    Diagnostic Evaluation of Urinary Angiogenin (ANG)and Clusterin (CLU) as Biomarker for Bladder Cancer

    Bladder carcinoma is an important worldwide health problem. Both cystoscopy and urine cytology used in detecting bladder cancer suffer from drawbacks where cystos- copy is an invasive method and urine cytology shows low sensitivity in low grade tumors. This study validates easier and less time-consuming techniques to evaluate the value of com- bined use of angiogenin and clusterin in comparison and combination with voided urine cytology in the detection of bladder cancer patients. This study includes malignant (blad- der cancer patients, n=50), benign (n=20) and healthy (n=20) groups. The studied groups were subjected to cystoscopic examination, detection of bilharzial antibodies, urine cytolo- gy, and estimation of urinary angiogenin and clusterin by ELISA. The overall sensitivity and specificity were 66 and 75 % for angiogenin, 70 and 82.5 % for clusterin and 46 and 80 % for voided urine cytology. Combined sensitivity of voided urine cytology with the two studied biomarkers was 88 % which is higher than the combined sensitivity of both markers alone (82 %) and that of the cytology with each marker (76 and 80 %) for angiogenin and clusterin respective- ly. In conclusion, combined use of the cytology with the studied biomarkers can improve the sensitivity for detecting bladder cancer, and may be very useful in monitoring the effectiveness of antiangiogenic and apoptotic therapies in bladder cancer

    Physics-Based Spectral Sharpening Through Filter-Chart Calibration

    The spectral overlap of color-sampling filters increases errors when using a diagonal matrix transform, for color correction and reduces color distinction. Spec- tral sharpening is a transformation of colors that was introduced to reduce color-constancy errors when the colors are collected through spectrally overlapping fil- ters. The earlier color-constancy methods improved color precision when the illuminant color is changed, but they overlooked the color distinction. In this article, we intro- duce a new spectral sharpening technique that has a good compromise of color precision and distinction, based on real physical constraints. The spectral overlap is measured through observing a gray reference chart with a set of real and spectrally disjoint filters selected by the user. The new sharpening method enables to sharpen colors obtained by a sensor without knowing the camera response functions. Experiments with real images showed that the colors sharpened by the new method have good levels of color precision and distinction as well. The color-constancy performance is compared with the data-based sharpening method in terms of both preci- sion and distinction.

    Radiographic Assessment of Different Attachment System in Kennedy Class I Lower Partially Edentulous Ridges With Anterior Modification Space

    Aim: This research was carried out to evaluate different attachment systems in cases of distal extension partial denture with anterior modification area regarding the crestal bone level changes of the principal abutments.Materials & Methods: Twenty patients exhibiting Kennedy Class 1 lower edentulous ridges with anterior modification space with bilateral canines, and first or second premolars the standing abutments were selected. Patients were divided into 2 equal groups. Group one, partial denture retained by anterior splint bar with short distal cantilever extension was constructed, while for group two partial denture retained by extracoronal resilient attachments was constructed. Follow up visits were scheduled at time of denture insertion, six, twelve and eighteen months after denture insertion. Crestal bone level changes were assessed using intra-oral radiographs taken with the standardized long cone paralleling technique. Results: This study showed that there was a statistically significant increase in crestal bone height loss around the principal abutments in both groups. For both groups, statistically significant difference was found comparing the amount of marginal bone loss at the anterior abutments, where group 1 showed less bone resorption from insertion to 18 months in comparison to group 2. Conclusion: Anterior splint bar with short distal cantilever should be considered as a treatment option in cases exhibiting Kennedy class 1 edentulous ridges with anterior modification space
