Beyond 1 & 0 Opening Performance
Research backgroundLive audio-visual performance is an type of art performance that has proliferated in the art and entertainment market. While such performances have taken place with electronics and projections since at least the 1970s and historical precedent through theater goes back thousands of years, recent technologies have increased the possibilities for performers to improvise such performances and achieve new types of expression (Cooke 2010). The visual component of performances adds important information in communication of the meaning of a performance (Platz and Kopiez 2012). One mode of interaction with real-time systems is live coding, a practice which begun in the late 20th century and one which has also seen increasing numbers of practitioners and tools (Blackwell et al. 2022). One relatively new system is Konduktiva, for live coding in the JavaScript programming language (Bell et al. 2024). Considering the advantages it can provide, some practitioners have sought to use it for audio-visual performances. One the methods for generation of visual material which has become more practical in the 2020s is generative AI based on machine learning (Epstein and Hertzmann 2023). Stable Diffusion is one of those systems (Zhang et al. 2023). It is then possible to consider the combination of these two and to ask: How can live coding be integrated as a control mechanism for the generation of realtime video produced through generative AI?Research contributionIn this performance, Beyond 1&0 Opening Performance, new systems are used for both the generation of music and graphics. This research presents one technical approach to answering the research question described above. A real-time system has been programmed in Touch Designer by Giang Nguyen Hoang to use Stable Diffusion. Stable Diffusion generates images based on prompts generated by a custom algorithm written by Giang and Renick Bell in a JavaScript live coding session using Konduktiva on another device. Those prompts are sent to Touch Designer over OSC rhythmically according to the rhythms defined in the live coding system. The images are then styled and composed with the text of the prompt and other messages from the live coder in Resolume and displayed for the audience along with the live coded musical accompaniment by Bell. By developing this system, the researchers have shown one possible technical solution for the combination of the approaches presented above in the Research Background section. Such a workflow is novel, as the authors are unaware of work by others combining these technologies in this way. Through this implementation, a new latent space of possibility is identified for future work to explore, in which variations of prompt algorithms and frequency of prompting can generate a range of visual outputs, all of which depend on the particular model being prompted. These technical approaches are very new and few researchers have attempted to use them together. By presenting this approach, we have created a foundation for further research in this area. We also present this workflow as a model for others to follow and iterate on to find new or improved methods for similar purposes. Why aren’t we trusting one another? An autoethnography about third space leadership
The emergence of blended professionals in higher education who encompass roles such as academic, teaching-focused, learning design, academic development, and professional staff has led to a growing presence of third spaces where traditional boundaries between roles are blurred. These spaces require novel approaches to collaboration, leadership, and role management. This article explores the author’s self-study reflections via autoethnography as a now senior leader, looking back on their experiences as an early career third space academic at an Australian university. Employing a retrospective autoethnography, the study delves into the challenges and opportunities of managing a diverse team of third space professionals for the first time. The author’s lived experience highlights strategies for building trust, clarifying roles, and improving communication among blended professionals operating in third spaces. Key findings identify some of the critical leadership requirements needed in third spaces, including trust-building, understanding of roles, resource and time management, effective communication, and recognition of individual and collective contributions. This study provides valuable insights into navigating third space leadership and offers guidance to enhance team dynamics in these increasingly prevalent roles.</p
Virtual Reality Utilisation in History Education: Discovery Through a Systematic Quantitative Literature Review
This systematic quantitative literature review spans 2013 to 2023 and includes 40research articles that meet all eligibility criteria. It explores the intersection of virtual reality (VR) and history education, serving as a scoping of the field, discovering key contributors, publication trends, research types, geographic distribution, participant demographics, educational levels, research methods and designs, key findings, and thematic relationships among key concepts. The key findings indicate a surge in VR-related history/social studies research, with Europe leading in contributions, followed by Asia, North America, South America, Africa, and Oceania. Students were the primary research participants in the studies included in the review, with the majority of the studies empirical research. The majority of studies focused on higher education and were conducted utilising quantitative methods and experimental research design. The findings reveal that VR significantly enhances learning experiences, historical thinking skills, and positive attitudes toward VR and the history subject.</p
Role of training in changing designers’ attitudes and behaviour in optimal use of products with recycled content in the construction sector: A systematic literature review
Optimal use of products with recycled content (PwRC) has emerged as a targeted strategy to reduce construction and demolition (C&D) waste disposal and promote resource circularity in the building and construction sector. Within this context, the role of training in changing project designers’ attitudes and behaviour towards the use of PwRC is poorly investigated on a global scale. Hence, this study aims to develop a framework that shows how training can influence project designers’ attitudes and behaviour towards the optimal use of PwRC through two research questions: (a) what are the factors that influence to change the attitude and behaviour, (b) what are the existing theories and models that support the attitudes and behavioural changes, using a systematic literature review. The review found that changing attitudes and behaviour towards the optimal use of PwRC is influenced by psychological factors, although economic and sociological factors do also have an impact. Of these psychological factors, attitude, knowledge, perceived behaviour control, and subjective norms are more frequently examined. From the economic factors, economic benefits and from sociological factors, collaboration and communication are the primary considerations. The review also suggests that the theory of Planned Behaviour and the Extended Theory of Planned Behaviour are the most widely used theories in this respect. This study contributes to the knowledge development by proposing a seven-element training framework aiming to influence project designers’ attitudes and behavioural change towards the optimal use of PwRC. This is a foundation for further research on circular economy education for construction project designers.</p

The Black Legend: Postmodernity, the Latin American politique and cinema’s role in historical revisionism
The Black Legend, the ‘truth’ surrounding Spanish atrocities in Latin America, has become a central point of both Spanish and Latin American modern national identities. Much of the present academic focus revolves around re-examining the Conquest itself and the constructing of Conquest narratives after the Reformation and the 1898 war between the United States and Spain. This is particularly relevant in Hollywood and wider cinematic representations of Spanish colonialism. However, the debate remains mired in Modernist considerations of historical ‘truths’ and ‘absolutes’. In a postmodern world, however, these are no longer possible, meaning the debate must move away from a search for ‘truth’ to an examination of the political implication of the rising multiplicity of narratives.Black Legend historical revisionism is, presently, decidedly popular in the Spanish ‘national’ consciousness. However, Black Legend (cinematic) historiography within Spain only examines the methods and reasons for its own construction, thus, confining itself within modernist historiography. Postmodernity’s challenging of grand narratives and celebration of multiple voices questions the possibility of a defined, singular, Spanish national consciousness and, inevitably, forces the Black Legend’s historical revisionism towards Latin America. The United States is the modern, hegemonic metanarrative, a narrative disseminated through Hollywood and the cinematic lens. Given Latin America’s historical, geographical, and political proximity and shared Western Hemispheric experience over five centuries – Latin Americans are the shared yet contrasting narrative. Postmodern historical revisionism, therefore, resides most powerfully and politically within Latin America.</p
Cobalt Borate Complex With Tetrahedrally Coordinated Co2+- Promotes Lithium Superoxide Formation in Li-O2 Batteries
The development of non-aqueous lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries is hindered by inefficient discharge product decomposition, side reactions with the electrolyte, and high charge overpotentials (>1 V). This study explores the use of sodium cobalt borate (Na3CoB5O10, NCBO) with cobalt in tetrahedral geometry as an oxygen electrocatalyst for non-aqueous Li-O2 batteries. The prepared cobalt borate exhibits an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential of 326 mVRHE at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 42 mV dec-1 in 1 m KOH. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations identify the OH-covered (101) surface of NCBO as the preferred OER site, with an overpotential between 451 and 544 mV. In Li-O2 batteries, the NCBO cathode demonstrates 200 cycles with an overpotential of 1.95 V and 56.00% round-trip efficiency at a capacity limit of 500 mA h g-1, along with a smaller charge overpotential of 0.64 V at a capacity limit of 2000 mA h g-1. Post-cycling analysis of NCBO electrodes reveals electronically conductive Lithium Superoxide (LiO2) as the dominant discharge product. As revealed by DFT studies, the promising performance of NCBO in Li-O2 batteries is attributed to its tetrahedral Co coordination, highlighting its potential for electrocatalytic applications.</p
Long live Darth Vapour! Examining how audiences engage with influencers in an anti-vaping campaign
Social media influencers (SMIs) have become role models for younger audiences, making them important stakeholders for engaging young people with health information. Yet there is a lack of research on how young people respond to government health information delivered to them through SMIs. This study examines the response to an Australian Government public relations campaign, which used influencers to disseminate content about the harms of vaping. We conducted a content analysis on 534 comments collected from influencer-generated content and then conducted a further analysis using the uses and gratification theory (UGT). The study found that SMIs were able to translate health messages into sub-cultural codes using what the authors propose as “vernacular authentication”. This translation led to a more responsive environment for commenters to engage with the health content. The study suggests that SMIs typologies can operate at distinct socio-ecological levels. Health public relations campaigns should consider the use of influencers through a socio-ecological intervention lens instead of looking at the size of their audiences. The study also identifies the potential use of UGT as an evaluation framework for influencer-led public relations campaigns.</p
TIMELESS OBJECTS: Pause Towards Reset
Timeless Objects: Pause Toward Reset explores the aesthetics of time through a design-led inquiry, engaging with history, culture, memory, and embodied play. This practice-based PhD reflects on my creative work to investigate how design mediates our experience of time and enables us to inhabit it more consciously. Jewish conceptions of cyclical time and cultural memory provide a conceptual framework for situating this design practice. In Jewish culture, time is not solely linear but cyclical, anchored in ritual and collective memory. Shabbat, a sacred pause outside of ordinary time, serves as a model for temporal design, where memory, ethics, and reflection converge. This research proposes a temporal design framework that values tradition, symbolic systems, and cultural continuity, especially in an era of accelerated technological change. The central question guiding this research is: How can the aesthetics of everyday life, shaped by the distinctiveness of Jewish temporality and memory, transform the way we inhabit time?This reflective practice interprets temporality through creative experimentation, structured around a trivium of three conceptual threads: sacred time, embodied play, and cultural archetype. This approach positions play as a generative mode of inquiry, structuring design as a powerful mediator of time and memory. Through this lens, a temporal design system emerges, bridging past and present, and uncovering the tacit knowledge embedded in ritual, repetition, and re lective making. Ultimately, the trivium reveals how design can illuminate the sacred dimension of human experience if we learn to pause, to see, and to inhabit time attentively.</p
Rethinking journalistic autonomy in the algorithmic era: toward context-aware, value-driven, and human-centred research into journalistic AI
The history of journalism is a history of social change, technological disruption, and institutional adaptation. From early image reproduction and radio broadcasts to smartphones and generative artificial intelligence (AI), new technologies have continually reshaped journalistic storytelling, distribution, and reception. The rise of generative AI in our contemporary journalism landscape promises similarly profound changes—yet without careful reflection, this shift risks reinforcing opaque, inequitable, and unsustainable practices. In this commentary, we argue for more context-aware, value-driven, and human-centred research into journalistic autonomy in the AI era. It advocates a shift in focus from algorithmic journalism—where technological capabilities define journalistic form and practice—to journalistic AI, where technology is explicitly designed and employed to serve journalism’s democratic purposes. Drawing on literature in journalism studies and human–machine communication, and engaging with the four propositions of journalistic autonomy—relationality, boundaries, agency, and purpose—this article conceptualises autonomy as contingent and co-constructed across institutions, technologies, and people. It proposes a context-aware, value-driven, and human-centred approach to understand how autonomy is enacted, constrained, and redefined in different political, technological, and cultural contexts and a global research agenda to advance journalism as a public good amid technological transformation.</p
