    Utilization of Crude Glycerol as a Substrate for the Production of Rhamnolipid by Pseudomonas aeruginosa

    Biosurfactants are produced by bacteria or yeast utilizing different substrates as sugars, glycerol, or oils. They have important applications in the detergent, oil, and pharmaceutical industries. Glycerol is the product of biodiesel industry and the existing glycerol market cannot accommodate the excess amounts generated; consequently, new markets for refined glycerol need to be developed. The aim of present work is to optimize the production of microbial rhamnolipid using waste glycerol. We have developed a process for the production of rhamnolipid biosurfactants using glycerol as the sole carbon source by a local Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolate that was obtained from an extensive screening program. A factorial design was applied with the goal of optimizing the rhamnolipid production. The highest production yield was obtained after 2 days when cells were grown in minimal salt media at pH 6, containing 1% (v/v) glycerol and 2% (w/v) sodium nitrate as nitrogen source, at 37°C and at 180 rpm, and reached 2.164 g/L after 54 hours (0.04 g/L h). Analysis of the produced rhamnolipids by TLC, HPLC, and FTIR confirmed the nature of the biosurfactant as monorhamnolipid. Glycerol can serve as a source for the production of rhamnolipid from microbial isolates providing a cheap and reliable substrate

    The production of Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a relatively new technology. Nowadays, the production of SCC is becoming more popular in all over the world due to its superior properties. Self-compacting concrete is a fluid mixture suitable for placing in structures with congested reinforcement without vibration. Self-compacting concrete development must ensure a good balance between deformability and stability. Also, compactibility is affected by the characteristics of materials and the mix proportions, it becomes necessary to evolve a procedure for mix design of SCC. The paper presents an experimental procedure for the design of self-compacting concrete mixes with different water/binder ratio and the effect of mineral admixtures –fly ash or silica fume- on fresh and hardened properties of SCC. The test results for acceptance characteristics of self-compacting concrete such as slump flow, J-ring and V-funnel are presented. Further, compressive strength at 7 and 28 days was also determined and results are analyzed and discussed

    Comparative Study of Multivariate and Univariate Determination of Zolmitriptan in the Presence of its Degradation products

    This work describes comparative study of multivariate chemometric and univariate spectrophotometric determination of zolmitriptan (ZLM ) in the presence of its alkaline and oxidative degradation products. Both methods show high sensitivity and the same linearity range (1-6 μg/mL) while the chemometric method has the advantage of higher accuracy, higher specificity and better regression parameters. The study describes complete stability study on zolmitriptan and structure elucidation of the formed degradation products. The spectrophotometric method based on successive spectrophotometric resolution pattern namely; successive ratio subtraction (SRS) method using both degradation products as divisors successively followed by direct spectrophometric measurement of zolmitriptan at 222 nm while the chemometric method used PLS and PCR models. The proposed methods were successfully applied for the determination of zolmitriptan in pure powder as well as in its pharmaceutical formulation. Statistical comparison showed no significant difference between the developed methods and the reference method

    Objective: To study the effect of two remineralizing agents on the microhardness and ultramorphology of deminaralized enamel. Methods: Human maxillary anterior teeth were demineralized by phosphoric acid. Specimens were divided into two groups (G) according to the remineralizing agent tested: G1: Whitesmile mousse, G2: Clinpro™ White Varnish. The remineralizing agents were applied for three minutes per day for seven consecutive days. Microhardness and ultramorphological evaluation was tested for untreated enamel (control), demineralized enamel and remineralized enamel. Results: One-way ANOVA revealed statistical significant decrease on mean microhardness values after specimens' demineralization comparing to the control group. There was a significant increase on mean microhardness after the application of the remineralizing agents (p≤0.05) compared to the demineralized specimens. There was an insignificant difference between mean microhardness for specimens treated with Whitesmile mousse and Clinpro™ White Varnish at p≥0.05. SEM microphotographs of untreated enamel surface showed normal smooth enamel, while demineralized enamel showed a honeycomb like structure. Specimens treated with the remineralizing agents showed homogenous deposits filling the interprismatic spaces. Conclusion: Both remineralizing agents provided similar profit. However, Clinpro™ White varnish could be beneficial for patients who want to keep awayfrom using fluoride or for children at danger of developing fluorosis
