    Efficiency of systemic versus intralesional bone marrow- derived stem cells in regeneration of oral mucosa after induction of formocresol induced ulcers in dogs

    Background: Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) are the key to regenerative wound healing. MSCs have spatial memory and respond to local environment. The goal of this study was to evaluate the use of systemic and intralesional transplantation of BMSCs for regeneration of oral mucosa in an in vivo dog model. Materials and Methods: Transplantation of undifferentiated green fluorescent protein (GFP)-labeled autologous BMSCs systemically, submucosally or vehicle (saline) was injected around the chemically induced oral ulcer in each group of 18 adult dogs. The healing process of the ulcer was monitored clinically and histopathologically. Gene expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and collagen genes was detected in biopsies from all ulcers. One way ANOVA was used to compare between means of the three groups. Results were considered significant at P < 0.05. Results: Flow cytometric analysis of the MSCs at the passage 3 showed that these cells were negative for CD45 (2.39%). They expressed high levels of CD29 (98.34%). Frozen fluorescence microscopy of sections of the cell-treated oral tissue of all groups indicated that the GFP-transduced implanted cells were integrated within the transplanted tissues. The treatment resulted in dramatic wound edge activation and resurfacing of oral mucosa wound. Conclusion: Our results revealed that BMSCs may be labeled with (GFP), in order to know the distribution of these cells after administration, and suggest that intralesional administration is an appropriate procedure to achieve acceptable regeneration of the previously injured oral mucosa more than systemic route

    Technical, Economical, and Environmental Evaluation for Sizing and Siting of Distributed Generation in Electric Power Networks

    The implementation of Distributed Generation (DG) in distribution networks has spread all over the world at the present time. The proper DG sizing and siting is essential for various technical, economical, and environmental aspects. Each one of these three aspects can be considered as an objective for optimizing the DG sizing and siting problem. This thesis proposes an optimal solution for DG sizing and siting for distribution system expansion planning; taking into consideration the above mentioned aspects. A literature review for the work done on DG sizing and siting in distribution networks is presented. A mathematical model is formulated to optimize DG unit ratings and locations. The cost function optimizes the cost of DG, substation expansion, or both. It also includes requirements of environmental demands expressed in economic terms. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique has been applied to solve the above mentioned distribution expansion planning problem. The proposed model and PSO are evaluated using three case studies. The first case study has been taken from one of the main references and the obtained results are compared to the previous results to verify the proposed method. The second case study is a practical system from the National Egyptian Power Network. Finally the third case study is the standard IEEE 30 bus system (distribution voltage level). All three case studies have shown favorable results. Simulation results for the small distribution systems with limited number of bus-bars indicate that both addition of substation transformers and localized DG units are required. However, in large distribution systems with large number of bus-bars, different solutions including many DG units, connected to different bus-bars can be obtained.     Computer-aided detection/diagnosis (CAD) systems can enhance the diagnostic capabilities of physicians and reduce the time required for accurate diagnosis. The objective of this paper is to review the recent published segmentation and classification techniques and their state-of-the-art for the human brain magnetic resonance images (MRI). The review reveals the CAD systems of human brain MRI images are still an open problem. In the light of this review we proposed a hybrid intelligent machine learning technique for computer-aided detection system for automatic detection of brain tumor through magnetic resonance images. The proposed technique is based on the following computational methods; the feedback pulse-coupled neural network for image segmentation, the discrete wavelet transform for features extraction, the principal component analysis for reducing the dimensionality of the wavelet coefficients, and the feed forward back-propagation neural network to classify inputs into normal or abnormal. The experiments were carried out on 101 images consisting of 14 normal and 87 abnormal (malignant and benign tumors) from a real human brain MRI dataset. The classification accuracy on both training and test images is 99% which was significantly good. Moreover, the proposed technique demon- strates its effectiveness compared with the other machine learning recently published techniques. The results revealed that the proposed hybrid approach is accurate and fast and robust. Finally, possible future directions are suggested
