    Propagation of Bajakah and Akar Kuning to Support Bioprospecting of Traditional Medicine from Peat Swamp Forests: Prospect and Challenges

    Bajakah and akar kuning are known as traditional medicine from peatlands, which are usually extracted from their natural habitats. Over extraction and illegal cutting have become a threat to the extinction of both species. Therefore, propagation and cultivation of those medicinal plants are necessary to be conducted outside forest areas to meet the demand of raw materials of traditional medicine and minimize the risk of species extinction. The experiment of stem cutting propagation of two bajakah species (Uncaria acida and Salacia sp.) and akar kuning (Fibraurea tinctoria) were conducted separately in two different nurseries. The results showed that stem cuttings of woody liana could produce more than one new shoot. The new shoots of U. acida and Salacia sp. grew after eight weeks, with a survival rate of 96% and 50%, respectively. The survival rate of F. tinctoria stem cutting after six weeks was 83.3%. These indicate that bajakah and akar kuning can be propagated and cultivated to support the bioprospecting of traditional medicinal plants. Despite some challenges, such as limitation of akar kuning and bajakah population at the pole stage in their habitats, it is an initial step of a long process of bajakah and akar kuning bioprospecting

    Independent Smallholders\u27 Perceptions towards MSPO Certification in Sabah, Malaysia

    In a wake of concern towards sustainable palm oil products, the Malaysian government had continuously formulated various guidelines for palm oil industries in fulfilling the international sustainability requirement. In 2013, Malaysia has launched Malaysian sustainable palm oil (MSPO), which eventually become mandatory requirement in January 2020, including the independent smallholders. However, the numbers of independent smallholders that acquired MSPO was relatively low, stood at 30.66%. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the perceptions of independent smallholders towards MSPO in Malaysia. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection instrument that been distributed among 350 independent smallholders, with a response rate of 74.5%. Results from descriptive analysis showed that independent smallholders have a good perception towards MSPO certification. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis revealed that all three factors were significant to influence the perceptions, where the risk perception became the most important contributor. This study enhances the awareness of sustainability practices among independent smallholders and contributes to the implementation of MSPO certification. Since risk perception has emerged as the primary contributor, regulators or governing bodies must seriously consider risk mitigation concerning independent smallholders about risk exposure such as continuous monitoring to comply environment impact assessment requirement, improve the availability and accessibility of information and aggressive awareness campaign on MSPO. &nbsp

    Regression Models for Estimating Aboveground Biomass and Stand Volume Using Landsat-Based Indices in Post-Mining Area

    This paper describes the use of remotely sensed data to measure vegetation variables such as basal area, biomass and stand volume. The objective of this research was developed regression models to estimate basal area (BA), aboveground biomass (AGB), and stand volume (SV) using Landsat-based vegetation indices. The examined vegetation indices were SAVI, MSAVI, EVI, NBR, NBR2 and NDMI.   Regression models were developed based on least-squared method using several forms of equation, i.e., linear, exponential, power, logarithm and polynomial.  Among those models, it was recognized that the best fit of model was obtained from the exponential model, log (y) = ax + b for estimating BA, AGB & SV.  The MSAVI had been identified as the most accurate independent variable to estimates basal area with R² of 0.70 and average verification values of 16.39% (4%-32.66%); while the EVI become the best independent variable for estimating aboveground biomass (AGB) with R2 of 0.72 and average of verification values of 18,10% (9%-28.01%); and the NDMI was recognized to be the best independent variable to estimate stand volume with R2 of 0.69 and average of verification values of 24.37% (-15%-38.11%)

    Complexity of Unsolved Forest Tenurial Conflict: A Case of Way Terusan Forest Management Unit, Lampung Province, Indonesia

    Effective forest management is challenging to achieve when there is uncertainty about who controls forest areas. Land tenure issues can arise from local communities, immigrants, the private sector, or the government. Overlapping rights in forest areas are very likely to occur due to the licensing system\u27s lack of integration and the inaccuracy with which the problem of forest land use claims. The Forest area of Register 47 is the case where the forest tenurial conflict resolution is theoretical and takes into account the existence of forest communities and conflict resolution programs that have been implemented by the Forest Management Unit (FMU). This study employed case study approach carried out with an in-depth study in the historical study about the conflicts and juridical review in Way Terusan FMU, Lampung Province. The collected data was then validated by triangulating scheme by the observation and documentation. The findings  show that in terms of legal, FMU is the legal authority in forest area organizations, especially after regional regulation since 2019. However, the encroachment began in the 1990s when about 900 households were relocated to the area without the Forestry Ministry accord. Various legalization permits were submitted to the central government, but they were not deemed as a viable option. Since the regional regulation of forest area law\u27s introduction in 2019, the FMU has been the primary actor in forest management. In order to resolve all conflicts, the FMU might apply for some effective forestry partnership cooperation programs

    Previous studies are most focusing on the species identification and habitat used by cuscus, while habitat changes are the most threats on cuscus. Habitat changes caused by the operation of logging concession such as PT Wijaya Sentosa creates an impact to the habitat selection of cuscus, which is highly dependent on forest cover. Efforts to protect cuscus species in production forests need to be carried out to ensure their sustainability habitat. This study aims to determine habitat preference of cuscus and model the suitability habitat of cuscus. The Neu index calculation is used to measure the level of habitat preference, while the habitat sustainability map is modelled by biotic, abiotic, and human disturbance components into MaxEnt application. Vegetation data is analyzed to describe tree density, tree richness, and strata using of cuscus by SexFI application. The study showed that the most preferred habitat by cuscus is LoA 2018 because LoA 2018 had the most species richness so cuscus might be able to choose their vegetation food. The habitat suitability of cuscus in PT Wijaya Sentosa covers 21,116.59 ha and didn\u27t follow the pattern of increasing Et+ logging but was strongly influenced by logged blocks as much as 55.2% contribution

    Polarization of Stakeholder Orientation Towards Geotourism Development in the Mount Slamet and Serayu Mountainous Areas, Central Java Province

    The success of geotourism development is strongly influenced by the orientation (perceptions, motivations and preferences) of the stakeholders. An aim of the  study was to analyze the polarization of stakeholder orientation towards geotourism development in the Mount Slamet and Serayu Mountainous areas, Central Java Province. Research instrument used a closed-ended questionnaire following the scoring pattern of "One Score One Indicator Scoring System”. The sample of respondents was 8 stakeholder groups with a total of 1,252 respondents. The characteristics of the stakeholder was analysed by quantitative descriptive, while the indication of the polarization of the stakeholder orientation was analyzed by using the one way Anova statistical test. Results indicated that the polarization of stakeholder orientation had a positive direction and scale of polarization was strong. This conditions showed that there is a gap in the value of stakeholder orientation which makes the performance of geotourism development less than optimal. It is necessary to improve the quality of collaboration and cooperation so that there is no polarization in the orientation between stakeholders to achieve the sustainable geotourism development

    Evaluation of Soft Skill Training to Strengthen Collaborative Management of National Parks in Sumatera, Indonesia

    A series of soft skill training in four national parks of Sumatra Island were conducted by PILI Green Network NGO, DG of Natural Resources and Essential Ecosystem Conservation of the MoEF, and Sumatran Tiger Project-UNDP for 12 months in 2019. The training aims at improving soft skill capacity of the national park staff on conflict management and collaborative actions with the communities in the buffer zone. This paper aims 1) to evaluate the soft skill training programme achievement by employing Kirkpatrick’s evaluation model; 2) to analyse factors of Training Program participants that influence on the individual soft skill enhancement by using multiple linear regression analysis. The results show that soft skill training was effective to increase the knowledge and skill of the participating staff, especially in participatory approaches, conflict management, and the development of a collaborative business model. Three factors, including work experience, the suitability of background education and similar training experience, have significant influences on the individual soft skill enhancement. Training design, which was bottom-up and participatory based on the needs of the resorts as a spearheading of national park management, contributes to the success of the training implementation. The training has created a ‘common room’ for the participating staff and the communities in terms of opening communication and development of collaborative action plans at each national park. &nbsp

    Environment Degradation and Rural Livelihood of Mulawarman Community in Indonesia

    This article aims to describe the livelihoods of communities around the mining area through cases in Mulawarman Village, Tenggarong Seberang District, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. These findings show that the vegetation index value in Mulawarman Village degraded from 2014 (0.35) until 2019 (0.33). It shows forest degradation, which affects the livelihoods of rural communities that depend on agriculture or forestry. The leading cause of the decline in the vegetation index value is the expansion of coal mining activities. Indirectly, coal mining activities have limited the ability of the Mulawarman village community to access natural resources. Some residents of Mulawarman village have decided to sell agricultural land and move to other places. However, residents still survive to live in Mulawarman village by starting livestock and trading businesses to maintain their livelihoods. &nbsp
