Hormones / Anthony W. Norman, Helen L. Henry.

    No full text
Previous edition by Anthony W. Norman and Gerald Litwack. 1997.Includes bibliographical references and index.xv, 413 pages :The 3rd edition of Hormones offers a comprehensive treatment of the hormones of humans all viewed from the context of current theories of their action in the framework of our current understanding their physiological actions as well as their molecular structures, and those of their receptors. This new edition of Hormones is intended to be used by advanced undergraduates and graduate students in the biological sciences. It will also provide useful background information for first year medical students as they engage in studies which are increasingly problem-based rather than discipline-focused. As the field of endocrinology itself has expanded so much in the past two decades, the up to date presentation of the basics presented in this book will be a solid foundation on which more specialized considerations can be based. New to this Edition: Hormones, 3rd Edition is organized with two introductory chapters followed by 15 chapters on selected topics of the molecular biology of the major endocrine systems operative in humans. Coverage, for the first time of the following hormones; ghrelin, oxyntomodulin, kisspeptin, adrenomedullin, FGF23, erythropoietin, VIP and extended coverage of NO. Coverage of the hypothalamus has been integrated with the anterior pituitary because of the intimate functional and relationship between the two. Consideration of the role of hormones in cancer has been integrated into the chapters on the relevant hormones. Each of these areas occupies a unique niche in our understanding of the biological world and is part of the universality of signaling systems and how they govern biological systems

A Comparative study of smart spectrophotometric methods for simultaneous determination of sitagliptin phosphate and metformin hydrochloride in their bi- nary mixture

    No full text
Simple, specific, accurate and precise spectrophotometric methods were developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of the oral antidiabetic drugs; sitagliptin phosphate (STG) and metformin hydrochloride (MET) in combined pharmaceutical formulations. Three methods were manipulating ratio spectra namely; ratio difference (RD), ratio subtraction (RS) and a novel approach of induced amplitude modulation (IAM) methods. The first two methods were used for determination of STG, while MET was directly determined by measuring its absorbance at λmax 232 nm. However, (IAM) was used for the simultaneous determination of both drugs. Moreover, another three methods were developed based on derivative spectroscopy followed by mathematical manipulation steps namely; amplitude factor (P-Factor), amplitude subtraction (AS) and modified amplitude subtraction (MAS). In addition, in this work the novel sample enrichment technique named spectrum addition was adopted. The proposed spectrophotometric methods did not require any preliminary separation step. The accuracy, precision and linearity ranges of the proposed methods were determined. The selectivity of the developed methods was investigated by analyzing laboratory prepared mixtures of the drugs and their combined pharmaceutical formulations. Standard deviation values were less than 1.5 in the assay of raw materials and tablets. The obtained results were statistically compared to that of a reported .spectrophotometric method. The statistical comparison showed that there was no significant difference between the proposed methods and the reported one regarding both accuracy and precision

THE INFLUENCE OF BITING FORCE ON THE STRAIN INDUCED WITHIN POSTERIOR ZIRCONIA THREE-UNIT FPD FABRICATED WITH TWO DIFFERENT VENEERING TECHNIQUES

    No full text
Purpose: This study investigated the influence of biting force on the strain induced within posterior zirconia three-unit FPD fabricated with two different veneering techniques. Materials and Methods: Twenty 3-unit all ceramic zirconia bridges replacing missing upper second premolar were constructed and divided according to their veneering technique into two groups (n = 10/group). Group 1: Translucent Zirconia fabricated by fully anatomical technique (n=10), Group 2: Zirconia framework veneered by condensing and sintering VM9 low-fusing veneering porcelain by layering technique (n=10). The restorations were cemented on epoxy resin dies using dual cure adhesive resin Cement. Four KYOWA strain gauges (KYOWA, Tokyo, Japan) of 1 mm length were bonded, (1) at the cervical third (mesial margin) of the mesial wall of the 1st premolar retainer, (2) gingival surface of the Pontic, (3) buccal wall of the Pontic (below buccal cusp tip) and (4) at the cervical third of the distal surface of the 1st molar retainer using strain gauge cement (KYOWA, Tokyo, Japan). The samples were subjected to vertical loading (800 N) using universal testing machine

Corporate Social Responsibility: Rewriting the Relationship between Business and Society

    No full text
The relationship between business and society has witnessed a dramatic change in the past few years. Globalization, ethical consumerism, environmental concerns, strict government regulations, and growing strength of the civil society, are all factors that forced businesses to reconsider their role in society; accordingly there has been a surge of notions that tries to explain this new complex relation between business and society. This paper aims at accentuating this evolving relation by focusing on the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR). It differentiates between CSR and other related concepts such as business ethics and corporate philanthropy. It analyzes the different arguments in the CSR debate, pinpoints mechanisms adopted by businesses in carrying out their social responsibilities, and concludes with the link between corporate social responsibility and sustainable development

Using Davi-Ellen Chabner's proven learning method, Medical Terminology: A Short Course, 7th Edition omits time-consuming, nonessential information and helps you build a working medical vocabulary of the most frequently encountered prefixes, suffixes, and word roots. Medical terms are introduced in the context of human anatomy and physiology to help you understand exactly what they mean, and case studies, vignettes, and activities demonstrate how they're used in practice. With all this plus medical animations, word games, and flash cards on the Evolve companion website, you'll be amazed at how easily medical terminology becomes part of your vocabulary
