Re/producing a Maternal Genealogy: from the sea to the mouth, a Radio Art Project
This project explores the production of a multilingual maternal genealogy through experimental radio production processes, and considers the conceptual and material possibilities of genealogical transmission in an intergenerational and cross-cultural context via an enquiry into the maternal line in my family. Through recording my mother, grandmother, aunts, and myself speaking to each other in three different languages – Fuqinghua (福清话), Mandarin (普通话), and English – this maternal genealogy pursues “genealogy” as not only a cultural artefact or representation of family lineage, but as a critical feminist technique of historical re/production. I have produced nine tracks in the form of an online radio art project, from the sea to the mouth, which collectively explore the poetics of mis/communication and alternate transmission models for working through fragmented oral transmission in diasporic experiences of language. Through experimental radio production and maternal genealogy production as entwined research processes, I have identified and present here multiple modes of how we reproduce intergenerational and otherworldly relationships that are unique to this constellation of relationships, which I have named our “genealogical transmission methodologies”. Some of these modes of relational re/production include: translating, mediating, mis/communicating, dream-listening, deep listening, repeating, recording, transcribing, deconstructing, reassembling, tending to embodied sounds beyond language, and storytelling. The project’s aesthetic form and production processes have been guided by these genealogical transmission methodologies rather than through adhering to established genealogical or radio forms. Drawing from a broad range of cultural feminist theorists and sound-based practitioner-scholars, from the sea to the mouth as a maternal genealogy radio artefact both depicts and enacts the re/production processes of radio, of knowledge, and of relationships between women in my family which also extend beyond the human. While the genealogical transmission methodologies outlined in this project emerge from the specific context of my family, it also demonstrates processes of genealogical re/production which can be adapted to other relational and research contexts.</p
Sourcing behavior and the role of news media in AI-powered search engines in the digital media ecosystem: Comparing political news retrieval across five languages
This study examines the role of news media in the context of generative AI-enhanced search engines, focusing on the 2024 Taiwan presidential election. Using Microsoft’s Copilot, we conducted a comparative analysis by prompting election news in five languages: English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, German, and Swedish. While Copilot uses mainly professional news media, provides quick access to synthesized information, and exhibits source transparency, it frequently creates misinformation and misattributes news sources. The analysis highlights variations in Copilot’s sourcing behavior, showing a strong reliance on English-language sources, particularly those from the UK and US, across different prompting languages. Such reliance raises concerns about the homogenization of information and the marginalization of regional perspectives. The study underscores the critical role and dilemma of news media, which, while serving as authoritative sources in democratic societies, must navigate an increasing AI-mediated information ecosystem to maintain autonomy vis-à-vis powerful technological infrastructures. By evaluating Copilot’s sourcing practices and misinformation prevalence, this research contributes to the discourse on AI’s impact on news dissemination, media diversity, and democratic processes. Specifically, we discuss the consequences of two approaches available to news media to prevent their content from being used without compensation: opting out of crawling (“platform counterbalancing”) or establishing partnerships with AI companies. Current regulatory efforts, including copyright reforms and the EU AI Act, fall short of safeguarding journalism or regulating AI. We propose policy and regulatory recommendations to improve transparency, factual correctness, accuracy in source attribution, and accountability in AI-generated content, supporting informed citizenship in the digital age.</p
Moving Oceans
Moving Oceans is a research project about the role of sport, physical activities and leisure in how we come to care for oceans and coasts. It is part of an Australian Research Council DECRA project (DE190101178). This website explores the everyday individual and community relationships we develop through surfing, swimming and other ocean lifestyle sports. These sports and activities keep our bodies and minds healthy and they play a key part in the health of oceans and coasts too. This project aims to show how and why ocean lifestyle sports help us experience such close connections with the saltwater plants, animals, geographies and climates. It uses ethnographic methods, and draws on feminist, ecofeminist and feminist posthuman theories. </p
Future matters: Rethinking material value-chains by drawing out hidden landscapes of extraction
This paper outlines a mode of landscape architecture practice that uses landscape drawing processes to prompt the rethinking of material value-chains. As the catastrophic damage reaped on Earth’s ecosystems because of human material demands becomes increasingly visible, so too does the need to change current material-use practices. The drawing methods developed in landscape architecture for seeing and working with landscape can play a key role in this change-process, as they have the potential to open new perspectives among material users and support rethinking material value-chains by highlighting the urgent need for change. This approach to landscape practice operates through workshops that lead participants through
drawing processes to establish encounters with the environmental destruction caused by hidden processes of material extraction. This work highlights a future role for landscape architects supporting regenerative material practices through cultivating awareness of our distributed landscape impacts.</p
Toward heat resilient families in northern Melbourne/Naarm: Summary Report
This report presents findings from a research project conducted by RMIT University in partnership with Merri-bek City Council and Sweltering Cities. The research discusses experiences of managing family life during summer for a small group of women in Melbourne, Victoria, and a selection of local government and community sector stakeholders on responding to the challenges of summer heat.</p
Development and validation of the Global Urban Heat Vulnerability Index (GUHVI) - supplementary materials
This data package contains supplementary materials related to development and validation of the Global Urban Heat Vulnerability Index (GUHVI) conducted for 8 Australian capital cities, and 9 diverse cities worldwide. This research was initiated by the Global Observatory of Healthy and Sustainable Cities for the 1000 Cities Challenge and inclusion in the Global Healthy & Sustainable City Indicators (GHSCI) open-source software.This data package contains the following:The Jupyter Notebook hosting a custom Python script that makes use of the Google Earth Engine API and geemap API to generate an overall heat vulnerability raster, three sub-index rasters, and ten input rasters.POPD, SHDI, and IMR input rasters. The remaining inputs into the GUHVI are automatically fetched from cloud storage as the script runs.GUHVI and iHVI visual comparison as .jpg file.A folder for each of the 8 Australian cities involved in the study, containing the 14 GUHVI rasters, urban centre boundary in .shp format, and hottest third of the year date range in .txt format in the 'GUHVI Outputs' folder. Assessing Vietnam's sustainable agritourism by integrated multi-criteria decision-making approach
Agritourism has emerged as a contemporary tourism alternative in the post-COVID-19 era, adapting to the need to connect with nature while promoting a sustainable tourism model. As nations increasingly recognize agritourism's potential, efforts to create suitable locations strategically are becoming a focal point in the tourism industry's evolution towards more sustainable and enriching experiences. The study aims to select the most appropriate destination for sustainable agritourism development in Vietnam using the integrated Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model, Best-Worst method (BWM), and spherical fuzzy Combined compromise solution (SF-CoCoSo) methods. To begin, the DEA model is employed to sift through potential locations. Subsequently, the BWM technique is utilized to establish the significance of the evaluation criteria, while the SF-CoCoSo technique determines the priority of destinations. The result shows that, among the twelve criteria, agricultural product potential (SC1) secures the top rank. After filtering out the five appropriate destinations, LamDong (DMU8) is the best location, promising prospects for promoting sustainable tourism, elevating agricultural value, and bolstering the rural economy. By combining these methodologies, the study seeks to give a thorough and accurate assessment of the sustainability of agritourism locations, enabling policymakers, managers, and investors to make informed decisions about agritourism development. These findings can apply to similar tourism types in the same context or other rural areas in decision-making. Further research on assessing criteria is required to comprehensively cover aspects of sustainable development.</p
Iffytown EP
Research Background Iffy Town EP investigates the abject, the scatological, and the corporeal through an expanded sculptural and painterly practice that confronts mortality and bodily processes. Building on art historical engagements with the grotesque—from medieval gargoyles to Mike Kelley's explorations of repressed materiality—this project mobilizes excremental imagery as a site of philosophical inquiry into life's cyclical nature. The work employs Dwyer's signature heterogeneous material vocabulary, combining traditional artistic mediums (painting, sculpture) with everyday objects transformed through processes of smearing, piping, and surface manipulation. Colour operates as both aesthetic and ecological signifier, engaging with recent scientific research demonstrating how climate change threatens biological pigmentation—from bleaching coral reefs to declining pollinator populations that diminish floral coloration, and butterflies and insects losing vibrancy as their habitats degrade. Eyes, mirrors, and light sources function as surveillant elements within installations that refuse sanitized gallery aesthetics. The exhibition's title references the "extended play" format, suggesting both musical seriality and theatrical performance, positioning the work as an ongoing episodic exploration rather than a finite statement. Research Significance This research contributes to critical discourse surrounding abjection theory, particularly Julia Kristeva's formulations of the abject as that which disturbs identity and order. By centring excremental materiality, the work challenges bourgeois notions of taste and decorum that have historically policed artistic production. The project advances feminist reclamations of bodily knowledge, positioning processes of elimination and decay as generative rather than purely destructive. The "flowering spectre" introduces memento mori traditions into contemporary practice, examining how beauty and decomposition coexist while referencing the climate crisis's threat to chromatic biodiversity. Colour itself becomes a site of mourning and urgency, acknowledging that pigmentation—whether in nature or art—exists within precarious ecological systems. The work's significance lies in its refusal of binary thinking—life/death, beautiful/repugnant, high/low—instead proposing a continuum where transformation occurs through material degradation and reconfiguration. The surveillant gaze created by eyes and mirrors implicates viewers in the work's scatological fantasy, destabilizing comfortable spectatorship. Research Contribution Iffy Town EP contributes methodologically by demonstrating how installation practice can engage visceral, taboo subject matter without resorting to shock tactics or literalism. The work expands understanding of how artists negotiate disgust as an aesthetic category and philosophical provocation. By framing the exhibition as an "extended play," Dwyer contributes to discourse on seriality, duration, and the unfinished in contemporary art—positioning artworks as iterative processes rather than completed objects. The research validates scatological content as legitimate terrain for exploring existential questions about embodiment, mortality, and material transformation. Through its heterogeneous material application, the project models how artists can maintain conceptual coherence while embracing formal multiplicity, contributing to expanded definitions of what constitutes painting and sculpture in contemporary practice.</p
The Bell Jar: everything I Googled for the first four months of my baby's life
Background: Being pregnant, giving birth, and parenting are often challenging; however, the COVID-19 pandemic introduced new anxiety and forms of isolation for pregnant people and parents. This research project used digital autoethnography to investigate and map the types of anxiety experienced by a first-time mother confined to an inner-city apartment for the first four months of her baby's life due to Victoria’s pandemic response and its second 112-day lockdown (the longest continuous lockdown worldwide). Contribution: ‘The Bell Jar: everything I Googled for the first four months of my baby's life’ is both a poem and a small sculpture. Slender canvas strips, cut up and stuffed into a bell jar, feature text in capital letters (like the news ticker or crawlers we diligently watched as the pandemic unfolded). The text records everything I Googled during the first four months of my baby's life, illustrating how the lack of direct contact with family members and mother’s groups, along with reduced hours and visits by maternal health nurses because of pandemic lockdowns, led to a reliance on digital platforms and search engines like Google. The text reflects the constant anxiety and questions that often come with new parenthood, as well as how pandemic-related worries further intensified these concerns. Significance: This work was published on the front cover of issue 96 of Street Cake—an online magazine for experimental writing.</p
Results (Objective value)
The objective function values obtained after applying Phase 1 and Phase 2(TDFM) matheuristics are given.The updated treatment days of existing patients obtained from Phase 1 are provided.The experiments were conducted using the high-performance computing resources provided by the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) in Australia. A single core with 4 GB of RAM was utilised, and the commercial Mixed-Integer Programming solver IBM CPLEX 22.1.2 was employed.</p
