This article presents the author's examination of the dynamic aspects of farmers' knowledge on pest management strategies among rice farmers on the north coast of West Java. In detail, the author takes into account the differences in farmers' reception and learning process in the context of different modes of transmission: 1) the transferral of technology in the Green Revolution programme; and 2) the transmission of knowledge through the Integrated Pest Management Farmers Field Schools. In both settings, metaphor and analogy played a significant role in knowledge acquisition and transmission. Farmers' existing schemes or models of interpretation, or what is called as 'simplified world' of areas of particular experiences dominately underlying farmers' interpretation of the new transmitted ideas and concepts. In the transferral of technology, without the transmission of the related schemes, farmers' interpretations led to undesirable consequences resulting from the misleading and misused metaphors, e.g. 'medicine' for pesticide. On the other hand, knowledge transmission of the integrated pest management not only shifted the existing paradigm of pesticide use, but also enriched farmers' own knowledge through the improved ways of learning in the context of a continuous pest outbreak and economic constraints

    No full text
"...[...] the association of Indonesian with extralocal Power and affiliation, moreover, to speak Indonesian in Adonara is also to deny local roots and affiliations. Perhaps as the population becomes increasingly fluent in Indonesian, these dynamics will become less contentious; through the 1980s and 1990's, however, language choice was still a vehicle for conflicting political stances and affiliations. Nevertheless, as the politics of languages change so too will the languages of politics. From bahasa adat to bahasa protocol, ceremonial language forms in Adonara as throughout Nusa Tenggara Timur will continue to evolve, creating new and dynamic speech forms, like the speech given by Kiwan'ona's Kepala Desa.

In this article the author argues for the need to develop and use a new paradigm in examining the role of women. By considering the significant role women played in the recent economic crisis in Indonesia which has been neglected by various parties, including scholars, the author prefers strongly to use the paradigm 'critics' in the studies about women. She explains further the difference between this paradigm and the 'interpretive' and positivism' paradigms. The use of the new paradigm would enable the researcher to examine the relevant issues, carry out a participative approach, as well as change the disadvantaged situations and roles the women have

Mekanisasi Manusia dan Personifikasi Teknologi Menuju Keseimbangan

    No full text
The author begins his observation from a linguistic phenomenon in Bahasa Indonesia that indicates swapped roles and positions between machineries and workers. Many tools including vehicles and are treated as human beings. On the other hand, a lot more cases show that workers are treated as a part of technology, if not as the machine themselves. According to the author this happens simply because workers do not have their own paradigm. Workers in Indonesia, particularly in Java, think the way their employers do. Workers easily understand, and even support any sort of management decree or decision regarding their wages and economic benefit during the Asian financial crisis. The real human resources building, however, will never be achieved unless the workers can develop a perspective that is free from the penetration of the establishment and their high-tech machineries.&nbsp

Rasionalisasi Religius dalam Diskursus Keagamaan di Indonesia: Kasus Parmalim Batak Toba

    No full text
The Toba Batak, the followers of Parmalim (a local religion), have tried their best to preserve this local religion throughout the long oppression years by the Dutch and Christian missionary. The Parmalim practitioners did this up to recent times, in the midst of current ideas and assumptions about the civil-state religion based on 'monotheistic' belief. In this article, the author discusses the use of the concept 'religious rationalization' to refer to what the Parmalim followers have done in reconstructing their beliefs and religious practices. The author first examines the concept of 'religious rationalization' among anthropologists. He examines further the recent phenomenon of the civil-state religion, the Indonesian government's policies, its implications on the socio-religious-political situation among the Toba Batak, in particular among the Parmalim community, and the various existing interpretations

Transmisi Pengetahuan dan Nilai Budaya Masyarakat Indonesia Ditinjau dari Ajaran Kanuragan Jawa

    No full text
This article deals with systems of transmission of knowledge. The author looks into the kanuragan of the Javanese and its transformation into a modern form, along with the consequences of this transformation. Traditional kanuragan instruction is primarily oral and centers on intermediary roles and social intercourse, and it is conducted in space that is cosmographically meaningful. In contrast, modern individualistic instruction-rooted in early Greek philosophy and events in the European Middle Age-is highly formalized and linked to economic concerns, leading to an individualism with little regard for one's surroundings. The author suggests that the Javanese kanuragan has been partially transformed by this modern system. Thus, the transmission of knowledge is increasingly divorced from the transmission of morals and affect that form the basis of one's actions and social relationships. The author also notes that scholars would gain much from understanding the kanuragan in their efforts to understand current Indonesian Society
