Yu Hyŏngwŏn in the perspective of early-modern European intellectuals
This speculative essay suggests the possibility of a different perspective on the question whether Pan’gye Yu Hyŏngwŏn (1622-1673) was in any sense a modern thinker, the question that has preoccupied both Korean scholars and James Palais (and prompted them to provide quite different answers). What was Pan’gye’s thought like if seen from a seventeenth-century or eighteenth-century European perspective rather than a nineteenth- or twenty–century perspective, which has too frequently been applied to it? And might this perhaps change our perception of the usefulness of the concept of modernity? The focus will be on a number of intellectuals who were active in north-western Europe and particularly in The Netherlands, France and Germany.Asian Studie

Artificial intelligence at the crossroads of histopathology: a new era in endometrial cancer precision diagnostics and prognostics
This thesis explores the application of Artificial Intelligence, specially Deep Learning models, in computational pathology to improve diagnostics and prognostics in endometrial cancer (EC). While EC care has advanced through molecular classification, its clinical implementation remains challenging due to complexity, cost, and turnaround times. DL offers a promising alternative by leveraging routinely available H&E-stained slides to extract morphological features that correlate with molecular alterations and patient outcomes.The thesis presents two key contributions: (1) im4MEC, a DL model predicting EC molecular subtypes from histology images, and (2) HECTOR, a prognostic model predicting distant recurrence to support adjuvant treatment planning. Both models emphasize explainability and potential for real-world integration. Additionally, the thesis benchmarks foundation DL models across eight EC-related tasks, offering technical insights into future directions.By addressing limitations of current EC diagnostics and risk assessment, this work positions DL as a cost-effective, scalable tool for improving clinical decision-making. It ultimately advocates for a shift in data interpretation in histopathology and highlights AI's potential to enhance personalized cancer care.LUMC / Geneeskund

Functional conduction system mapping in sheep reveals Purkinje spikes in the free wall of the right ventricular outflow tract
Ablation of sites displaying Purkinje activity is highly effective against idiopathic ventricular fibrillation which often originates in the right ventricular outflow tract. However, during endocardial mapping Purkinje potentials are rarely, if never, detected in the right ventricular outflow tract. In the present study, we aimed to determine whether the Purkinje system extends into the right ventricular outflow tract. Hearts of five female sheep were blood-perfused in a Langendorff setup in which we performed epicardial and endocardial voltage mapping. During atrial pacing, the right ventricular outflow tract epicardium activated later than the epicardium of the left and right ventricular free walls. Endocardial mapping revealed Purkinje spikes at several sites in the free wall of the right ventricular outflow tract. In one heart, Purkinje spikes preceded ventricular premature beats during mapping, but were not visible during sinus rhythm. Subsequent immuno-histological examination showed a network of Connexin 40-positive Purkinje fibers across and within the wall of the right ventricular outflow tract. Quantitative analysis revealed that the transmural Purkinje fiber network was more abundant near the endocardium than epicardium. In conclusion, the Purkinje system extends into the right ventricular outflow tract of the sheep heart. These findings demonstrate that the sheep could be a valuable model for studying Purkinje-related arrhythmias in the right ventricular outflow tract.Stem cells & developmental biolog

Neurosurgical management of brain metastases in the era of modern oncology
Brain metastases arise when cancer cells spread to the brain from primary tumors located elsewhere in the body, such as the lungs, breasts, or skin. They represent the most common type of brain tumor, yet historically have received relatively limited scientific attention.This dissertation explores how the management of brain metastases has evolved in response to recent advances in systemic cancer therapies, including immunotherapy and targeted agents. These developments have led to prolonged survival in cancer patients, resulting in an increased incidence of brain metastases and a growing importance of local treatments such as neurosurgery and radiotherapy.The research evaluates the role of neurosurgical intervention across diverse patient populations, including those beyond traditional surgical indications—such as individuals with multiple or recurrent metastases. In addition, it investigates how surgery can be integrated with immunotherapy, and identifies key unanswered questions in current neurosurgical guidelines, which were largely established prior to the advent of modern oncological treatments.The findings of this dissertation support more individualized treatment strategies, contributing to personalized care that minimizes both over- and undertreatment. Understanding proenvironmental behavior: a model based on moral identity and connection to nature
Research has widely recognized the role of personal norms, connection to nature, and different forms of identity as importantfactors that promote individuals' environmental actions, as well as the role of moral disengagement to diminish these. However,less attention has been given to one's moral identity as a key driver for proenvironmental behavior. Extending current literature,we therefore explored if moral identity could promote proenvironmental behavior. Participants in our study (N = 359) completeda series of questionnaires. Correlational analyses, path analysis, mediation analysis, and moderation analysis, whererelevant, were used in testing four possible models. Only the model in which moral identity and connection to nature predictedproenvironmental behavior directly, and indirectly through the effect of personal norms and moral disengagement, showedgood fit indices. Our findings highlight the multifaceted nature of proenvironmental engagement, in which a sense of moralobligation to act sustainably could facilitate behavior stemming from moral identity and the feeling of being connected tonature.Social, Cognitive, and Affective Decision Makin
