Growth Performance of One Year Old Seedlings of Ironwood (Eusideroxylon zwageri Teijsm. & Binn.) Varieties
Four Eusideroxylon zwageri Teijsm. & Binn. varieties had been described. A study on growth performance of one-year old seedlings of E. zwageri varieties had been conducted to study the comparison of shoot growth performance and survival among E. zwageri varieties. The varieties were exilis, grandis, ovoidus, and zwageri. The study was conducted in Jambi, Indonesia for one year using complete randomized design. Four E. zwageri varieties were used as factor with 6 replications. Each consists of 6 seedlings therefore, the total number of seedlings were 144. The results showed that survival and shoot growth performance of E. zwageri seedlings were significantly different among varieties. Stem height of E. zwageri seedlings was significantly different among some varieties. The results related to stem diameter showed different characteristics among E. zwageri seedlings, zwageri variety had the biggest diameter. It was significantly different from ovoidus and exilis, but not significantly different from grandis. The differences among E. zwageri seedlings in shoot dry weight parameter were identical to the parameter of stem diameter. The lowest value of branch angle belonged to zwageri. Based on Duncan multiple range test, it was significantly different from other varieties except grandis. Generally, zwageri shows the best growth performance among seedlings of E. zwageri varieties
Noise, Worker Perception, and Worker Concentration in Timber Harvesting Activity
Timber harvesting activities are unquestionably related with high risk of work accidents and health disorders.Such activities were not only burdened the workers with heavy physical workloads due to uneasy workingenvironment, and massive work materials and tools, but also physiopsychologically burdened workers as theywere imposed with both mechanical and acoustic vibrations (noise) produced by the chainsaw. However, it is acommon practice that most of the workers still ignored the importance of the use of noise reduction devices suchas earmuff or ear plug. This study was aimed to reveal the factual effects of noise on work concentration of theworkers to provide a scientific basis in supporting efforts in improving workers’ attitude. The results confirmedthat chainsaw might produce noise during operation. Noise intensities received by both right and left ears werenot significantly different, indicating that left-handed and normal workers received similar degree of noise inboth side of ears. Further, results also showed that there was a significant difference on the perception and workconcentration of chainsaw operators versus sedentary people to the noise. These findings proved that hearingability of chainsaw operators had declined due to frequent noise exposure.Keywords: timber harvesting, physio-psychological disorder, noise, chainsa
Kesiapan Produsen Mebel di Jepara dalam Menghadapi Sertifikasi Ekolabel
Furniture is a big 4 of Indonesia’s export commodities with palm oil, textiles, and rubber outside the oil and gas. Value-added is enjoyed by tens of millions of people involved in the value chain. But, the business is experiencing severe challenges to the issue of certification and forest products (green or certified furniture) and the scarcity of wood. Certified furniture is intended for preservation of forest resources, the healthy processing of furniture making as well as improving the welfare of artisans. From the supply side of certified furniture, large producers have been prepared while small producers are not ready. From the demand side, domestic consumers only want to pay less for certified furniture, while British and Norway consumers are 16% 7.5% respectively. The increase in willingness to pay is lower than the certified furniture prices increased between 6–30%., Certification can be done by a third party accredited by the Tropical Forest Trust (TFT), Indonesian Ecolabel Institute (LEI), or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). When the increase in production costs are higher than the desire of consumers to pay, then the certified furniture becomes difficult to be realized. Need specific strategies to market certified furniture. This article is a case study in Jepara furniture craftsmen who accounted for 10% of national exports
UJI KETURUNAN SAUDARA TIRI ( Half - sib ) SENGON ( Paraserianthes falcataria L. Nielsen) DI TAMAN HUTAN BLOK CIKABAYA
Analysis of genetic parameters in seedling seed orchard progeny trial of Paraserianthes falcataria at Taman Hutan Blok Cikabayan are very important to decide to continue the breeding program. The analysis was coducted on estimation of individual heritability and genetic correlation between traits. Result of analysis shows that individual heritability for height, diameter and form traits.
Keberlanjutan Penatakelolaan Zona Pemanfaatan Tradisional dalam Kawasan Konservasi Laut Taman Nasional Teluk Cenderawasih Papua Barat
Understanding the governability of traditional use zone (TUZ) on Marine National Parks is still debated due to various reasons since successful implemented of the governing system could be observed in some areas only. There is a need to assess the contributions and limitations of governance performance sustainability. Using the Cenderawasih Bay National Park as a case, we studied the governance system (GS), system to be governed (SG), and interactive governance (IG) in managing TUZ. Multi-dimension scaling analysis showed that the existing management showed low sustainability (36%) caused by limitation of stakeholders capacity and violations of rules (GS), impact of live fish fishing, coastal ecosystem degradation and low income (SG), adaptive management and feedback from monitoring and evaluation that were not be able to create effective governance (IT). Improvement could be achieved by increasing the integration of these three systems, in which social-ecology system benefit could work under effective governance. This paper also supported the previous finding that household income alternative was the priority for improving management and conservation. It is justified that both direct and indirect benefits to the society or stakeholders could be provided by well-performed governance
Tradisi dan Perubahan Budi Daya Pohon di Desa Rambahan Kuansing dan Desa Ranggang Tanah Laut
The phenomenon of widespread tree cultivation by local community in some countries during the last three decades has been explained by researchers with a macro perspective. This study is to understand the phenomenon at the micro level and from the native (peasant or farmer) point of view. This study aims to explain the tradition and changes in tree cultivation. Theoris economic system were used as the basis to explain the tradition and changes in tree cultivation in Rambahan village community of the Kuansing District and Ranggang Village community of Tanah Laut District. Case study method was used in this study. The data were collected from informants through individual interviews and focused group discussions. The results of this study show that the cultivation of trees has been practiced and institutionalized in the everyday lives of local people and passed down from generation to generation, as well as a source of socio-economic stability of families. Factors that farmers take into consideration in the selection of tree crops to be cultivated are price, easy to sell, harvesting intensity, knowledge and skills, labor availability (particularly family labor), and capital availability. The results of this study also indicate that some elements of the economic system of Ranggang and Rambahan communities have the characteristics of capitalism adherent, while some other elements have the characteristics of pre-capitalism. In other words, two communities are in a transition between pre-capitalism and capitalism as shown in the practice of tree cultivation
Soil Properties in Natural Forest Destruction and Conversion to Agricultural Land,in Gunung Leuser National Park, North Sumatera Province
Destruction of the Gunung Leuser National Park area of North Sumatera Province through land clearing and land cover change from natural forest to agricultural land. Less attention to land use and ecosystem carrying capacity of the soil can cause soil degradation and destruction of flora, fauna, and wildlife habitat destruction. Environmental damage will result in a national park wild life will come out of the conservation area and would damage the agricultural community. Soil sampling conducted in purposive sampling in natural forest and agricultural areas. Observation suggest that damage to the natural forest vegetation has caused the soil is not protected so that erosion has occurred. Destruction of natural forest into agricultural are as has caused damage to soil physical properties, soil chemical properties, and biological soil properties significantly. Forms of soil degradation caused by the destruction of natural forests, which is an increase in soil density (density Limbak) by 103%, a decrease of 93% organic C and soil nitrogen decreased by 81%. The main factors causing soil degradation is the reduction of organic matter and soil erosion due to loss of natural forest vegetation. Criteria for soil degradation in Governance Regulation Number 150/2000 can be used to determine the extent of soil degradation in natural forest ecosystems
Waste of Felling and On-Site Production of Teak Squarewood of the Community Forest
Major suppliers of teak wood for the raw material of furniture industry in Indonesia are Perum Perhutani, community forests, and private forests. Community teak forest management produce roundwood or squarewood, in which squarewood is produced on the felling site by the use of chainsaw after felling and bucking activities. Utilization of teak wood from community forest has been practiced for decades, however information on the extent of utilization and the quantity of wood waste have not been published to a greater extent. The present research was intended to determine and analyze the extent of utilization and teak wood waste produced from felling and bucking, and on-site squarewood production of community forests. Quantification of wood waste from felling and bucking was based on the whole tree method, while that of squarewood production was based on the percentage of yield. It was found that the quantity of teak felling and bucking wood waste in community forest was reaching 28% of felled wood volume that consisted of branch and twig (46.15%), upper trunk (30.77%), short cut off (15.38%), and stumps (7.69%). The largest part of the wood waste of teak felling and bucking satisfied the requirement as raw material of wood working industry according to Indonesian National Standard. On-site production of squarewood increased the quantity of wood waste in the forests (in the form of slabs and sawdust)
New Idea for National Park Zoning System: a Synthesis between Biodiversity Conservation and Customary Community\u27s Tradition
The establishment of national park in customary region had aroused conflic since it had not incorporate traditional management system in its management system. The objectives of this research is to develop such policies for national park zonation that amalgamating the national-global interests for conservation on the one side and the customary community interests on the other side. Result shows that adaptation was needed toward the prevailing science-based ecologically-oriented regulation on zoning plan, so it would incorporate the community\u27s custom in order to achieve effective management of national park. Appropriate and applicable zoning can be achieved through implementation of management mindset with customary people livelihood perspectives, zone establishment which give priority to the achievement of national park functions rather than the fulfillment of zone requirements, and adaptation of zone formation and criteria toward traditional land use as efforts to accommodate the interest of biodiversity conservation and customary people livelihood
Efektivitas Kelembagaan Lokal dalam Pengelolaan Sumber Daya Hutan pada Masyarakat Rumahkay di Seram Bagian Barat, Maluku
Debate on the role of local institution in ensuring natural resources sustainability was re-tested in this research. The local institution in question consisted of kewang, church, and sasi darat (rules) being practiced in the management of dusun (forest) in Rumahkay village. This study described the effectiveness of local institution in the sustainable management of dusun under various types of property rights i.e. dusun dati, dusun negeri, dusun pusaka, and dusun parusahaan. Case study method was used in this research. Data were collected through semi-structured interview, participant observation, field observation, dusun stand measurement, and focus group discussion (FGD). The results of this study showed that Rumahkay community had for generations categorized their forest and regulated the rights of ownership and their utilizations through institutional development such as sasi negeri and kewang based upon mata rumah i.e. mata rumah anakele, anauweng, and anarete. While Sasi Gereja complemented kewang institution to be very effective in rules enforcement based on understanding, trust, and obedience. Overall, the strong local institution had been able to enhance the performance of dusun as shown by the vegetation density in dusun dati, dusun negeri, dusun pusaka, and dusun parusahaan
