because it gives greater opportunities for indigenous rights recognition to communal forest, until the capacity of villages get better, then the choice of forest management can be shifted into Nagari Community Based Forest Management Model
Estimation of Total Carbon Stocks in Soil and Vegetation of Tropical Peat Forest in Indonesia
The study was conducted in the forest concession area of PT. Diamond Raya Timber, Riau Province, Indonesia. Measurement and calculation carbon stocks in soil and vegetation of tropical peat forest should be done accurately to anticipate carbon trading. The objective of the study is to estimate carbon stocks in soil and vegetation in 4 forest conditions. The study found that biomass and carbon stocks in the soil was 8 times higher than in the vegetation in primary forest condition, and 10 times in logged over forest and secondary forest condition. Carbon stocks in vegetation and soil were 189.45 ton C ha-1 and 1537.37 ton C ha-1 in primary forest, 161.76 ton C ha-1, and 1713.77 ton C ha-1 in logged over area, 139.05 ton C ha-1 and 1486.39 ton C ha-1 in secondary forest, and 43.09 ton C ha-1 and 1205.59 ton C ha-1 in degraded forest. Allocation of carbon stocks in the standing trees in primary forest, logged over area, secondary forest, and degraded forest were 70, 60, 62, and 7% respectively
Habitat Suitability Modeling of Javan Rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus Desmarest 1822) Ujung Kulon National Park
Javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus Desmarest 1822) is the rarest species among 5 species of rhinos in the world. Its distribution is currently limited only in Ujung Kulon National Park (UKNP), Indonesia. Due to the small population size and its limited distribution, it is listed as critically endangered species in the IUCN Redlist. The main objectives of this research were: 1) to identify the dominant habitat components that determine the presence of javan rhino in UKNP; 2) to analyze habitat suitability of javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus Desmarest 1822) in UKNP using geographical information system; and 3) to examine its habitat condition. Results of the research found eight components identified to be crucial for Javan rhino habitat and appropriate for spatial modelling of habitat suitability, of which four were the most dominant factors influencing the frequency of javan rhino presence. The striving of nature silk in Kabupaten Sukabumi keeps decreasing whereas, market opportunity and potential for nature is good, for this time being. For knowing development strategic of striving nature silk correctly, it need to be done an aprroachment system of replacement SWOT analysis (strategis analysis) and ISM (interpretative Structural Modelling) technique (structural analysis). This research will identify internal and external factor and produce structural models.The most powerful factor that influence the striving of nature silk is nature condition (climate, soil and topography). The weakness factor are limited capital and access. As opportunity element factor and treatment of cocoon needs still high and germ and disease of murbei leaves also silk worm.Prosperity of nature silk worm influence a lot of society sector especially farmer. In way to make it success needs very qualified human resources, an expert on this work and good management. Hoped with fulfilled need, will solved a lot of obstructions one of them is limited capital and access. The purpose of this program as good as possible is for increasing nature silk work. Involved all sorts of institution to realize this aim will be need, one of them is Forestry Department which will decide fact in striving of nature silk
Spacing and Genotype on Height and Diameter Growth of Four Eucalyptus under Short Rotation
In this paper, the dynamic change in tree height, diameter at breast height (dbh), and ground line diameter (gld) at different density was studied. Trial sites were established in Chepkoilel and Nangili areas of western Kenya. Eight tree species (2 hybrid eucalyptus clones; GC 10 and GC 167), 1 eucalyptus local landrace, 2 agroforestry (Grevillea robusta and Markhamia lutea), 1 pure eucalyptus (Eucalyptus grandis), and 2 preferred local species (Maesopsis eminii and Khaya nyasica) were planted on each site. This paper however focuses on the effect of spacing on the height, dbh, and gld growth of the 4 eucalyptus genotypes viz (2 eucalyptus hybrid clones, 1 eucalyptus local landrace, and 1 pure Eucalyptus grandis). These were planted at 10 different spacings (0.6-, 0.8-, 1.0-, 1.2-, 1.4-, 1.6-, 1.8-, 2.0-, 2.2-, and 2.4-by-1.0 m; these being some of the most common spacings used by farmers) in a Nelder radial experimental design in 4 replications. Measurements of height, dbh, and gld were taken at intervals of 6 months over 3 years. The data was subjected to an analysis of variance to determine if there were statistically significant (p = 0.05) differences in tree growth with spacing levels. The results showed that tree growth was significantly influenced by spacing and genotype with the best spacing being 2.4-by-1.0 m, indicated that the relative growth rates of height dbh, gld, and increased with increasing the distance between trees but decreased with age. After 3 years the best spacing for optimal overall tree growth was 2.4-by-1.0 m and GC10 being the outstanding genotype. Of the 2 sites, trees performed better in Nangili. The results from this study further pinpoint the importance of species-site-matching using improved germplasm and planting trees at the correct spacing for optimal growth
Stakeholders Analysis on the Management of Danau Sentarum National Park Kapuas Hulu Regency, West Kalimantan
Danau Sentarum National Park (DSNP) is one protected area having vital roles in supporting the community livelihood of Kapuas Hulu Regency and West Kalimantan Province. Unfortunately, its presence is currently threatened due to various activities and overlapping interests. Hence, the management of DSNP could not be carried out by a single institution, requiring the support of other institutions. A possible approach was to conduct Stakeholders Analysis. This study analyzed stakeholders interests on DSNP management. The study was conducted in DSNP and respondents were selected using snowball sampling. There were 18 stakeholders identified as being involved in the management of DSNP of which 5 were classified as subject, 1 as key player, 6 as context setter, and 6 as crowd. There were 3 relationships between each stakeholder that were identified, that of conflict, complementary, and cooperation. Generally, the identified stakeholders played roles consistent with their main tasks and function. However, to better manage DSNP, synchronization among stakeholders was still necessary
KAJIAN KOMPETISI TUMBUHAN EKSOTIK YANG BERSIFAT INVASIF TERHADAP POHON HUTAN PEGUNUNGAN ASLI TAMAN NASIONAL GUNUNG GEDE PANGRAN
Up to now, montane rain forest of Gunung Gede-Pangrango National Park, faces problem in the form of invasion of exotic plant species into the area. Location of the area that borders with various land uses, such as Botanical Garden and agricultural land, make it very susceptible toward invasion of plant species from outside the area. The collapse of large trees which normally constitute a mechanism of natural regeneration, was in fact stimulating the development of exotic species, particularly those which were invasive, inside the area. The objective of this research was to test the competitive ability of endemic species, which in this case was represented by Cleystocalyx operculata and Mischocarpus pentapetalus, toward exotic plant species, represented by Austroeupatoriun inulaefolium and Passiflora ligularis, during 5 months of study. Growth rate of exotic plant species, as well as the dry weight biomass, were larger than those of endemic species. Indirect estimation of competitive ability showed that competitive ability (β) of endemic species were 4-5 times less, namely 0.0274 (for C. operculata) and 0.0251 (for M. pentapetalus); as compared with those of exotic species, namely 0.125 (for P. ligularis) and 0.1104 (for A. inulaefolium). Direct test also proved that competitive ability (β) of endemic species was lower than that of exotic species, as shown by relative crowding value < 1. Estimation of future competitive ability, using diagram of input/ output ratio, showed also the disability of endemic species to compete with exotic species, where position of input/output ratio points were parallel with equilibrium line y=x. Considering those facts, there is urgent need for controlling these invasive exotic species inside the National Park area to maintain the sustainability of biodiversity and regeneration of endemic species in montane rain forest of Gunung Gede–Pangrango National Park
