Creating Props: Improving Writing Skills of Teaching Materials of Elementary Teacher Education Students through Project-Based Learning Model
This study aimed to determine the improvement in writing skills of science teaching materials for elementary school teachers students through the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model. This study used a quasi-experimental method with One Group Pretest-Posttest Design using portfolio assessment sheets to write science teaching materials. Data were analyzed using a T-test. This study's subjects were pre-service teacher students who contracted Natural Science Learning courses in the Elementary Teacher Education Program. The study results indicated that PjBL could increase pre-service teachers' skills in developing teaching materials relevant to the 21st-century skills, students' character, and the applicable curriculum. This result is evidenced by the results of the assessment, which increased significantly from 2.04 to 3.25. It is also based on the Wilcoxon test that Asymp.Sig. (2-tailed) 0.05 which is 0.000. It means that there is an influence in the form of an increase in the PjBL model's use of the writing skills of science teaching materials for elementary teacher students. This study recommends that the PjBL model can be used as an alternative learning model to improve the writing skills of teaching materials for students
Teachers’ Assessment of Inattentive Classroom Behavior Among Primary School Students in Ilorin City, Kwara State, Nigeria
Inattentive behavior could become unnoticed but it is often a major constraint to effective classroom instruction and students’ performance. This research investigated teachers’ assessment of inattentive classroom behavior among primary school students in Ilorin city, Kwara State, Nigeria. The research is a survey research with the population consisted of 1,568 teachers, while 160 participants were purposively selected. A questionnaire type of instrument was used in the research. The results showed a reliability coefficient of r = 0.81 after conducting the test-retest reliability. The research question was analyzed with descriptive statistics while the hypotheses were tested with t-test and ANOVA at the 0.05 level of significance. Inattentive classroom behavior was high among primary school students as assessed by teachers. Teachers’ assessment of students’ inattentive behavior was similarly based on gender and qualification but different based on work experience. It was recommended that early childhood education/primary school teachers and counselors as well as other stakeholders in primary education should synergize to mitigate the high level of inattentive classroom behavior among students in order to enhance teaching-learning
The Effectiveness of Science Project Learning based on Entrepreneurship Model to Improve Elementary Students’ Collaborative Skills
Collaborative skills are among four essential life skills that students need to master in the 21st century. The fifth-grader of elementary school students' low collaborative skills encourage the researcher to develop a science project learning model with an entrepreneurship model to improve these skills. The purpose of this research is to determine the effectiveness of the learning model by implementing quasi-experiment, with one group pre-test and post-test design. Data analysis methods used were t-test, N-Gain analysis, and one-way analysis of variance (One Way Anova) to determine if there was an improvement after learning. The results of the analysis using the t-test showed a significant increase in pre- and post-test (p 0.05), with post-test values better than pre-test (negative t). The results of the N-Gain analysis showed the average increase in student scores in the high category (≥0.70), and the results of the analysis of the one-track variance showed no difference in each group (p 0.05). In general, the findings indicate that the learning model is effective in improving the collaborative skills of elementary school students
Reading Comprehension through the FIVES Model and Guided Reading Model to Improve Critical Thinking Ability in the Industrial Revolution Era 4.0
Elementary students' critical thinking skills are one of the components developed in 21st Century learning. However, these critical thinking skills are still very shallow and far from expectations. It was proven by the results of international surveys that show low average scores. Likewise, the results of the pretest critical thinking skills of fifth-grade students in 2 elementary schools in Sukabumi Regency showed a low average value. This study aims to determine the increase in students' critical thinking skills in learning to read comprehension through the use of the FIVES Model and Guided Reading Model in the Industrial Revolution Era 4.0. The research method uses quasi-experimental with Static Group Pretest-Postest Design. The subject of the research was fifth-grade elementary school students. SDN 4 Cicurug implements the FIVES Model, and SDN 2 Purwasari implements the Guided Reading Model. The results showed that the use of these two models could improve the critical thinking skills of elementary students. However, the increase in students' critical thinking skills through the FIVES Model compared to the Guided Reading Model in reading comprehension in the Industrial Revolution Era 4.0
Developing Primary School Students’ Environmental Literacy by Utilizing Scraps
One aspect of environmental literacy is that there is an action from someone who is trying to reduce environmental pollution. For primary school students, this effort can be done by processing dry waste into useful items. Processed garbage can be made into scraps that sell for sale or just simple handicrafts. This research was aimed at developing environmental literacy through the use of scraps in primary schools. The research employed a quantitative approach with quasy experimental method. The sample of the research was fifth grade primary school students who were randomly selected. Then the data collection techniques were conducted with the cognitive tests, practice, and attitude questionnaires. Meanwhile, data analysis process employed the inference statistics. The results showed that the activity of utilizing scrap affected the environmental literacy of the students. The aspect that experienced a quite good change was the performance aspect in the form of carrying out used scrap activities. Therefore, the use of scraps could be an effort to build the environmental literacy of primary school students
The Effect of VBA for Microsoft Excel as Teaching Material to Improve Prospective Elementary School Teachers' Mathematical Conceptual Understanding
This research is motivated by the low ability to understand mathematical concepts possessed by prospective elementary school teacher students. This study aims to see the achievement and improvement of students' mathematical understanding abilities that use Microsoft Excel-based VBA teaching materials with those using conventional learning. This study uses a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent pre-test and post-test control group design. This study's population were all second-semester elementary school teacher candidates in one private university in West Java, Indonesia. The sample in this study was 70 prospective 2nd-grade elementary school teacher candidates. The instrument used in this study was a test of understanding mathematical concepts. The results showed: 1) learning using VBA Microsoft Excel as a teaching material was able to improve students' ability to understand mathematical concepts; 2) learning using Microsoft Excel VBA as teaching material is better than conventional learning; and 3) students can be enthusiastic, active and motivated in learning mathematics with VBA Microsoft Excel
Influence of Parental Monitoring on Adolescents’ Deviant Behaviors as Expressed by Married Adults in Ilorin Metropolis
Deviant behavior is detrimental to adolescents, and parental monitoring is necessary to forestall this act. Consequently, this study investigated the influence of parental monitoring on adolescents' deviant behavior as expressed by married adults in the Ilorin metropolis. This study also investigated moderating variables, including gender, age, family type, and religion, on the respondents' view. It employed a descriptive survey method where 200 married adults were selected through simple random and purposive sampling techniques. The participants responded to a questionnaire titled 'Influence of Parental Monitoring on Deviant Behavior Questionnaire' (IPMDBQ).' The instrument's validity was conducted by a team of five experts from Nigeria, and the reliability yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.72. Besides, t-test and ANOVA statistical tools were employed to test the hypotheses at an alpha level of 0.05. The result revealed a positive influence of parental monitoring on adolescents' deviant behavior. It was found that there was no significant difference in the respondents' views based on gender, age, family type, and religion. Therefore, it is recommended that parents should monitor their wards appropriately to forestall deviant behavior among adolescents in Nigerian society
Survey of the Implementation of Professional Learning Community (PLC) Program in Primary Schools
This research aims at illustrating the implementation of Professional Learning Community (PLC) programs, which later will be used to be the basic data for the preparation of PLC program design that is applicable and easily implemented by the teachers. The low contribution and discontinuity of teachers in the PLC programs in primary schools have impacted on the lack of optimization of the PLC programs as a support for sustained improvement of teacher professionalism. This research employed a descriptive research design with a survey approach involving 52 primary school teachers in Sumerdang Regency. The research results revealed that even though the teachers’ understanding of the PLC program objectives was very high, the teachers’ understanding of the PLC program mechanism was still low. Thus, this resulted in the low level of the implementation of the PLC program in primary schools, both in programs and regulations. Therefore, further research is expected to produce the operational, structured, and applicable PLC programs in order to increase the teachers’ participation in implementing the PLC programs for improving teacher professionalism, and having a real impact on the improvement of the quality of learning in primary schools
Principal Leadership in the Implementation of Effective School Management
This research aims at describing the implementation of effective school management based on the principal leadership in one of Public Primary Schools in Sumedang Regency, West Java, Indonesia. The principal who implemented effective school management had the potential to produce high-achieving young generation because the school scope could optimize its function as an educational institution that carried out economic, humanitarian, social, political, cultural, and educational functions. One aspect that could support the implementation of effective school management was the principal leadership in making decisions, communicating, directing and developing the staff, solving problems and evaluating school activities. The data were collected through questionnaires, interviews and documentation studies. Furthermore, the results proved that the principal leadership was one of the main factors in implementing effective school management in terms of technology, school culture, information systems, and organizations
The Self-efficacy of Primary School Teachers in Teaching Mathematics: A Comparative Research on Teacher Training Program Products
This research aims at comparing the self-efficacy of primary school (SD – Sekolah Dasar) teachers who have taken teacher training program (PPG – Program Pelatihan Guru) on mathematics teaching and those who have not, which was seen from the personal belief sub-factors in teaching mathematics and the expected mathematics teaching outcomes. This research employed quantitative method with comparative research type to 198 samples. The data were analysed through T-test using SPSS. The result showed that there was no significant self-efficiency differences between primary school teachers who have taken PPG on mathematics teaching and those who have not. The results of this research indicated that self-efficacy was an important variable in pedagogical competence as it could influence the way teachers manage the classroom to attain maximum students’ achievement
